OT - Open Music Thread

It's been a while since we did one of these. But, I just got a few new albums and felt like talking about them

1.) Red Hot Chili Pepppers - Stadium Arcadium [2 Discs]

Well, I still like the Red Hots, but this album is very much like their recent stuff and a testament to ProTools. Still, I like it.

Recommendation: Buy, if you are a RHCP fan.

2.) Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam

Their best album in a while, with far less bizarre  tracks that some of their albums have. There is a lot of political rants in the album, so some folks might be turned off by it. But the rants are fewer and easier to ignore than the ones in "Living with War"

Recommendation: Buy.

3.) Neil Young - Living With War

Very, very good. The first track "After the Garden" is my favorite as it reminds me of some of my Neil Young favorites. There is a lot of political rants in the album, so some folks might be turned off by it.

Recommendation: Buy, if you are a Neil Young fan.   I am not sure if it is still live, but you could listen to the whole album on his website.

4.) The Little Willies - The Little Willies

A MCC reader recommended this [and played on it?] and I have to thank him for it. Named for in honor of Willie Nelson, they play a few of his songs [but nothing most folks recognize] as well as Kris Kristofferson's and some originals. Norah Jones provides vocals, as well a some other guy whose name I have really enjoyed it a lot, especially track 5 "Best of all Possible Worlds" and track 8 "Gotta Get Drunk." It is country music, but with a very different feel than modern county music. Detest Toby Keith? So do I, and this album sounds nothing like him. Or Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, or Garth Brooks.

Recommendation: BUY, BUY, BUY. Unless you have an irrational dislike of all country music. Then you suck and are beyond help.

A couple iPod related questions:
1.) Has anybody had a good experience with Radio Adapters?
2.) Is there a way to get AM radio on the iPod like you can FM radio?

Thoughts? New stuff you have bought?

+Cibelle = "The Shine Of Dried Electric Leaves"
Brazilian-born, London-living guitarist making eclectic folktronica.  Guests include freakfolker Devendra Banhart and Seu Jorge, the guy who played the Bowie covers in Portuguese in The Life Aquatic.  This was a grower, took about 3 months and now I can't stop listening to it.

+various artists = DFA Remixes Chapter One
NYC production duo who fetishize live instrumentation0 (bass/drums) as much as their vintage sequencers and 808s turn Le Tigre, JSBX, Gorillaz and other upside-down/inside-out.  Not just dance music for indie-rockers, pretty nice party/driving compilation.

A one-track download recommendation:

"Diamonds and Guns" by The Transplants

This is also known as the "woo hoo" song from the Garnier Fructose shampoo commercials, but don't let that fool you; the song is way cool, even if it is three years (I think) old.

This post brought to you by Chico's Bail Bonds.

Against Me! - "Searching for the Former Clarity"

I really enjoy this album (far more than their earlier work, in fact);however, there is a lot of political rants in the album, so some folks might be turned off by it.

NoFX- "Wolves in Wolves' Clothing"

Not the best effort from this incredible band, but even a middling NoFX album rocks.

my belkin cassette adaptor suits me very well at the present and I have not noticed the dropoff in sound quality that others have complained about with the device.  Caveat: the adaptor did not work in my old car, a '95 Explorer.

Local product Rogue Wave (from Oakland). For any fans of The Shins, sub pop is marketing them as the band to listen to while you wait for the new Shins album. They are much more than that though.
New album: Descended Like Vultures. Song: Bird on a Wire.

Recent discoveries and obsessions...

"Heartbeats" by Jose Gonzalez (aka the song in the fantastic Sony Bravia commercial that was filmed in SF)

"One Man Guy" by Rufus Wainwright

"Muhammad Ali (And Me)" by Cory Branan

"Auf Achse" and "The Dark of the Matinee" by Franz Ferdinand

YOUTUBE - "As My Guitar Gently Weeps" performed by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, with ridiculously jaw-dropping guitar work by Prince.

"There'll Always Be Next Year" by The Heckler (a song about the Cubs, available for free download)

SELF-PROMOTION ALERT
"Lovers" by 29 Sunset (yes, that's my "band", and the song's available for free download on our MySpace site through that link)

Shoreline Ampitheater, oh the memories...

--I saw Guns N' Roses there in the early 90's. And, not to make you too jealous, but Skid Row opened for them (yes, THE Skid Row).

--A couple years later, I had tickets to see the Dead there, but they had to cancel when Jerry got sick (he died just a few months later if I'm not mistaken).

--Also, I actually helped build the place (okay, I just cleared away trash and brush on the space where they later built it) for public service as part of my agreement with the City of Palo Alto stemming from an incident with a BB gun (the details of which I choose to not reveal)

-Frank Black has a new album: Snake Oil -- available only on iTunes right now. Best track is his cover of "Changing of the Guards." (Black is the Pixies guy if you don't recognise the name.)

-Muse, "Plug In Baby" and "Stockholm Syndrome" are two good introductory songs

-Luther Wright and the Wrongs, "Rebuild the Wall" -- bluegrassish covers of The Wall.

Deerhoof isn't everyone's cup of tea -- they're not even always mine -- but their cover of My Bloody Valentine's "Lose My Breath" is very good. You can listen to it here (go to the 14:10 mark to start it).

