Garner also got 1 game, plus a fine.

Wow, 4 games, i dont know why, but that seems like a lot, although for a pitcher, 4 games is nothing.

Re: Springer: 4 Game suspensioin
Funny. If the jackass had beaned him on the first pitch, there probably would have been a warning and that would have been the end of it. Instead, he got suspended one game for each failed plunking.

The lesson, as always: lack of command will get you into trouble.

Re: Springer: 4 Game suspensioin
I disagree, it was a pretty lame suspension, particularly in view of how close it was to Bonds head and how he obviously was trying to hit Bonds and how there was no reason for it apparent to anyone.  Plus the odd comments made by teammates about the whole "he wasn't but there's reason for it..." convoluted line of talk.

He gets into about half the games played so he's really only missing 2 games, at most.  It'll be over before he knows it.  It should have been at least 10 games and 15 games seems about right to me.  That will give him time to think about it plus he'll be itching to pitch by the end of it, whereas this is just a little rest from the manager.  Plus 4 days off is a rest, 10-15 days off and he needs to get the rust off as well as get his groove back.

Re: Springer: 4 Game suspensioin
I think we finally have a concrete answer to why Springer threw at Bonds.

During today's Cubs/Sox game the suspension was brought up and Bob Brenly, who managed Springer with the D-Backs in 2001 when Bonds homered off him, said Bonds stood at the plate to admire his shot. He said that angered Springer, who hit Bonds the next time they faced each other in 2004.

Re: Springer: 4 Game suspensioin
I should add: By hitting Bonds, Springer was insuring he wouldn't be the one to give up #714, a fate he probably couldn't bear to stomach.

Re: Springer: 4 Game suspensioin
Omigod, a batter actually stood at the plate to admire a homer that he hit? That never happens! And to have that horrible memory of being shown up stuck in your craw for five years (even though you got your revenge by beaning him two years ago)...well, this changes everything. Springer's actions were totally justified. Not only should he not be suspended for four games, he should be promoted to Commissioner of Baseball.

Re: Springer: 4 Game suspensioin
Not defending Springer, but Drysdale and Gibson would have done exactly the same thing.  And when you think of great pitchers, Drysdale, Gibson and Springer just sort of roll of the tongue.

Re: Springer: 4 Game suspensioin
Well, that showed the Giants, didn't it, they only scored another 20-something runs over the rest of the series.  Who knows how many runs they would have scored if he didn't avenge something that happened when he was with another team 5 years ago when he owes his current team the world for giving him one last chance at being a major leaguer.

You would think a pitcher with a lifetime 5.05 ERA and 1.45 WHIP and hasn't been on a major league roster for the full season in 4 of the past 6 seasons would just worry about, you know, preventing runs from scoring, instead of avenging a 5 year old homerun watch.

What an odd career, he's 37 years old, a RHP (so he's not a loogy), has played a major league game in 14 of the last 15 years and yet at best has played 5 seasons (6 if he lasts out this season) on the roster the full year.  His career really should have been over 5 years ago, but for some reason the Astros gave him one last shot, after he had ERAs of 7.13 and 8.31 his two previous major seasons, and he's been doing OK, in fact, pretty darn good (by his, umm, standards) the past two years, arguably the best two year stretch that he's ever had.

Re: Springer: 4 Game suspensioin
When Springer hit Bonds in 2004, Barry took an inordinately long time to stroll from 1st base to the dugout...  I believe he was pinch ran for, but I do remember thinking at the time that Bonds was definitely showing up Springer.  Surprised no one on BT has mentioned it, esp. in light of his "admiring" the HR in their previous encounter.

Which is another reason I love the Bonds...  who the fuck is Russ Springer, really?  Suspension should have been longer.
