Open Gameday Thread 4/3, Part II

When the previous post gets up to 200 posts, start using this one. I leave for five minutes, and this is what I come back to. - Grant

(Flexing my recently inflated McC muscles...Grant said it was only flaxseed oil.)

Are you ready for some baseball, some Monday night baseball?

For better or worse, in sickness and in health, our beloved 2006 Giants take the field in beautiful San Diego today in a game that matters.

Rain could be a factor as they're having lousy weather down there, too.

For your reading pleasure, here's what they're saying about the Bonds show down in San Diego: http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/padres/20060403-9999-1s3bonds.html

Re: Does it worry
Normally, it would. But the Pads have always killed him the last couple of years, and he really seems to struggle against them with 2 strikes. So far, this has been a nice bounce-back for him.

Actually, Woody started that game. But he didn't get the win, I remember him leaving with the game tied and the bases loaded, no outs, but Nathan came in and got out of it. I'm gonna say Eyre and Worrell.

0-1.  Ouch.  And FSN+ tomorrow, which on my TV is showing a black black dark screen of oblivion.

Re: Open Gameday Thread 4/3, Part II
Did the Padres close the game with two ex-giants that were given away just to taunt us?

Why is Taschner being used as a LOOGY instead of a Fassero or Kline?

I want Joe Nathan back.

Game wasn't close enough to use the "good" pitchers, I guess.

Re: Open Gameday Thread 4/3, Part II
let's get real:
  1.  Peavy is a Cy Young contender for a reason
  2.  Schmidt isn't the same pitcher that you could count on for 10 Ks and a 1-0 victory.
We'll get it back tomorrow and Wednesday because depth makes a difference.  Won the opener last year and what the hell did that get us?

Re: Open Gameday Thread 4/3, Part II

Re: Open Gameday Thread 4/3, Part II
And Niekro did a good job of showing Plate Discipline, in some serious pitcher's counts against just about the best pitcher in the NL.

Re: Open Gameday Thread 4/3, Part II
Just got back from downtown SD after watching the game (and seeing UCLA ham it up, god damnit). I walked around to the terrace level behind home plate to check out some of our guys swing more closely- pretty impressed with the way Niekro handled Peavy, fighting off good pitches in pitcher's counts. He seems more patient overall, though time will tell. Bit of a positive note on this shitty day in sports...my other fantasy starter (Zito) got rocked to boot.

dood...... don't panic bout zito.  he crapped himself last year too.  i picked him up as f/a in a 12 team AL only league.  chavez starts really slow too.  hang onto both if you are in al only

Re: Open Gameday Thread 4/3, Part II
The broadcast made it sound like Schmidt's breaking balls were way off, too.  Everytime he threw a slider it wasn't near the zone.  Without ability to command the corners and nothing to throw but fastballs and a change right down the pipe, I suppose we're lucky he only gave up four runs over 7 innings.

Even when he was getting outs, they seemed to be all deep flyballs, so I guess he wasn't hitting the bottom of the zone.  He was getting mostly groundouts during spring so he was probably just amped up.

Look for Schmidt to be solid next time out.  He'll never be Jason the Cy Young Candidate again, but he's still a legitimate ace.

Pretty Ugly...
Even when I was just listening to it. Maybe that was just Greg Papa's voice though. They seemed to be impressed with the stuff that Schmidt regained but now he just needs to regain the command. Win Exp up: http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/story/2006/4/4/1812/28998
