Around SBN: An Explanation For Some Of The Perplexing HOF Snubs

Carlos Pena

From Peter Gammons' Weblog on espn.com.

"One of the tough things in the Tigers' camp is that it appears Carlos Pena will get released so the club will have to pay him only a sixth of his $2.8 million salary. Pena still has great power, and when he finds his way to another team and makes some adjustments, he can still be a big offensive player."

Interesting to know. Although I think the Giants are committed to giving Niekro a shot.

Re: When...

I usually like his small moves, it's his big moves that I usually don't like.

Trades: I like all of last years trades, except the Winn trade. Though I would have dealt players earlier.

Alfonzo for Finley was fine.

I liked the Jamey Wright signing [but I wouldn't be virtually guaranteeing him a spot]. And the Todd Greene signing. I could live with the Vizquel. Sweeney was ok as well.

The Dodgers ARE evil.

Those are good examples...
but I meant "moves we, the lunatic fringe, specifically advocated beforehand".  HA! I pulled of a lawyer trick

Re: Those are good examples...
Damn you...yeah, he is pretty lousy at reading my mind.

Maybe I'll just start advocating horribly stupid moves, so that they won't happen.

Here goes: The Giants need a lefty 1B - Darrin Erstad could fit the bill. Let's send them Cain for him.

As a former viola player in HS orchestra AND a former HS French student....that would be "voila."

Re: Carlos Pena
no. Pena is basically a slightly more polished version of Niekro.  He would probably be a little better than Lance this year, but not worth the $2 million+ we'd have to pay for him.  That's money that would probably be much better spent on a more significant midseason (unless Sabean really screws up).

That bit about saving money...
...the Tigers are assuming he would be picked up on waivers, no? If he clears waivers the Tigers would end up paying most of his salary, wouldn't they?

Re: That bit about saving money...
I suppose so.  If that were the case, I'd definitely advocate picking him up.  But if he cleared waivers he'd probably drop to some other team first... this isn't Tom Goodwin we're talking about here.  Pena has some value - in fact, he has just a touch more than Niekro.  I would never pay 2.3 million for him, but I'd gladly give up 20% of that.

who hits right-handed pitchers better than Niekro. [so it seems. I am not sold that Niekro's huge platoon split will hold up]

Re: Carlos Pena
I'd love the Giants to pick up Pena. While I like his power and his potential, its his glove I like most. I'm just spoiled by all these years watching a gold glove at first. Perhaps Niekro will turn into a quality glove but he's not there yet.

Re: Forgetting something, aren't we?
i think he once wrote something along the lines of "Hank Aaron currently holds the home run record with 755." I'm pretty sure he got that right.

Re: Carlos Pena
There's no way in hell we get a 1B with a career batting average of .243.   Even if he is better than Niekro (which he clearly is - better OBA and power, unless Detroit is some kinda pseudo-canadian colorado)

Re: Carlos Pena
If he is better than Niekro, why not get him? It costs next to nothing.

Check out his L/R splits.

Also, Comerica is very much a pitchers park.

Re: Carlos Pena
I'm not saying we should or shouldn't get him.
I'm saying that I know my Sabeans and it's a moot point.  No way would he sign a guy who's batting average was that low.  Unless he was a slick fielding catcher.  Even then.
