Rumors....

The Giants are one of the teams pursuing Eric Gagne.

The Chronicle reports the Giants are looking at David Riske, Doug Brocail, and Russ Ortiz

The Cardinals are the myster suitor for Bonds...maybe.

Eleizer Alfonzo for Philip Hughes? How about if we throw in Hennessey? The Yankees are rumored to have interest in Notgardo. (Note: Hughes's name is absolutely nowhere in the article...but I'll take Colter Bean as a fair trade for a backup catcher.)

Make that a seventh-inning stretch attraction complete with betting on the winner and I think we have ourselves quite the sideshow. I've always been an advocate of closer death matches. I once proposed an idea of making a player in a slump fight the mascot of their team to redeem himself. And I'm not talking Lou Seal; I mean a Giant in a slump fights one of those huge UFC guys. A real giant. If he survives, he stays in the lineup. If not, problem solved!

I get the feeling that Russ Ortiz would be a bad idea.

And in an attempt to turn this thread into another Richie Sexson discussion, this was noted in the linked NYPost article:

"In other developments, the Mariners gauged the Yankees' interest in first baseman Richie Sexson. To make the deal work - Sexson has $28 million for the next two seasons - the Yankees told the Mariners they would have to take the $22.95 million and two years remaining on Carl Pavano's deal. Seattle politely declined."

The Mariners really seem intent on shedding Sexson's salary.

let them shed it over here. I heard the Mariners are looking to trade for Erik Hinske, so they might already have decided that Sexson or Beltre is out of there. As for Gagne, that makes for a great revenge signing for the Giants. Even if Gagne does nothing, the sight of him in black and orange will make Dodger fans retch just like I will when I see Schmidt in the Dodger uniform. And for the guy who doesn't know Riske, he's definitely the more desirable name on that Ortiz-Brocail-Riske list.

Riske has always been an under-the-radar reliever for some reason.

Justin Speier (33 years old): 4.02 career ERA, 7.76 K/9, opponents have hit .237/.308/.416/.722 against him in 517 IP.

David Riske (30 years old): 3.59 career ERA, 8.62 K/9, opponents have hit .229/.314/.392/.703 against him in 361.1 IP.

Riske, like most relievers, has had some up and down years. He was wild in 2004 and injured in 2006. But his numbers in 2003 (.196/.260/.336/.592) and 2005 (.208/.260/.374/.631) were simply remarkable.

Batista is still out there I think, too.  Hillenbrand, could play 3B for Dodgers.

Pass on Gagme.  If the Dodgers, who passes on him above $4M and know his complete health history, then why should anyone else think that he can be worth more?  And if he gets a lesser off elsewhere, maybe he just goes back to Dodgers and takes the $4M deal.

LuGo
I don't understand why certain players get tarred so heavily with the "Alleged Steroids" tag (BB, obviously, but also R Palmiero, now McGuire), some seem to get a little of a hit (Bagwell, Rocket, Giambi), while others seem to be getting a free pass (Slammin Sammy, Migueal Tejada, Brett Boone).

Luis Gonzalez von Snake is near the top of my list of, "Why isn't everyone booing him and demanding that he retire, the way they do with Barry?"  I mean, he fits the profile perfectly - mediocre, barely-hanging-on-to-a-starting-job guy with a career high of 15 HR all of a sudden starts poppin 'em like crazy just as he enters his thirties, and just as the era of rampant steroids dawns in 1998.  His 57 jacks at age 33 seem especially suspicious.  When the investigation is complete, and all the names are named, LG is near the top of the list of players I expect to be fingered.

Re: LuGo
I'm not much of a Gonzalez fan, but I don't buy the theory that a ridiculous offensive season has to be caused by steroids. There have always been outliers on the back of most baseball cards. If steroids caused Brady Anderson, Rich Aurilia and Luis Gonzalez to have those remarkable years out of the blue, don't you think at least one of them would have kept on juicing (and, by this logic, kept on having remarkable years), health effects be damned?

Given the diverse positions, skill levels and body types of the people who have actually tested positive (Alex Sanchez? Ryan Franklin?), in my mind Gonzalez has about the same chance of being a user as any other player of his era, including a few players who will be entering the Hall of Fame this summer (Ripken and Gwynn). 30%?

Perfectly put.

And, my hunch about LuGo is not just based on his one monster season.  It's more based on :

Age 22-30 : .274 EQA in 4372 PAs
Age 31-37 : .306 EQA in 4578 PAs

(keeping in mind that EQA adjusts for park effects and yearly league averages)

Regarding his age 31-37, as people keep saying about Barry : "Those are the years guys are supposed to be getting worse!"

I HATE
Eric Gagne.  I don't want to see him in a Giants uniform.  Just like I have always hated Steve Finley.  They are The Enemy.

And just like I really didn't like watching Richie bat against us or Russ Ortiz pitch against us.  And won't like watching Schmidt pitch agaisnt us.

Sometimes I don't understand rapid roster turnover.  Was there any particular reason why we couldn't have held on to Kenny Lofton, Reggie Sanders, and Jose Cruz, instead of replacing them with the Marquis du Hacket and Micheal Tucker?  Randy Winn notwithstanding, any particular reason why we couldn't have had Yorvit Torrealba trying his hand at 300 PAs instead of Notgardo?

