Melo has been in the organization before
Fresno had to borrow Cordido from SJ to play third a few days ago, so I assume he's going to be returned shortly.  Good to see Ish back.  Hopefully he won't be struck by the curse when he returns to Norwich.

Re: Giant Transactions
Melo is obviously a warning to Vizcaino. If VizII is hitting .190 in mid-June, Melo could become the backup. (And hit .190.)

Where did you hear about the Ish/Sanchez callups?

Re: Giant Transactions
I love it! The Giants needed a lefty PH and Ishikawa can be that (at least until Niekro is due off the DL in 4 days), and while this might not be the best thing for Sanchez I'm way too excited at the prospect of seeing him to care right now.

Re: Giant Transactions
Suddenly Donavan's "Mellow Yellow" is singing in my head...

I hope that they are starting Ishikawa all the games (or at least against all RHP), not just PHing him, Vizcaino can be the lefty PH.

I'm disappointed with the promotion of Sanchez because most pitchers need to pitch a full year in AAA to figure out things before making it in the big show.  But I agree with Josh that it is exciting to see how he does.  And not every pitcher needs a full year, there is that small percentage who just does well and go from there, so I'll keep my fingers (and toes) crossed (I'm yogic - in that I follow the lessons of Yogi Bear and Boo-boo).

Re: Giant Transactions
Well, if Ishikawa starts, Sweeney would be the lefty PH (especially since Barry said he's playing every game vs. COL).

What does it mean for Linden
that he was bypassed here?

Actually, to answer my own question, maybe all it means is:  "Holy crap, we've been starting Jose Vizcaino at 1B! Somebody do something!!"

Re: What does it mean for Linden
I'd like to think it's more like Linden just came back from a long layoff, and rotting at the end of an Alou bench isn't going to do anyone any favors.

My pen pal Todd Linden told me he was hurt
Todd confided in me personally, on these pages, that he had a bum thumb for a few months. I also chat daily with Brian Sabean, and my new Canadian best friend, Eatgardo Alfredo.

Gotta love the Chronicles.

Re: What does it mean for Linden
I agree but Linden didn't do himself any favors by telling the press this week that the Giants either use him or trade him.  Felipe was calm in his response, explaining that had Linden been HEALTHY, he would have gotten the call.

Whattheheck?
WTH do we need Melo for?  We certainly have plenty of non-prospect infielders who can fill in when needed.  Cordido isn't essential in SJ.

by DrBGiantsfan on May 25, 2006 10:46 PM PDT reply actions

Re: Whattheheck?
There are already a lot of fill-ins that shouldn't be where they are...I think the big thing was the lack of Triple-A infielders....especially with Frandsen up, Fresno was short handed, and one of their utility guys, A.J. Labarbera quit this month.  Shabala was in the infield when he could/should have been playing the outfield, and Horwitz was not helping himself in Triple-A and was horribly overmatched.  If having Melo even means that a B or C lister like Horwitz gets an honest chance at progressing instead of being rushed ahead of his time, I'm all for it.

"WTH do we need Melo for?"

Well for starters, Steve Scarsone, Edwards Guzman and Jay Canizaro all were unavailable.

But that still doesn't explain why not Kim Batiste.

Giants roster may be messed up but...
...it's no match for the Nats, who currently show on MLB.com as having, on their active roster, 1 catcher, 9 infielders, and 3 outfielders. And one of the OFers is Soriano!

Re: Giants roster may be messed up but...
not to mention the debacle that occurred yesterday when Matt LeCroy started at catcher, made 2 throwing errors (which I saw and were both thrown nowhere NEAR 2nd base) and allowed 7 stolen bases in 6+ innings.  Robinson then yanked him from the game and (despite beating Houston) cried during the post game news conference.  Oh and they're still owned by MLB and play in a 40 year old bowl.
2002? I'm over it.

Re: Giants roster may be messed up but...
Frank Robinson didn't just yank him--he did it in the middle of the inning.  I can't ever remember a catcher getting yanked like that unless he had a limb hacked off.

Re: Praying he doesn't become Merkin II
Outside of Snatchwig's "stuff", did he really do anything above A ball that warranted a shot in the bigs?

Re: Praying he doesn't become Merkin II
He was one of our ten million "closers of the future" but that means basically nothing. Wasn't Jeremy Accardo also referred to as such?

Meant to reply to your comment, not the OP.

by BaronVonCurrentEvents on May 26, 2006 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Praying he doesn't become Merkin II
I think Accardo and Wilson both have a chance to be closers someday. Snatchwig has been somewhat of a dissapointment after all the hype. Although, a fair argument can be made that the Giants "jimmy-jacking" him around hasn't helped.

by mxmob33 on May 26, 2006 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions

It's a Proving Ground; Some prove inadequate
So Merkin got his butt roasted in the highest-stress situation possible after a callup.

He failed.

Talented athletes, maturing athletes -- real men -- learn from that and come back. If he doesn't, he never had what it takes.

No amount of front office fiddling can keep down a real major leaguer.

Re: It's a Proving Ground; Some prove inadequate
I'm with you, Moggeee. Well, sorta. I mean, I don't believe that Merkin can't throw strikes in Fresno today because Adam Dunn a-scared him two years ago. There are a thousand things that can go wrong with a young pitcher; I have no idea what's wrong with Valdez right now.

But I do agree that if Valdez was so fragile that one swing of Adam Dunn's bat could ruin his career, then he was never going to amount to anything anyway.

I think there's a good chance that Sanchez will succeed, regardless of what Justin Knoedler thinks. But if he struggles, it's not going to kill him.

Re: Giant Transactions
Does anybody else remember that this a homecoming of sorts for Juan Melo.  I'm pretty sure that he was in our organization before and he may have even spent some time on the big club.  If my memory serves me right though, it seems like it was mid to late 90's so maybe it was someone else, although it would certainly fit the age model that Sabes likes so much.....

11 games with the G-men in 2000, according to Baseball Cube. I knew the name was vaguely familiar but I didn't remember he was a former Giant until I looked up the stats.

He's 30 now, so maybe he is the new 'second baseman of the future'...

I remember getting "the new guys" (Melo and Feliz) mixed up during their cups of coffee in 2000. One of them used to wear his socks really high... I think that was Melo. Haven't thought about the guy since.
