OT - Open Music Thread
It's been a while since we did one of these. But, I just got a few new albums and felt like talking about them
1.) Red Hot Chili Pepppers - Stadium Arcadium [2 Discs]
Well, I still like the Red Hots, but this album is very much like their recent stuff and a testament to ProTools. Still, I like it.
Recommendation: Buy, if you are a RHCP fan.
2.) Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
Their best album in a while, with far less bizarre tracks that some of their albums have. There is a lot of political rants in the album, so some folks might be turned off by it. But the rants are fewer and easier to ignore than the ones in "Living with War"
Recommendation: Buy.
3.) Neil Young - Living With War
Very, very good. The first track "After the Garden" is my favorite as it reminds me of some of my Neil Young favorites. There is a lot of political rants in the album, so some folks might be turned off by it.
Recommendation: Buy, if you are a Neil Young fan. I am not sure if it is still live, but you could listen to the whole album on his website.
4.) The Little Willies - The Little Willies
A MCC reader recommended this [and played on it?] and I have to thank him for it. Named for in honor of Willie Nelson, they play a few of his songs [but nothing most folks recognize] as well as Kris Kristofferson's and some originals. Norah Jones provides vocals, as well a some other guy whose name I have really enjoyed it a lot, especially track 5 "Best of all Possible Worlds" and track 8 "Gotta Get Drunk." It is country music, but with a very different feel than modern county music. Detest Toby Keith? So do I, and this album sounds nothing like him. Or Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, or Garth Brooks.
Recommendation: BUY, BUY, BUY. Unless you have an irrational dislike of all country music. Then you suck and are beyond help.
A couple iPod related questions:
1.) Has anybody had a good experience with Radio Adapters?
2.) Is there a way to get AM radio on the iPod like you can FM radio?
Thoughts? New stuff you have bought?

Re: OT - Open Music Thread
Brazilian-born, London-living guitarist making eclectic folktronica. Guests include freakfolker Devendra Banhart and Seu Jorge, the guy who played the Bowie covers in Portuguese in The Life Aquatic. This was a grower, took about 3 months and now I can't stop listening to it.
+various artists = DFA Remixes Chapter One
NYC production duo who fetishize live instrumentation0 (bass/drums) as much as their vintage sequencers and 808s turn Le Tigre, JSBX, Gorillaz and other upside-down/inside-out. Not just dance music for indie-rockers, pretty nice party/driving compilation.

"Diamonds and Guns" by The Transplants
This is also known as the "woo hoo" song from the Garnier Fructose shampoo commercials, but don't let that fool you; the song is way cool, even if it is three years (I think) old.
Ooo, I like these threads
I really enjoy this album (far more than their earlier work, in fact);however, there is a lot of political rants in the album, so some folks might be turned off by it.
NoFX- "Wolves in Wolves' Clothing"
Not the best effort from this incredible band, but even a middling NoFX album rocks.
PS
Can't resist
--"Show Your Bones," Yeah Yeah Yeahs
--"Whatever People Say I am ...," Arctic Monkeys
--"Broken Boy Soliders," The Raconteurs
Re: OT - Open Music Thread
New album: Descended Like Vultures. Song: Bird on a Wire.
Re: OT - Open Music Thread
"Heartbeats" by Jose Gonzalez (aka the song in the fantastic Sony Bravia commercial that was filmed in SF)
"One Man Guy" by Rufus Wainwright
"Muhammad Ali (And Me)" by Cory Branan
"Auf Achse" and "The Dark of the Matinee" by Franz Ferdinand
YOUTUBE - "As My Guitar Gently Weeps" performed by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, with ridiculously jaw-dropping guitar work by Prince.
"There'll Always Be Next Year" by The Heckler (a song about the Cubs, available for free download)
SELF-PROMOTION ALERT
"Lovers" by 29 Sunset (yes, that's my "band", and the song's available for free download on our MySpace site through that link)

Re: OT - Open Music Thread
--I saw Guns N' Roses there in the early 90's. And, not to make you too jealous, but Skid Row opened for them (yes, THE Skid Row).
--A couple years later, I had tickets to see the Dead there, but they had to cancel when Jerry got sick (he died just a few months later if I'm not mistaken).
--Also, I actually helped build the place (okay, I just cleared away trash and brush on the space where they later built it) for public service as part of my agreement with the City of Palo Alto stemming from an incident with a BB gun (the details of which I choose to not reveal)

-Muse, "Plug In Baby" and "Stockholm Syndrome" are two good introductory songs
-Luther Wright and the Wrongs, "Rebuild the Wall" -- bluegrassish covers of The Wall.
-That "She's a goddamn m-fing Dodgers fan" song by ... who is that by ... damn I just can't think of it. 30 Stockton?
is it a complete
PS the dodger fan song shakes the casbah vehemently.