Snow and Woody's extended tenures notwithstanding, I think that GMs sometimes underestimate loyalties to particular players.

by SnowLeopard on Dec 7, 2006 4:28 PM PST reply actions

Re: I HATE
To be fair, Jose Cruz Jr hasn't repeated the success he had with the Giants since he left.  Torrealba isn't very good.  I think the Giants were right to see Lofton as an expensive declining player, and they couldn't have known he would have the excellent season he had the next year.  Russ Ortiz is horrible.

But letting Reggie Sanders go was a mistake.  They really underestimated his total value - especially on defense.

Torrealba's no worse than Notgardo - 4.00 RC/27 and .244 EQA in 1041 MLB PAs with excellent D vs. 4.50/.256 in 309 with passible D.

The big key for me in Yorvit's favor is continuity.  Following and keeping interested in an ongoing narative, you know?

As for the outfielders, I don't see a big drop off with any of the guys below (quite the oposite), or a restrospectively obvious big important reason for letting them go.  Anything Michael Tucker did for us that any of them couldn't have done just as well?

Re: Rumors....
I don't even see a little bit of upside to signing Gagne, especially for anything worth more than a million with incentives, but especially for anything worth anything, anything, anything, anything at all.

Why, why does anybody think it would be a good idea. Hell, you can catch lightning in a bottle with anybody. I'd rather do it with somebody who has actually played in the last two years and who has played more than three full seasons in his eight year career.

Seriously, here's the deal. Gagne only started pitching once he got in the Dodgers organization. So you know, only for about ten years or so. So his arm didn't even start out with the wear and tear of a high school/college pitcher. It was fresh. So with a fresh arm he manages to play three great years with such bad mechanics that he blows that nice fresh arm up two times in two years. The guy is not just an injury risk, he's barely a viable health option. He's older than ever, hasn't pitched in longer than ever, is looking for $4 freaking million base pay, and represents everything short of Tommy Lasorda that I hate in the world.

Really, Armando Benitez is going to be healthier and pitch better than Gagne ever will again. I'll put four bucks down on that (so somebody can go over a bridge once in 2007).

No on Gagne. Revenge signings are the worst things you can do. They screw up your roster with players you were too busy scooping up and laughing to actually evaluate. Let's get a grip on this thing. We don't want him.

Not in the Cards?
Barry Bonds is intrigued with playing under the St. Louis arch, but the money is pointing him someplace else. And Bonds isn't known for leaving cash on the table.

The Giants made healthy progress in negotiations with Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, during a three-hour session Wednesday afternoon and follow-up conference call, two sources close to the process said.

Several major issues remain unresolved, including the vesting language for a potential option year. But it's believed the Giants have made a one-year offer for at least $10 million, which would far exceed anything Bonds would receive elsewhere.

The Giants are prepared to move ahead with or without Bonds in the next few days, a source said. Club officials believe something can be worked out, but they are not confident Bonds will be back in the fold.

Re: Gagne
I'll grant that Gagne is a huge risk.  He hasn't pitched in awhile, he's dealing with several apparently unrelated arm issues, and what little we did see of him last year indicates that he might be down 5-8 mph in velocity.  So I concur that we should be looking only at a one-year deal with a very low base.

However, I'd like to step in on the "i hate gagne and i'd rather die than see him in orange and black" issue.  Really?  Does Eric Gagne really represent "The Dodgers" to you?  What other Dodgers can you name that are at all like Eric Gagne?  To me, Eric Gagne was (dare i say "is?") a badass who played (plays?) with a lot of emotion, pride, and heart.  Bonds himself said that Gagne was the best one-inning guy ever, and Barry isn't one to give out compliments freely.  Two definitive Gagne moments:

  1. In a 3-0 game (another dominant Odalis Perez performance, as I recall--what was that guy's DEAL against us?), Gagne threw Bonds nothing but fastballs for an entire at-bat.  After Bonds yanked a pitch measuring at 102 mph FOUL, he clubbed a shot into the left-center bleachers.  Gagne's comment afterwards?  "That's probably about as much fun as I've ever had playing baseball."
  2. In one of those late-afternoon games where the glare off the hitter's backdrop at PacB-C-and-T is merciless, Gagne goosed a fastball way up and out of the zone (but not particularly in) to Michael Tucker.  After spinning himself into the ground, Tucker got up and started posturing for a fight, jabbering at Gagne.  Gagne flipped off his glove and just started walking towards Tucker, calmly but confident that Tucker wanted no piece of him.  Now I'll grant you; Michael Tucker was one of my least favorite Giants of the past ten years, and that may be coloring my reactions to this exchange.  But I've always felt like Gagne was a real throwback-type player, a badass who could back it up.  In his prime, he was one of the most lights-out pitchers I've ever seen.  Yes, he played for the Dodgers; but to me, he was a great player that I hated because he was so good and because he always stuck it to us.  He was good enough that he transcended being a Dodger.  Red Sox fans have come to appreciate and respect Derek Jeter, even though they hate the Yankees.  I guess that's how I feel about Gagne.  I was bred to hate the Dodgers, and I always will; but I'm a baseball fan and that means recognizing great players like Gagne (and terrible players like Tucker).  If it's a short, cheap deal, I'd love to have him on-board.  At least he'd bring a little attitude to our 'pen.  Remember that we're not that removed  from Matt Herges hesitating to come out in the 9th to "Tom Sawyer" because he worried that the lyrics might offend somebody.

