Omar and Mesa
The more I think about this, the more pissed off I get. Mesa should have been tossed immediately, and he should be facing a suspension. MLB should have stepped in long ago and told him that the next time he nails Vizquel, he's facing a 30 game suspension.
I can't believe that you can vow to hit a guy every time you face him, proceed to do so every time, and not face any repercussions.

Re: Omar and Mesa
The league dropped the ball on this one; they should keep umps briefed on these types of situations.
What I'm most pissed off about is that Mesa never has to come to the plate and face the music. It reminds me of Clemens and Martinez drilling people in the AL and making their teammates pay the price since they didn't have to hit.

- He doesn't have it in him.
- Even if he does, he rarely hits his targets.

Re: Omar and Mesa
Mesa should have been put on notice after the first time he hit Vizquel after he made his threat. And the Rockies should face extensive penalties for their second hit on Vizquel in yesterday's game, starting with their manager and Mesa, for at least 2 weeks to a month in suspension. There was no excuse for the second hit on Vizquel, that was pretty obvious.
And really, who would hit Eli Morrero as a purpose pitch anyway? Atkins, Hawpe, maybe, since Helton was out, but Morrero? Morris was just off with that one (though I would suspect the Holliday one was a purpose pitch). Only an idiot would hit Morrero just after getting warned.

Goofus points out the crux of the problem
Since Alderson and Robby have left MLB's front office, the umpiring seems to have declined. Not only in execution, not only in last year's playoffs, but already any number of blown calls early this season, on the basepaths, not to mention wandering strike zones from hell.
When Alderson was the enforcer, the umps were held on a tight leash, subject to a lot of review by the MLB office, and reminded constantly that nobody was paying big ticket prices nor pumping up TV revenues to watch a showboat in blue interject themselves into games either passively or proactively. The mandate was to be invisible by being excellent. I don't know who's running things from NYC now, but it seems apparent that there is a lack of consistency and that the quality of umpiring overall has declined.
During the Washington/Atlanta game last night the ESPN k-zone consistently showed pitches in the strike zone being called balls. It got so bad, they stopped putting up the k-zone graphic.
That the circus in Denver lasted for 3 days tells me that somebody has their head up their ass with these crews.
The situation demanded early intervention by the MLB head office even before the series began. That it lasted the entire 3 game series is an indication that MLB front office have their minds elsewhere.
So far, what I've seen in Giant's games is rivaling on unprofessionalism. I've seriously seen more consistant umpiring at high school and college level.
