Who ends up in Fresno?

So Brad Hennessey shuts down the explosive Dodgers in a masterly performance. Spot start only?

On Wednesday or so, Benitez comes off the DL. And in another week or so, Lowry comes back, too.

That's two roster spots.

Who gets a bus trip to Fresno? Taschner? Correia? Hennessey? Aren't some of these guys out of options?

Is Sabean gearing up for a trade?

A lot of teams need pitching, and the Giants seem to have it.

Re: Who ends up in Fresno?
Hennessey might be headed straight back -- i think they just needed him to start today because of the way the double-headers fell in the schedule.

For my money Taschner, lefty or no, has pitched his way back to Fresno.

options
Taschner, Correia, Hennessey seem like the obvious options to return to Fresno.  None of them are out of options.  The youngest player on the 40-man roster who is out of options is Tyler Walker (who turns 30 next month).

Re: Who ends up in Fresno?
Taschner for sure.  Shame to send Henny down after that masterful performance.  But forget putting him in the SF bullpen, he's a starter all the way.  And he has the stuff -- he just needs to work on consistency.  He can do that in the PCL.

What about Correia?  Does he belong at the MLB level now?

by orangeandblackattack on Apr 16, 2006 11:26 PM PDT reply actions

Well...
The option is who is our 5th starter now?  We have Schmidt, Morris, Cain, Wright, and either Correia and Hennessey.  I think that Hennessey has shown that he can be that starter, but maybe Correia can give you more consistent (perhaps worse) starts.  So it's one of them going down right now and Accardo coming back up.  We need relievers going into Chase Field and Coors Field.

When Benitez comes back, probably Taschner gets sent down.

When Lowry is eligible, the 5th starter goes back down.

That's how I'd do it.

Whatever happened to Jason Ellison?

Re: Who ends up in Fresno?
I'd send Taschner now, then Hennessey when Lowry comes back and is for-sure ready.  I'm still worried about Lowry coming back too early.
If you want to mess with Finley, you'll have to go through me first.

Re: Who ends up in Fresno?
We saw the good Hennessey on Sunday.  There is not telling when the awful Hennessey will show - perhaps his next start.  I say Hennessey goes back down when Lowrey comes off the DL and Benitez should have some work in AAA to make sure he is ready to come off the DL.

I'm
not a fan of Correia and won't be bothered if he's sent back to Fresno or even booted off the 40-man roster. It seems like it's been a long time since he was any good.

Last Year?
Didn't Kevin Correia pitch quite well as recently as the end of last season?

Re: Who ends up in Fresno?
Hennessey probably makes one more start.  If it is also a quality start, I think they take more time with Lowery, including, maybe, a start at Fresno before being activated.  If Hennessey is doing the job, why take a chance and rush Lowery.

Re: Who ends up in Fresno?
Good point.  We just signed Noah through 2009.  A couple of extra weeks isn't going to make a difference in the long run.

Burning up pitchers in April
Giving Lowry extra rest would be prudent, but then you have Felipe managing every day like it's Game 7 in October vs. the Yankees.

For instance, Matt Morris is listed on one sports site as a probable starter vs. Arizona tonight. That's three days' rest, not four, and doesn't help the big picture if Fassero or Correia pitch on Tuesday anyway. It's just a flip-flop.

But if Felipe goes this route, it's because he wants to set the tone with a first-night win in a four-game series. He wants to separate now from the Western Division pack, if he can.

He has 100 wins in 2003 as his road map.

Look out Giant arms, young and old....

Giants' website says Fassero is starting: http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060416&content_id=1404401&a mp;vkey=news_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf

"Jeff Fassero, 43, will make the 242nd start of his career Monday as a fill-in due to recent rainouts, Noah Lowry's injury and a recent split doubleheader that skewed the rotation."

If you want to mess with Finley, you'll have to go through me first.

So you'd prefer Correia?

Re: Burning up pitchers in April
Although I love to watch Correia go through his ritual of spits and facial ticks before each throw, I doubt the widsom of giving him a start in a building like the Dback Homerdome.

Fassero is likely to give up as many bombs, but he can bounce back better than the kid -- and his job isn't in jeopardy with one bad performance. The Greyhound for Fresno is waiting for Correia if he is shelled.

These less-than-solid options underpin the speculation of a Morris start tonight.

Morris start
Some sites automate their expected pitching rotations and would automatically move up a pitcher due to the doubleheader. I haven't heard anyone with the Giants discuss the possibility of a Morris start tonight.

Re: Burning up pitchers in April
I wouldn't say I prefer either. I'm not saying our alternative options are better, but any time I hear Jeff Fassero is starting today's game for the Giants I chalk it up to bad news.

Neikro down, too.  Bench Feliz for Vizcaino, and sit Winn tonight!

Time for the average baseball age 39 year-old starting lineup!