Also, Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" is an amazingly catchy pop song.

iTrip experience
I bought an iTrip and found it mostly useless in SF -- no clear space on the spectrum. Outside the city it works pretty well, but I say go for the cassette adapter. Way fewer glitches and doesn't drain the battery.

Or, you could get a stereo with an aux. input on the front, which kicks the cassette adapter all to heck. And to think, I never could have found that out if someone hadn't smashed my window to take my $80 stereo....

I'm late to the portable music player revolution (silly me, still burning mix CDs and the like up through 2006), so when I finally got one and realized I couldn't use it in the car, the most logical place to use it, too, I was genuinely upset and cursed Toyota for failing to include that plug standard. Thanks for opening old wounds, Grant.

The new Tool album is pretty damn good. Unfortunately, you can't download it, but any Tool fan should own it. First track and single, Vicarious, is an instant Tool classic and the first half of the CD is also very good, dark and brooding. The 2nd half is harder to listen to at first, but it grows on you after awhile. CD case has great artwork, probably their best. Definitely worth the $.

Re: OT - Open Music Thread
I replaced the stock stereo in the Trapezoid Aphrodisiac (1995 Ford Escort station wagon) with an affordable JVC with a front panel mini line in, and swapped the speakers in the doors with a couple of nice, clean Fujistus... a fantastic investment of less than $400 that allows me to listen to both my iPod and my CDs in awesome clarity. Wait, what's that you say? It's stupid to replace the stereo in a car with a market value of $790? Bah!

I once had excellent taste in music - I was the first kid on the block to both R.E.M. and Pearl Jam - but now I aim for hooky singer-songwriter pop. So, my recommendation is...

Jack's Mannequin - Everything in Transit

It's a mix of Ben Folds, Joe Jackson, and Brian Wilson. A lovely little trifle for those who have a soft spot for piano pop. Exactly what the world was anticipating when it clamored for the all-star pairing of Something Corporate frontman Andrew McMahon and rock god Tommy Lee!

Re: OT - Open Music Thread
This is not something new I got recently, but a band that I'm obsessed with is The Apples In Stereo.  If you love great pop music, like the Beatles and Beach Boys, you will love them.  Their musical influence, unsurprisingly is Beach Boys (leader of the band) but his wife, then girlfriend, picked this name for the band, so I assume she must love the Beatles (Apple.  In Stereo.)

A friend at work turned me on to them.  I bought Tone Soul Evolution and fell in love, literally, I was on a high for a couple of weeks before the buzz went away, and I have bought every album since.  While none ever matched that first album for me, I have enjoyed greatly each subsequent album.  They are part of the Elephant 8 collective who help each other out and mix and match people into new bands, most with a focus on pop music.

I also really love Garbage and get their albums when it first comes out (I wait for most to go on deep sale before getting, it's the way my mom taught me, depression era, WPA, and all, so I have to really like them to do this).

More recent turn-ons is Keane's Hopes and Fears, the first album that from start to finish really had songs that matched the title and it's great music too.

My latest album purchase was High School Musical.  It was a nice movie and great songs, though I still cannot believe that the album set all sorts of records for dominating the Billboard Top 100, shows that Disney knows how to manipulate the charts I guess, the songs are good but not that good.

My last concert was Paul McCartney, it was nice taking my kids to see him, they were all so excited (they are both Beatles fans, probably because I listen to them so much).

About the iPod, I was able to find a station that I could listen to it with iTrip but it was hell trying to get the iPod to actually start broadcasting at the station (low 90's if I remember right).  It's a pain and not really easy to do while you are travelling, so you have to do it at a stop.  I would suggest trying the cassette route or plug-in if possible, seems much more easier, probably be good idea to invest in a new stereo to go with your iPod investment.

I would invest in a new stereo system too if my car was even worth near what antinous' car was worth, my car was totalled a couple of years ago (long story) but only on one side, so I can still drive it around, it works...

-King Black Acid, "Love is a Long Song" -- I don't know how you'd categorize this band, maybe just rock, a little emo. It's all good.

Other than that, it's been all bluegrass lately. Especially since I have dozens of as-yet-unlistened-to Bill Monroe live shows that I was sent recently.

Pretty Girls Make Graves' new one (Elan Vital) does not suck.  It, in fact, very strongly does not suck.  For a band that always seemed to me on the edge of toppling into major sucking, the new one is dandy.  Catchy but arty punk band fronted by a woman with monster pipes and, apparently, a taste for sampling the Fugees (one time!  two times!).

And further kicking it on the punky tip, McLusky McLuskyism has a diggable semi-melodic, semi-total screaming dissonance, goofy-lyrics shtick; if anyone remembers the local band Hickey, there's some similarities, although Hickey was better.  Neat stuff, regardless.  Kinda music to pull the wings off flies to, but hey, let us never do it in silence...

Hater.

To be fair, I hated Modern Romance, too, so I was actually surprised by how much I like EV.

Get past the first song, which is crap (in fact, I have a burn in my car that leaves off the first and last songs; I always wanted a job as a "band editor," so I could declare "weak metaphor; omit," and "this part drags," and thereby create a world full of awesome albums).  Most of the rest of it is just pure, dumb ("STRIIIIIIKE!"), hooky pop-punk.  Heck, even that slavish Gang of 4 ripoff is totally enjoyable if you turn your brain off.
