Weaver?

DREAMING OF WEAVER? The Giants have spoken with the Angels about Jeff Weaver, who struck out seven while allowing two runs over six innings. The interest in Weaver could be a sign that the Giants are open to trading one of their other pitchers for a bat.

"The stuff is not the same as it was in Detroit, but he can still pitch," said Alou, who was asked strictly about Weaver's performance.

The only thing I can think of is that Sabean might deal a current SP for a 1B. Lowry in a package for Dunn?!, I'd do it.

Re: Weaver?
No way. He's inconsistent and has been overworked thanks to his days with the Dodgers. Everything about him sets off red warning lights to me.

Re: Weaver?
Weaver is overrated and overpaid. If it's his younger brother, that might be a different story...

Weaver
at least might come cheap... I don't think he represents an improvement over our inhouse options though.

So...
So...I invision a package involving Jonathon Sanchez, Noah Lowry, Brian WIlson (who if traded will turn into Joe Nathan) and a player to be named later (who if traded will turn into Francisco Liriano) for Jeff Weaver...mhmmm mhmmm. yep...

...has anyone seen my gun?

Re: Weaver?
I can't stand Weaver.  I always think about him and Tucker going at it when he was a dodger and I can't stand him.  Weaver, to me, is one those dodgers who will always be a dodger, he makes me sick.  The thought of him as a Giant makes me sicker!  Now, a package including Lowry for Adam Dunn......I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Re: Weaver?
getting weaver would be the dumbest thing to do right now, and knowing us we'd give up an arm and a leg for him

Re: Weaver?
Seriously, if we could get Dunn for Lowry (which would be great, isn't this how hardcore rumors get started - someone leak it to the press) why would we need to make another deal for SP.  Just move Hennessey into the rotation.  Not the best solution, but probably better than any trade we would be able to swing and i would really rather have Hennessey than Weaver.

Re: Weaver?
I really don't think that the Reds are going to be willing to deal Dunn right now considering they are in a good spot in that division and think they can win it. They do need pitching but if you were a gm would you want a struggling pitcher like Lowry in that kind of a hitter's park. If I were a gm I would hold out for something better. I think if we want Dunn we are going to have to offer Sanchez or Wilson + Lowry.

Re: Weaver?
I'd do that.

The Giants are going to have a serious power outage next year without Bonds and Alou.

Re: Weaver?
Not likely, but it's possible that Sabean has gotten some incredible offers for Schmidt, and is kicking the tires on bringing in Weaver for cheap to replace his veteran presence.

Re: Weaver?
What kind of veteran presence does Weaver posess? Just because he is a vet doesn't mean he has veteran presence. Maybe we are thinking about different Jeff Weavers but the Weaver I know is the foul attitude, Spicoli looking, meltdown on the mound Weaver. Has he matured that much since he signed with LAofA?

It wasn't serious
But the point was, that Sabean has always preferred a player with a "track-record" (no matter good or bad).

If he were to surprise with a Schmidt trade, he would almost assuredly want to have another "veteran" in the rotation.

Re: Weaver?
Yes but wouldn't he have the presence of mind to pick up a veteran pitcher that had a "track-record" that didn't include giving up runs like they were going out of style and melting down at the first hint that things are going wrong? I understand your point but signing Weaver to replace Schmidt would be like subtraction by addition.

Re: Weaver?
I am not trying to beat a dead hooker here and I do get that this isn't serious but picking up castoffs like Weaver is what bad teams do to keep from purging their entire AAA roster. We are not that bad... are we?

Re: Weaver?
We aren't that bad but our front office has a passion for the business of picking up old guys. I think is what they're all saying above. It would be a bad idea, but it would be in character.

Re: Weaver?
Weaver has no clue how to win, period.  Way too many times I have seen him throwing a temper tantrum in the dugout after any number of things could have happened in a game.  He is, in the purest sense of the phrase, a whiney little bitch.

I also see no point in trading for another starter if they are going to trade one, because Hennessey is being absolutely wasted right now in the bullpen.  Something changed in him over the winter and I hate that he isn't consistantly pitching.  He has been stellar when he has pitched, and is just waiting for the chance to be in the rotation.  I'd take Hennessey over Weaver at any point in Weaver's career.

Re: Weaver?
Hennessey has been stellar when he has pitched????  For every good game he pitched last year, he had a horrible start.  But I agree that I would rather have Hennessey in there rather than Weaver.

Re: Weaver?
I think the problem that the Giants have with Hennessey is that he doesn't strike anybody out. This however makes no sense to me. Regardless of his K numbers he gets people out. He got people out last year. Ks are good but you can't keep a guy that knows how to pitch out of a rotation because he doesn't strike people out.

Re: Weaver?
Hennessy's K/BB ratio is 16/18. In order have success with those kind of numbers, you generally have to be an extreme groundball pitcher, or just very lucky. I believe Hennessy's GO/FO ratio is right around 1.00, which means he's been pretty damn lucky so far.

Getting some value out him through trade while his era is in the 2's would be a good thing.

Re: Weaver?
Deal Hennessey if he isn't being used. I agree with mxmob trade him while he has value. maybe we could package him with Lowry so we wouldn't have to give up Sanchez, Valdez, or Wilson. At this point I think those guys have more up side than Hennessey.

Re: Weaver?
where is Valdez in this picture? I know he has been having trouble in Fresno. Are the Giants giving up on him this year? It seemed like Alou was so high on him in spring training and everybody was saying his stuff was electric. Maybe moving him into the bullpen was a mistake.

Re: Weaver?
Weaver would be a comedown from anyone in the rotation except for Wright and, personally, I would prefer Wright over Weaver.

Take a look at Weaver's stats.  Then take a look at Tomko's stats.  I'll bet you could scrabble them all up and they will still look the same.  Weaver is just Tomko with with double the salary and hype/reputation but with the same stats.

The only way I would take Jeff Weaver is if the Angels threw in one of the highly rated middle infielders, like Howie Kendrick or Brandon Wood (highly unlikely, Ponson would sooner go on a diet or walk past the next judge without taking a swing at him).

Jered Weaver would be another story except who would they accept in return that would be equal value?

The more likely scenario I see is there is something more wrong with Lowry than it currently seems, funny how the news about his reduced velocity came out right when the Weaver rumor came out.  The Giants would take Weaver and pay for some (half?) of his remaining salary for a minor prospect (Buscher, Bowker, Threets), then place Lowry on the DL and replace him with Weaver.

No one will give up a great young hitter for Lowry when his velocity is mysteriously down, the release of that info kills any trade value for him.

Re: Weaver?
I think Hennessey's success this year might be because he is coming out of the bull pen.  ie, he knows he is in for just a few hitters and better turn it on right now.  Last year, when starting, I think he had the idea he had to save himself to go 6, 7 innings - the consequence was he was often lit up in the first inning.
So, I'm not sure he has a future as a starter.  He may have some trade value, but he just doesn't have enough major league experience/reputation to get anything in return.