Me too. I was rooting hard for him in the playoffs. Not for the Mets neccessarily, just him.

Yes.

I suppose, if I think about it, I realize that I hate Tommy Lasorda and Steve Garvey more.

I agree..
Gagne was the Dodgers for a few years really.

Re: Gagne
See, the thing is that I'm not very old and I was a late bloomer to begin with, and rivalries can be difficult to get passionate about when you've only been a fan during a down period. Gagne was the first player on that team who I recognized who really just killed me to watch he was beating us so hard, was getting those fans excited past the point of my tolerance, was wearing those irritating sports glasses, and was setting records while doing it.

He's the guy who I can point to and say, "Yeah, it was when Eric Gagne was playing that I REALLY started to hate the Dodgers."

So that's why. I think it's more than reasonable. Just chalk it up to my age/slow fandom development.

When I think of Gagne...
...I think of stupid LA fans wearing the stupid fake goatees. So yeah, he represents the Dodgers to me.

The official site is saying that Bonds has signed for 1 year - $16 million!

Great Move
The Giants have definitely gotten "younger and healthier" this offseason! I mean, only five players on the upcoming roster get Social Security.

Re: Great Move
Yeah, it's too bad.  I mean, Sabean could have signed Juan Pierre instead of Bonds!  Good luck with that!

Re: Rumors....
How about this scenario? Sabean gives $100 million to Zito over six years, trades Lowry, Benitez, and some lower-level prospects for Sexson and Putz (picking up much of Benitez's salary), and signs David Wells to a cheap one-year contract. The Giants also invite Russ Ortiz and pretty much anyone who wants a shot to spring training in case someone decides this is do-or-die year and drops 20 pounds or otherwise regains form.

Realistic? Except for basically trading Benitez for Putz, probably yes, but maybe we could find a way to get him anyway. The best deal financially? Probably not for Zito, but we'd be competitive this year, and if not, we'd still have many veterans with short-term deals who could be traded mid-season if needed. Here's what it would look like:

  1. Roberts CF
  2. Vizquel SS
  3. Durham 2B
  4. Bonds LF
  5. Sexson 1B
  6. Aurilia 3B
  7. Winn RF
  8. Molina C
Rotation: Zito, Cain, Morris, Wells, Sanchez. Hennessy and Correia serve in long relief or as extra starters when needed. Putz would close. There are still gaps, but it could be worse. If you don't want to spend the money on Zito, I still think Wells would be a (potentially) good signing, and really, signing some re-treads and being clear about getting in shape has the potential to work. People often don't change until they need to, and if it's a question of losing 20 pounds and working hard in the off-season or retirement, it could work...

Re: Rumors....
It's good thinking, but I don't see Putz being moved.  The M's just traded Rafael Soriano, their other viable closing option, and I don't think they'd want to put everything on Benitez's shoulders now that they've gouged out their late-inning depth.  Of course, Bavasi DID deal Soriano for Horacio Ramirez, who is essentially a garbage bag that happens to throw lefty, so maybe he'd be willing to make the move.

I'm not so high on signing Zito, though.  His peripherals have been slipping quite a bit and, much as I enjoy watching him, I don't think signing any pitcher to more than a three- or four-year deal makes any sense.  I'd rather save the money.

By the way, there's talk that Abreu is available.  Could we put together a deal that would send Feliz, Eliezer, Lowry, and Benitez to the Yanks?  Maybe throw in Sanchez?  The Yanks have expressed interest in Notgardo, need some sock at first (maybe other people don't realize how awful Feliz is?  The Yanks are desperate enough to try Josh Phelps, after all), and were in the running for Ted Lilly, who's basically Noah Lowry's very rich uncle.  With the inconsistency of Farnsworth et al (when your second-best reliever is Scott Proctor, you have some issues to resolve), perhaps they'd be interested in seeing what Armando can do for them?

I got so excited I lost track of reality...

I attended my first Giants games in 1987 and will never forget how Candlestick fans used to chant"Ooh!  Ribe!" at each other from opposite sides of the park.  So a fond farewell to Jose Gonzalez/Uribe Gonzalez/Jose Uribe.

As a teenager I heard "about me and the girl next door" as something along the lines of "what me and the girl explore."

Your lyric makes more sense, and I'll be forwarding some Ready For The World lyrics for you to transcribe within the hour.

Re: Rumors....
have we forgot the real reason we dumped Russ Ortiz to begin with...in the giants move towards washed up aged pitchers, Ortiz's youth and talent, at the time, was not the direction we wanted to go...but now he fits the mold...and while we are at it, how about Shawn Estes and in a couple of years, when his arm is hanging by a thread, welcome back livan...i also hear Terry Mulholland is free...
