Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
As always, post news here please.
A thought: How about having a prospect by prospect [say, one per day] of the top 30-50 Giants prospects? Anybody think this is a good idea, or just overkill? I need something to fill the time until BA comes out with their Top 10 and handbook. Sickels list and discussion didn't do it for me.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
One baseball official said the commissioner's office would vigorously investigate the matter if it received a complaint, but added that no complaint has been forthcoming.
"We haven't reached a decision yet," Los Angeles Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said by telephone yesterday.
Red Sox GM Theo Epstein denied tampering with Drew, whom he tried unsuccessfully to sign two years ago and then signed earlier this week to a five-year, $70 million contract.
That made me giddy and I was hoping someone would have the non-league news thread up for me to post this. I hate the Dodgers like every self-respecting Giants fan does but I hate the Red Sox almost as much. Sometimes my hatred for them surpasses my Dodger loathing.
There's also a tidbit on more Mando to Florida talk, Mando saying he would love to return to FLA. It's a good day all around.

During the off-season I help with special projects such as our Top 50 prospect bonanza and I write up breaking news reports. I helped write up the draft notebooks for both days in June and worked with Brute and our other editor in a war-room type setup where we had rapid fire information coming at us. Looking up guys on Google, contacting college athletic departments to get in touch with draftees from the higher rounds, writing quick blurbs on our new guys, it was crazy but really fun.
I did playoff coverage for the Cal League and Northwest League Playoffs this season. I couldn't get to San Jose Muni for any postseason games but I stayed connected through the web radio broadcasts of the games, and I relied on MiLB.com for news about the SK Volcanoes.
Sometimes I go to minor league games to observe and write special pieces. Nick Pereira was our big guy last year on the site; I did an interview with him at San Jose and did a follow-up piece on him after he was promoted to Fresno. Just missed the chance to speak to him at the AAA game, but it was my first visit to the press box at a professional game so it was all good to me. :)
I have more freedom to write during the summer and winter breaks when I am not in school. The editors and I have an understanding and we work very well together. They've been awesome to me so I try to be awesome to them.
It's just so great to be doing this because I love it, and I'm good at it. It's great preparation for writing professionally and I will put this on my resume when I'm finished with college. It's win-win, baby.

Pitchers ranked ahead of him [faults/concerns]
Bailey [third pitch, attitude]
Hughes [health, changeup]
Gallardo [velocity]
Elbert [command, probably 3rd pitch]
Pelfrey [breaking ball]
Adam Miller [health]
Andrew Miller [command, third pitch]
Adenhart [already had TJ, velocity]
Garza [fatigue, consistency of secondary pitches]
It seems Hughes, Gallardo, Adenhart, and Garza are consistently a tick below Tim the Enchanter in velocity, but the other guys can match Tim in mph. Pelfrey is probably the only guy without a breaking ball that rivals Tim's - but he probably has the best fastball [mph+movement] of the whole bunch.
I think I would put Tim ahead of Pelrey, Adenhart [TJ at 18 scares me], and Elbert. Maaaaaybe Hughes, whose stuff I am not as sold on as most reports. I wasn't overly impressed with him in the futures game. Otherwise, I think I would keep the order.
I think comparing pitchers to hitters is fairly problematic, but I wouldn't have Chris Young, Andy Laroche, or Jose Tabata that high.
I think Sanchez deserved a top 50 spot. Maybe #50

Toronto may shop Wells
The Toronto Blue Jays may put All-Star center fielder Vernon Wells, who will be a free agent next offseason, on the trade market in January. Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said that will be the plan if they can't sign him to a long-term contract extension.
"If we can't sign him, we have to explore trading him, plain and simple" Ricciardi said. "We should know by the first of the year."
Another Wells interested in SF
Starter David Wells, who announced his retirement after last season, definitely plans to pitch again in 2007, according to agent Gregg Clifton. Wells' top two choices are the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres, Clifton said.

Piazza to A's Dotel to Royals
Royals signed RHP Octavio Dotel, who had been with the Yankees, to a one-year, $5 million contract.
Cardinals signed RHP Russ Springer, who had been with the Astros, to a one-year, $1.75 million contract

Grab Riske now, Sabean. The Springer deal might be all it takes, but offer him $2M a year for two years just to be safe.
