Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07

Freddy Garcia is traded for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez. Gonzalez was part of the Thome deal.

Gil Meche 4-45 from KC. Mr Moore in KC may not have learned much during his stint in Atlanta. Or the owner made him do it.

Jeff Suppan is weeping tears of joy.

Jim Hendry had angioplasty - lack of blood to the brain may explain the Lily contract.

Pseudo Giants news: Rotoworld is reporting that the Giants are interested in both Gagne and Mulder.

I am intrigued by both.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
Meche for 4-45? Oh please, Irwin, a bargain like that is so December 6th. Try 5-55, or maybe 5-60.

Oh my, and you're right about Suppan, although it looks like some other team will foot the bill. In case some of you may have missed this perfectly reasonable paragraph from the Mercury News yesterday:

"Sabean held a meeting with the agent for Jeff Suppan, but a club source said the Giants don't believe the right-hander will be worth the price. They are looking for a top-of-the-rotation presence and grade Suppan's stuff below that of Matt Morris."

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
ooops, espn has 5/45

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2689724

Any incarnation of that is idiocy - Meche is way, way too injury prone. [not that you were condoning it]

That is any encouraging

I think Zito's deal will be the worst of the offseason, if it is for more than 3 years. I see him falling off a cliff in two years.

The Dodgers are evil.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
MLB says 5 years, $55 million.

11 million a year for a guy who has never had a good season. Wow.

The Mets and A's are rumored to be talking trade with Rich Harden, Dan Haren, and Joe Blanton as names popping up.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
I read on ESPN somewhere last night that the Mets ARE interested in an A's starting pitcher, but it's not Rich Harden.  Apparently the A's really want Milledge, and the Mets are dangling him for a starter.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
The As would be fools to trade Harden.  Injuries notwithstanding he looks like he will be competing with Johan for Cy Youngs for years to come.  Unbelievable stuff.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
If Harden can stay healthy...and that's a big if.  I can see how Beane might be tempted to get something good for him.

I agree
it may be time to trade the guy.  I have my doubts that he will ever be consistently healthy.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
One report said a Harden trade was BS and that the source was mixing up Harden with Haren. Hm.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/07
Apparently the Mets want Haren.  The A's should be able to get Milledge, Heilman, and more (how much more, I don't know) for Haren.  Haren would still be under the org's control for 4 years, so that should bring a lot of talent back.

Vernon Wells
It sounds like the Dodgers are pusuing him via trade from the Blue Jays. They definitely have the youngsters get him (something short of what they offered for Manny) and probably the money to re-sign him. If they are able to pull that one off, I will be absolutely sick and suicidal.
We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

that would be really, really, really bad for the giants.

Don't do it Vernon
I remember the bleacher creatures giving it to Wells during the series the BJs played in SF...what's the matter with Vernon? He's a bum. If this goes down, he would really get it.

Sad, because I really like him. Not only is he a good ballplayer but he's well-spoken and intelligent. It would just really suck to have him in Dodger blue because I'd have to loathe him with every fiber of my being.

Mr Wells comes to SF
wouldn't that be nice.  After watching him on Baseball Tonight during playoffs for all of five seconds I knew I wanted Wells in The City manning CF for years to come. He is exactly as you describe and with the talent to win an MVP award. SF would be very fortunate.

Re: Don't do it Vernon
Vernon Wells- gold glove CF, can anchor a line-up, and enough charisma to be "face of a franchise." If the Jays were planning on letting Wells go, they should not have let Catolanotto walk...