Also, Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" is an amazingly catchy pop song.
And, if not for the restraining order, I'd post a 10-paragraph diary about the greatness of Miss Neko Case.

I'm pumped. their single "Louisiana" is terrific, unlike anything I've heard from them. Haven't gotten around to picking up the new album (A Hundred Miles Off) but I'm sure it's a good spin

Re: OT - Open Music Thread
I once had excellent taste in music - I was the first kid on the block to both R.E.M. and Pearl Jam - but now I aim for hooky singer-songwriter pop. So, my recommendation is...
Jack's Mannequin - Everything in Transit
It's a mix of Ben Folds, Joe Jackson, and Brian Wilson. A lovely little trifle for those who have a soft spot for piano pop. Exactly what the world was anticipating when it clamored for the all-star pairing of Something Corporate frontman Andrew McMahon and rock god Tommy Lee!

Re: OT - Open Music Thread
A friend at work turned me on to them. I bought Tone Soul Evolution and fell in love, literally, I was on a high for a couple of weeks before the buzz went away, and I have bought every album since. While none ever matched that first album for me, I have enjoyed greatly each subsequent album. They are part of the Elephant 8 collective who help each other out and mix and match people into new bands, most with a focus on pop music.
I also really love Garbage and get their albums when it first comes out (I wait for most to go on deep sale before getting, it's the way my mom taught me, depression era, WPA, and all, so I have to really like them to do this).
More recent turn-ons is Keane's Hopes and Fears, the first album that from start to finish really had songs that matched the title and it's great music too.
My latest album purchase was High School Musical. It was a nice movie and great songs, though I still cannot believe that the album set all sorts of records for dominating the Billboard Top 100, shows that Disney knows how to manipulate the charts I guess, the songs are good but not that good.
My last concert was Paul McCartney, it was nice taking my kids to see him, they were all so excited (they are both Beatles fans, probably because I listen to them so much).
About the iPod, I was able to find a station that I could listen to it with iTrip but it was hell trying to get the iPod to actually start broadcasting at the station (low 90's if I remember right). It's a pain and not really easy to do while you are travelling, so you have to do it at a stop. I would suggest trying the cassette route or plug-in if possible, seems much more easier, probably be good idea to invest in a new stereo to go with your iPod investment.
I would invest in a new stereo system too if my car was even worth near what antinous' car was worth, my car was totalled a couple of years ago (long story) but only on one side, so I can still drive it around, it works...

Oooh! Oooh!
Yep, still broken up. The lead singer is a Giants fan, rumor has it. They were one positive Pitchfork review from being able to make a living off their music, which is a damn shame.

I swear I'm not as old as Martin
Seriously, I feel I must be the most main-streamed person, ever. By far!!!
(Martin is totally kicking my ass in fantasy baseball this week.) (Does that get me any more street bullshittendness?) It really should. You can't get any geekier than losing to Martin. (and That's True!)
And I haven't asked Tom Gorman about deferred salaries yet, I'm an asshole.oleo!!!oleo!!I'm an asshole!!!.oleo!!!oleo!!!.oleo!!!!
Re: I swear I'm not as old as Martin

More to add
-Tim O'Brien, "Red on Blonde" album. I'm a sucker for Bob Dylan covers and this is let's see, guitar-bluesy folk type stuff.
-King Black Acid, "Love is a Long Song" -- I don't know how you'd categorize this band, maybe just rock, a little emo. It's all good.
I've hardly heard of any of the recs in here either. But I'm checking them all out on iTunes (sorry Irwin ... get into 2002, right!)
Re: OT - Open Music Thread
Other than that, it's been all bluegrass lately. Especially since I have dozens of as-yet-unlistened-to Bill Monroe live shows that I was sent recently.

And, of course, wearing the shirt = sex monkey
And further kicking it on the punky tip, McLusky McLuskyism has a diggable semi-melodic, semi-total screaming dissonance, goofy-lyrics shtick; if anyone remembers the local band Hickey, there's some similarities, although Hickey was better. Neat stuff, regardless. Kinda music to pull the wings off flies to, but hey, let us never do it in silence...

Re: I'm not a hater, I swear!
To be fair, I hated Modern Romance, too, so I was actually surprised by how much I like EV.
Get past the first song, which is crap (in fact, I have a burn in my car that leaves off the first and last songs; I always wanted a job as a "band editor," so I could declare "weak metaphor; omit," and "this part drags," and thereby create a world full of awesome albums). Most of the rest of it is just pure, dumb ("STRIIIIIIKE!"), hooky pop-punk. Heck, even that slavish Gang of 4 ripoff is totally enjoyable if you turn your brain off.
