Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident

Am I the only one that thinks Mesa deserved a lot more than a 4 game suspension?  I can't believe that you could publicly state your intent to kill a player, throw the ball at him (more than once), and not receive a more severe punishment.

Re: Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident
I agree, Mesa definitely deserves more, but I'm happy to see Morris didn't get suspended, that would have been an injustice.

Re: Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident
That's an excellent point.  There's no doubt in my mind that Morris hit him intentionally, but I think that it was inevitable after Mesa's actions and the subsequent lack of action by the umpires. I'm definitely glad that they just gave Morris a fine.

Re: Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident
I am amazed!  First of all, MLB has their weird way of handing out progressive discipline, and to them this Mesa thing was handled properly.  I, of course disagree.  The way things are going, the Giants are forced to make a pretty ridiculous decision whenever they face the Rockies now.....do they lift Omar if he has to face Mesa in order to protect him, or do they let him dig in and take the next beanball to the face.  Either way it is an injustice to Omar and to the Giants and their fans.  Omar is clearly our best SS and to have any less in there because of a lunatic on the mound isn't fair.  At the same time if you're Omar how comfortable can you be standing in there against this guy, do you really think he has any chance at a solid AB?  Mesa is crazy and dangerous and completely sackless.  Here's hoping that Omar doesn't end up getting hurt.

Secondly, Baseball actually got the Morris situation correct.  They realized that the umpires did nothing and that the unwritten baseball rules came into play.  Can anyone else remember a situation where a pitcher threw at someone so blatantly, and didn't get a suspension?  Also, How did Felipe get away with nothing, especially after admitting to the retaliation on the air?

I think MLB tried to do the right thing here, and almost did.

Re: Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident
I'm guessing they also told Mesa, "and if you do it again..." threatening something REALLY harsh.

If they did so, and have informed the Giants, I think Omar can get in there with a fair degree of certaintly that it's over.

If you want to mess with Finley, you'll have to go through me first.

Re: Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident
Doesn't anyone remember when Clemens moved to the NL and said that he'd knock Bonds' elbow armor off when he faced him?  There was a whole bunch of hoopla building up to the matchup and then of course Clemens drills him.  No repercussions by MLB.  Or Shawn Estes.

Re: Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident
Oh yeah......although that was in 2002 when the Giants played in NY against the Yanks....

Right...Clemens said he was "...going to introduce himself to Bonds' body armor."

Re: Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident
Who did Estes throw at?  My memory recalls that he was supposed to plunk someone but totally missed him.

Re: Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident
That proved once and for all that Estes is completely useless as a baseball player.

Re: Discipline for Rockies/Giants Incident
I'd have probably given Mesa a bit stiffer penalty -- six games, maybe eight -- but that's marginal. All in all, nicely done.

(Personally, I'd actually arrest Mesa and press charges, but given the "rules" we play with ... )

Anybody heard a reaction from Mr. Table yet?

Update 2: Rockies' Mesa Appeals 4-Game Suspension
04.28.2006, 06:06 PM

Colorado Rockies pitcher Jose Mesa was suspended four games by Major League Baseball on Friday for intentionally throwing at San Francisco shortstop Omar Vizquel.

Mesa appealed the suspension and was available for this weekend's series against the Florida Marlins. He threw at Vizquel's head during the eighth inning of last Saturday's game at Denver.

Giants pitcher Matt Morris and pitching coach Dave Righetti were fined undisclosed amounts for their actions during a game the following day.

Morris was fined for intentionally throwing at Colorado's Matt Holliday in the first inning. Righetti was fined for throwing his pitch counter onto the field and yelling at umpire Travis Reininger after being ejected.
