Dallimore Retires

Just saw this.

Not sure what happened, but I wish him the best on whatever he plans on doing next.

Re: Dallimore Retires
I'm not an expert in baseball so don't kill me for asking:  Why didn't Dallimore have a better chance on the Giants?  His 1st AB Grand Slam should have earned him a little more credit.  Anyone got a "Baseball for Dummies" answer to why Dallimore wasn't considered a utility infielder?

I wouldn't turn to Baseball For Dummies.

Dallimore is too old to be a prospect, perhaps even old enough that his abilities as a utility infielder may be declining. Combine that with whatever injuries he may have suffered recently, and the golden carrot of a MLB salary may not be enough to make him keep grinding it out in the minors.

Re: Dallimore Retires
Guess that sort of made him the Crash Davis of middle infielders.

"I'm your new shortstop and you just had your first lesson."

"I was in the show once. Hit a grand slam in my 3rd AB."

Re: Dallimore Retires
I don't blame him for quitting, but I do think the Gints absolutely wasted him.  Cody Ransom?  Now Vizcaino?  Come on.  50 career ABs?  Come on.  His worst year of 4 AAA seasons, he batted .294.  Cody Ransom?  Come on.

The guy led the PCL in batting and didn't even get a Sept. callup that year IIRC.  Come on.

I suppose he's 33 now, but then again that's a spring chicken in MLBPA Pensioner Medicare Field sponsored by ExLax.

Re: Dallimore Retires
Last spring he hit .491 too!
Hmm....I didn't know that.

Re: Dallimore Retires
I love Dallimore's story, but his first AAA season was his second good season of hitting.  The problem there is that he was 28 years old playing against players who, if they are a good prospect, is 22-25 years old, or, if they are older, they aren't MLB pitchers.

He's entering the prime of his life, a man hitting against kids who are still learning things.  Of course he's going to hit against them, he has age and strength advantage over most of the pitchers there.  It would be like a college player hitting against high school pitchers, though obviously not as bad.

Plus he can't play SS well, whereas Vizcaino is a career SS and his main function is backing up Vizquel.

Re: Dallimore Retires
Hey, not so hard on Cody Ransom vis a vis Brian Dallimore. Ransom, on paper, was a rare commodity: A slick fielding prospect of a shortstop with size, speed and a little bit of power. His downfall? He proved on several occasions to choke on the field when the game pressure was ratcheted up. What we really lost in the Cody Ransom experiment was Neifi Perez (Oy! Released!), a solid utility player who has done well with the Cubs. It would take two Vizcainos to make one Neifi.

Re: Dallimore Retires
Only (big) problem was that Neifi was paid like a starter, not like a utility player, and worse - was starting.

Re: Dallimore Retires
Neifi is a good fielder, at least skills-wise, but his skills are good enough that he gets lazy with his throws and I think his attention seems to waver.

I don't care what Ransom's paper looked like.  He did zilch all that year except take up a roster spot, until his great moment at the end of the season.  If an NL team is going to carry a "defensive replacement" for an infielder, he'd better be replacing someone truly terrible, which I don't think was the case.  And he was useless as a pinch hitter, while I really think Dallimore would have been handy to have in that role, and I never really saw him mangle any plays at 2B.

I don't think he would have batted .400 or anything, but at least he would have been an option, and he could have had a breakout year for all we know. Instead he retires with 50 career ABs.

Neifi
And three Womacks make one Vizcaino. What's your point? Let's not get carried away, here. Neifi(!) has been, unequivocally, a terrible hitter his entire career, and he still sucks. He had a "torrid" April and a pretty good August last season, yet ended up a with a sub-700 OPS. In fact, Neifi(!) is exactly the type of player that should absolutely be jettisoned in favor of a younger player. Perez's only redeeming value is that he can play above average defense at two positions and passable defense at 3B, and if he is never allowed to hit he can be a useful player. However, calling Neifi a "solid" utility player is akin to calling Calvin Murray a "solid" fourth outfielder and does a disservice to the truly solid utility players like Brandon Inge, Robert Fick, Ryan Freel, and Jose Oquendo. Sure, Neifi doesn't embarrass himself in the field, but his utter inability to hit is a huge count against him, and it's an absolute crime that he starts when there hasn't been a catostrophic injury situation.

Thank God.....
Ransom, Neifi and Dallimore are all gone.  Hopefuly, when Durham has his yearly muscle pull, Kevin Frandsen will take his position and never let go.

Re: Dallimore Retires
Thanks for the effort and perseverance, even though the Giants didn't reward them very well.  I was at the game when he hit the Grand Slam and was excited for him.  Being an older utility infielder with "limited" skills does not bode well - although of any team you would think the Giants would give him more of a play.

Re: Dallimore Retires
Sorry to hear that he's retiring.  I'm damn jealous of the guy.  I'd love to be able to say I hit a grand slam in my first major league at-bat....

GS in 1st AB?
Dallimore's Grand Slam came in his 2nd AB and 3rd PA.  The day before the Grand Slam Dallimore made a pinch-hitting appearance, grounding out to shortstop in a 7th inning pinch hitting appearance.  (I was at that game.)  The next day he had a walk in the 1st inning before hitting his Grand Slam in the 2nd inning.

Re: Dallimore Retires
A tip of the hat to Brian -- that grand slam was the best moment in perhaps the best Giants game that year. I'd prefer that as my major-league legacy than Calvin Murray's horribly uneventful 600 at-bats.
