J.T. Snow Retires

Everyone knew he wasn't going to play again; he was the last to figure it out, sadly.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/12/07/sports/s105859S81.DTL

Congratulations to J.T. Snow for a good and memorable career.  You had one of the best gloves I've ever seen on a first basemen.  You saved Darren Baker.  You fell on your ass, got up, and still made the catch.  You brought a whole city to life with that playoff homer against the Mets in 2000.  And you looked good doing it all, damn you.

Farewell and welcome back, J.T.  We all look forward to hearing you replace Greg Papa (please!) on the radio this summer.

Welcome Home JT
Enjoy it when a quality former Giant returns to the organization. Look forward to seeing the results of JT working with Aurilia, EME and others to improve their fielding.

Re: J.T. Snow Retires
JT's most impressive accomplishment might be that he was one of the worst hitting 1B in baseball for almost 5 years, yet he had the majority of Giants fans clamoring to keep bringing him back.

Proving that if you're a 'gamer' and get a few clutch hits, fans will always overlook your shortcomings. A lesson for Frandsen.

Re: J.T. Snow Retires
Funny, your "almost 5 years" comment got me wondering about how bad his decline was. As it turns out, if you look at him in five-year blocks, his numbers smooth out rather nicely...

'97-'01: .285 EqA, .269/.366/.452/.818
'98-'02: .275 EqA, .262/.357/.421/.778
'99-'03: .278 EqA, .267/.367/.420/.787
'00-'04: .285 EqA, .276/.377/.431/.808
'01-'05: .279 EqA, .273/.374/.409/.782

Below average for a first baseman, particularly in terms of power, but that .374 OBP at the end of his career gave him value. He was overpaid during some of his bad years, particularly in 2002, although he made up for it to some extent with a .333/.371/.515/.887 line in 66 postseason at-bats that year, and by putting up a .325 EqA after signing a cheap deal in 2004.

You're probably right about Frandsen, although if he consistently puts up an OBP like Snow's, gathers some Gold Gloves, and has 32 postseason hits for the Giants, I'll like him with or without the eye black.

Re: J.T. Snow Retires
The 01-05 numbers are skewed by the crazy  346 ABs he had in 04. Looking at those years individually is pretty wretched, especially the slugging, where he posted:

01 - .379
02 - .360
03 - .418
04 - .529
05 - .365

I can't think of many 1B that keep their jobs and fan support with those kind of numbers. More credit to him.

Re: J.T. Snow Retires
Yeah, judging solely by slugging percentage he was a bad player, and a wretched first baseman. Thankfully there was more to his game than that.

Re: J.T. Snow Retires
I did love JT as a silly impressionable teenage girl. I was actually an Angels fan for a time. I was born in Anaheim and moved up here with my family when I was still a baby. My parents told me we went to games at the Big A and everything. Before the team went through that whole awful red uniform ordeal and had an identity crisis, I considered them my second team behind the Giants. JT was my favorite player then and I was thrilled when he was traded here.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Re: J.T. Snow Retires
I stole the name from a production of Grant Theatre thus the name stays as it was created, to represent the awesomeness of Grant's humor. It's also more convienient to let people believe I am male until proven otherwise. I don't run the risk of having my sports opinions and interjections discredited just because I'm a girl. I also like bowling people over when they realize I have breasts and ovaries and I know my shit about sports. :)

Just don't propose on the Jumbotron. That is so lame. I'd like to see the woman say no just once.

However when I saw Alan propose to Gary on the Jumbotron last season it was cute and sweet. I don't know why it's different.

No sweat and no offense taken.  I was reading the post and wondering whether anyone remembered that that's how I proposed.  (Leave it to E-me to rub your nose in it.)

I'd admit it's probably kinda on the lame side, but her surprise/delight and the the whole section cheering for us made it a pretty cool event.

Now then, if I remember correctly, your boobs were the subject at hand (so to speak.)

Re: J.T. Snow Retires
Loved the eye-black. Loved the leather. J.T. provided some of the most memorable Giants moments in the past decade. Certainly one trade that worked in the Giants favor. (Alan Watson, anyone?) Sabean was not always an idoit.

Re: J.T. Snow Retires
I was hoping and hoping it wouldn't come. I know that's stupid but he's my favorite player. He was the one who got me to love baseball with just one play at first. Anything will impress a 7 yr old and JT diving to his left did just that. I guess the memories will have to suffice. And at least I get to hear his voice ever so often on the radio. Good luck JT!!

Re: J.T. Snow Retires
JT was awesome. The one jersey with a name I've owned has been a "Snow" jersey. People made fun of me for wearing it and not being a 13 year old girl, but so be it.

I was also at the playoff homerun game, and it remains the single greatest sporting moment I've witnessed live. The fact that we lost that game breaks my heart, but it was still awesome.

Even in his decline phase JT could pick it with the glove, take his walks, and rap out a double now and then. I used to call him the "King of the warning track flyball," since he hit so many almost home-runs.

And we'll never forget the Snow Pack.

My VORP is higher than your VORP.
