Benitez Numbers
I decided to take a look at some stats to make sure my impression of Benitez's sucking isn't something I just imagined.  After all, if he's as bad as I think he is, there's no way any manager would ever put him in a close game.  Here are some numbers I think Felipe should look at.

Last 12 appearances (IP - H - BB):

Not that he had 1 (only one!) outing in which he didn't allow a baserunner.  Maybe I'm old-fashioned or something, but when I think of a closer, I think of someone who consistently comes in and gets a 1-2-3 inning and sends the fans home happy.

The only rational reason I could come up with to keep trotting Blownitez out there...

Giants "brain" trust: "You know and I know that Blownitez is washed up and we're stuck with his big contract. But if we keep running him out there, we might get lucky and he'll string together 4 or 5 saves in a row. He's 4-0 with a good ERA. Someone might bite at the trade deadline and he'd be off our hands."

If that was the goal, I'm OK with it. But now that he's blown 4 of 10, he's pretty much poison and the ruse is up. I can't imagine, at his salary, there are many GMs who would be fooled by his bogus ERA. And the last thing you want a closer to have is a lot of wins.

Looks like the Giants are stuck with this guy. Might as well cut their losses, relegate him to mop-up duty and find out if anyone else can do the job. We already know Mando can't.

I wish they could be more like the Mexican soccer announcers.  You can't even understand what the hell they're saying, but they're so damn into it, they're still interesting.  Yesterday I saw someone score a goal and the announcer (after the standard 10 minute "GOOOOAAAAAALLLLL") just kept on screaming "VIVA!!!"  "VIVA!!!!!!"  VIIIIIVVVVAAAAA!!!!!!!" over and over again.  I'd like Brenneman to be more like that...

Brenneman turns everything into drama, but his annoncing is anything but dramatic...

No doubt about it. But that's what happens when you haven't shown any control. You never get the benefit of the doubt. That's also what happens to crap pitchers with lifetime ERAs over 5.00. Umpires expect them to miss.

We already got more out of Wright this year than we expected. If he has a few more good starts the rest of the way, it's gravy. My guess is he gets one more start. If he doesn't "wright" the ship, Hennessey's back in.

Can some1 tell me why the hell we signed Greene in the offseason? Besides the whole veteran savvy thing. Yet another example of Brian Sabean wasting money on guys who've proven they suck rather than see if their cheap youngs guys can become players who don't suck. Nice to see VizII slow down right before the bag so he's thrown out by half-a-step. That's one of those little veteran tricks you pick up after 17 years in The Show.

Why not leave Sanchez in to bunt? He's given up one hit in 8 innings this year.

Might be worthwhile to give up an out to have a chance at a shutdown inning in the 7th. Especially when the alternative is Flippy Jr hitting into a GIDP.

How many wins a year do you think Felipe costs the Giants?

Moises is worth perhaps 6 wins a year above replacement to the Giants. Suppose you got rid of Felipe, you'd most likely lose Moises. Would it be worth it?

I think so.  Felipe has had some questionable moves throughout the years, but this year he's been baffling like never before.  Moises is valuable, but just too injury prone.  I think you replace him with a solid, consistant power hitter (Phil Nevin style), and ditch the senile moron, you'd come out ahead.

I think Felipe has cost us 6 wins in the last few weeks.  So yes, it would be worth getting rid of him.

Even if we ended up with a bad manager, I doubt he could be nearly as frustrating to watch as Felipe has been.

Flippy is wretched, no argument there. But he also has a terrible roster.

You've got a uni-dimensional LH PH starting at first in Sweeney. A washed-up VizII as your only backup IF. A way-past-expire-date Finley hitting 3rd or 6th. A double-A backup catcher. A no-better-than-AAA backup outfielder in Ellison. An injury-prone, no-talent starting IB in Niekro. An injury-prone, glue-factory reject starting 2B in Durham. Two 40+ OF'ers with bad wheels in Alou and Bonds.

Even with a good manager, the Giants have nothing to put out there. I'm amazed they're still hovering around the .500 mark.

Then a 40+ LH'er with two prosthetic limbs strokes a double to the CF wall.

Sweeney is a fat tub of crap who should only be used  as a PH against RH'ers---as he has effectively been used for almost all of his career. He's becoming this year's version of Herges: taking a useful guy, putting into a situation where he can't succeed, sucking the confidence out of him, leaving him a puddle of useless goo.

Becoming pretty clear that last year was no aberration for Finley. For a guy with 270 career HRs, his power has fallen off a cliff. Hit 12 last year in 406 AB. Only 4 in 220 AB this year. He hit 36 in 2004 in 620 AB.

Looks like he hit the wall at age 40, as many do. Maybe he stopped juicing.

Still a decent fielder. But sad to see him flail away at the plate. Has no business playing as much as he is. Imagine the Giants know it.

Fox announcers say Finley was joking around before the game about how streaky he is: "I'm consistently inconsistent."

I'd say he's consistently consistent. He's now a .240 hitter with no power who plays good defense. He's JT Snow.

My point is, I've seen quite a fair share of guys score from second on plays just like that. A lot with more speed that Jason, some with the same or even less, but they score because of aggressive and smart running. He's not that fast, nor is he smart at running the bases. And when you get a chance so very rarely to play you should be more aware and smartly aggressive than he has been. I don't completely blame him though, he is after all a Giants positional prospect, and that's automatically a huge handicap.

You got that right. Blownitez is going to have to raise his game a notch or two to beat that.

Maybe the A's will reactivate Dave Kingman with the bases loaded in the 9th tomorrow down 3 runs. Then Blownitez will come in, get Kingman down 0-2, and then groove one that Kingman hits into the giant Mitt in left field.

That's my scenario.

Wed. 6/28, 7:15 pm vs. Texas Butt-rangers.  Goes without saying that the section is 311; these are Box seats, so they're below the walkway; 2nd row, right on home plate. Great seats. Closer to home plate than all but about 5% of seats in the park, so you can be generously helpful to the umpire.

Apparently, I can relay the tickets by email through the Giants website (though you might have to pay them $2/ticket to retrieve; I'm not sure how it works, but I know it does work).  I would also be happy to leave them at Will Call but would need a name to give them that would match an ID.  Let me know! I would love for you to have them!  If not, I would love for the guy right below to have them.
