Re: RIP Jose Uribe
Oh man.  That is horrible.  Jose Uribe was the shortstop of my teenaged years, or thereabouts.

Much too young.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
Same for me.  I was at plenty of games chanting oooo-rebay! myself.  But the chant was never better than during the '87 NLCS.  Even while watching on TV I got chills hearing the packed house at the Stick chant his name.

RIP Jose.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
That is horrible.  He was one of my favorite Giants ever, and that is not hyperbole.

I loved watching Jose, Robby and Will turn double-plays behind Rick Reuschel.  And the "Oooo!  Reebay!" chant was the best ever.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
Some of my brother's friends got that chant going in the cafeteria at college their freshman year. He still has no idea why it started, but it still sounds awesome. That is sad news. He was an amazing shortstop, and much too young.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
Agree on all points. Him and Robbie could really turn them. I remember going to my first Giants games as a kid and just screaming as loud as I could with my dad, "OOOO" "ReeBAY!". That was one of my favorite parts of going to a game.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
I will always remember that year he hit like .290 out of nowhere.  And that was back when .290 still meant something.

Thanks for the memories, we'll miss you.

ReeBay!
I remember going to a Giants/Dodgers game in LA and the handful of Giants fans in attendance beginning the chant.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
I am sad, very, very sad.  This is just such sad news for those of us who were kids when he was at SS.  Slappy, scrappy and a hard nosed ballplayer and magic at SS.  Robby Thompson and Jose Uribe turning two obviously inspired my screen name here and they inspired me as a kid to love the Giants.  The chant will live on as one of the best ever to reverberate through the Stick.  As many others have already said, via con Dios mi amigo.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
one day at the Stick he cleared the bases with a double and the opposing team made a pitching change. the packed house starting the "ooooo-rebaaaaay" chant and it was going on for over a minute while the new pitcher warmed up. Jose was standing on 2nd base with his hands on his hips, with no expression. as the chant grew louder and longer, Uribe finally took his helmet off and tipped it to every corner of the park. the Stick erupted. goose pimples. RIP Uribe.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
Sad, too, that his wife died about 10 years ago.  I know he has at least one child (I heard this morning that he has three), and they are now orphans.

I emailed the Giants to see if thye have any suggestions or address for fans to make charitable donations, send condolences, etc.  I'll post that info if and when I get it.

He is survived by his 2nd wife. I believe he has a total of 14 children.

The fact his first wife had died tragically as well was the first thing I thought of when I heard he had died. I really enjoyed watching him play, and, he seemed like a great guy as well.

My grandmother used to work in special tickets at the stick.  She was in charge of giving tickets to players families, etc, so I was around the giants alot as a real little kid (mid 80's). He was one of my fav's. RIP Jose.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
Lots of memories and nostalgia for me today.

I'm thinking of the TV ad for kids "Glove Day", where Robby said "All kids 14 and under will receive a free kid-sized baseball glove" and Jose is in the background trying the kids' glove on, saying "But it is full-size for me."

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
Hah!  That was awesome.  I actually went to Glove Day, too, and received one of the totally useless plastic gloves.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
Met him at a card show in '89 and actually got to have lunch with him and his girlfriend/wife (because nobody knew who he was - no posse).

Class act. One of my faves, probably because I didn't know what OPS back then.

Sonny had five fingers, but he only used three.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
I just read the news.  And with this discussion, all the memories come flooding back.

When I was a kid, I wanted to play SS for the Giants just like Uribe.  I even tried to throw off my wrong foot just like him.  It never worked.

I remember one time he hit a game winning HR (I think it was a walk-off) and they had to have him on the post-game show, but his grasp of English was not the best.  It was the first time I ever heard a Latin player interviewed.  He was kind and gracious.

My user name here is named for him, and I will always remember him this way: "Ground ball in the hole at short.  Uribe has it, to Thompson, to Clark!  Double play!"

RIP OO-Reebay

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
What sad, shocking news, from a man with tradgedy in his past. Losing your wife in childbirth has got to be one of life's biggest heartbreaks. Uribe lived and played on, and now this senseless and untimely accident. Poor Uribe.

I can still see that unique throwing style
straight back, side arm, sling it to first with almost uncanny accuracy.  Great player.

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
Very sad. I took my daughter to her first game as an infant in 1986, and that was the team she first knew as the Giants. She learned to talk saying, along with the usual "momma" and "daddy," the phrases "Humm-baby" and the chant "OOOOO - Reebay." Jose will always have a special place in my memories because of my daughter's cheers and his wonderful glove. RIP Jose.

Condolences.  Wasn't Jose the preverbial player to be named later because he changed his name after we acquired him?

Re: RIP Jose Uribe
That was Giants 3B coach Rocky Bridges' famous line: "He was definitely the player to be named later."

Bridges also gets credit for, "Well, two out of three ain't bad", when commenting on the '85 Giants' slogan, "Real Grass. Real Sunshine. Real Baseball".
