There's not a better all around shortstop in the NL. Granted the competition isn't that tough. Vizquel has got to make it. He should even start.

Furcal and Rollins haven't done anything to warrant an All-Star appearance this year. Vizquel's got Renteria beat in EqA but trails in VORP. Hanley Ramirez leads all NL shortstops in both categories.

Personally, I care more about the players last few years. Sure, Furcal and Rollins haven't been great, but they sure were last year.

Got to be Omar

Rollins 248/313/311 Fpct = 988
Furcal 259/341/329 Fpct = 950 (worst among MLB SS)
Renteria 323/404/469 Fpct = 961
Vizquel 312/412/441 Fpct = 995 (best among MLB SS)

It's got to be Omar. If he can't make the play then it just can't be made.

I think using Fpct to evaluate....

the ss position proves extremely problematic. More than any other postion IMO, ss depends primarily on the ability to rapidly react and move laterally and secondarily on his hands. Fpct only measures the latter. Mike Matheny would probably have a great fpct at short but be terrible at the position.

True. I only included Fpct because Omar had the highest. I'm biased, but Omar is defensively the best shortstop I've ever watched. Maybe it's showmanship like Kent says.

RP: Accardo? (If he starts tearing it up)
SS: Vizquel (although most likely Eckstein seems to be the voted person in)
LF: Bonds (for his name only)
RF: Alou (if he really starts tearing it up if he gets back)
