Open Gameday Thread, 5/20

I echo all of the sentiments about Alou's lineup. Vizcaino at-bats should be a last resort, not things that are encouraged. The guy does nothing well at the plate.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 5/20
First off, and  I know this was supposed to  be in yesterday's thread, but whenever I hum the "Ride of the Valkyries", I can only think of Elmer Fudd singing "Kill the Wabbit,  Kill the Wabbit, ..."  Does anyone else have that problem?

As far as Viz II, it didn't seem that Felipe played veterans at any costs, pre-Giants.  Is this in his Sabletti contract?  Ever since Brian told us about his penchent for biker bars, I have this frightening image of him performing some pagan contract signing ritual with Felipe, involving masks, hooded robes, candles, wooden mallets, a butchered ox and photos of players signed in the 80's.

Help me.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 5/20
Yeah me too, I loved that Bugs Bunny cartoon.  Though I always felt weird when Bugs would cross-dress and play Brunhilda (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I also have a similar thing happen with the Marriage of Figaro and the Barber of Seville (you know, the scene where Bugs massages Elmer's head and flowers and grass grow from it eventually, then he uses a mini-lawn mower to cut it off).

Go Niekro and Feliz!!!

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 5/20
I think I figured this one out.  As a guy who's been in the National League most of his life, Felipe has a natural abhorrance for the DH (which I can respect).  His reasoning was probably "You can make me the use the DH, but you can't make me benefit from it!  Mwah ha ha....mwah ha ha."  And hence, we had Viz II batting 9th last night, which is bascially the same as (or maybe worse than) as having Lowry hitting 9th; the way things should be.

Re: Enough already!
Steve,

I really appreciate all you've done for this team.  Of course, the most important thing you've done is help us get rid of Alfonzo.  Anyway, I was hoping maybe you could show your pal Barry a couple of hitting techniques or something, he's been slumping a little and could probably use the advice of a veteran such as yourself.  Anyway, thanks again for being a good player and see if you can't get us a win today huh?

2002? I'm over it.

by wjackalope on May 20, 2006 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Get rid of Alfonzo?
I assume that is some kind of brainfart by you. Edgardo Alfonzo is an All-Star and Silver Slugger who can be expected to hit .324/.425/.542 every year, just like he did in 2000. He is a fine fielder with career fielding percentage and range factor well above league average, and can play second base, third base and even shortstop with no trouble at all. He even has an excellent 75% stolen base percentage for his career.

What's more, Alfonzo is a poet and philanthropist, and perhaps the most handsome man I have ever met. He is modest too - he handed over his prized #13 shirt to Omar Vizquel last year, even though Vizquel is a midget scrub not worthy to be in Edgardo's lordly presence. But Alfonzo did it anyway, just to demonstrate what a humble team player he is. Edgardo Alfonzo is a sure-fire Hall of Famer still in his prime, and any team should consider itself blessed to have him.

Free Edgardo Alfonzo!

Re: cubs-sox
Although I hate AJ as much as anybody, my first reaction was that it was a good, clean play by him and the fight was 100% Barrett's fault. But after hearing Barrett explain his side in the post game press conference, he made a great point: While it appeared on the replay that AJ was just heading back to his dugout when Barrett mugged him, he was actually headed toward the Cubs dugout -- and bumped into the still-dazed Barrett unnecessarily. Knowing AJ as I do -- and knowing there's absolutely no reason to head toward the opposing team's dugout -- I can only assume that was a provocation of some sort on AJ's part.

If only we had a bullpen
remember last night when the A's starter had pitched 8 strong innings, and had a one run lead entering the ninth?  They took him out and put in the closer who promptly got a 1-2-3 ninth to end it.  Today our starter goes 8 strong, has a one run lead entering the ninth and we run him out there even though he's thrown about 673 pitches, because we trust absolutely nobody in the bullpen.  If we knew how to draft (or how to avoid trading 3 very good pitchers for a worthless catcher) we wouldn't have this problem.

This is an apropos time to point out that the dancing guy is just Peanuts Goon #4, and not the actual Charlie Brown.

Yeah, I was searching the net far and wide to see if that charactar had a name, since it was bugging me that people were calling him "Charlie". "Dancing Goon #4" works.

Is there any way to get a gif of all the kids dancing?

Checked with Skippy Baxter of the Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, although not positive, he believes that the character is Shermy.

That little girl is adorable.  Did you guys see her announcing players with Darrn Baker the other day?  Hard to believe she came from Barry's surly loins.
