Re: Molina In The House
Giants signed catcher Bengie Molina, who had been with the Blue Jays, to a three-year, $16 million contract.
Well, Molina did out-OPS Eliezer Alfonso 785 to 767 last season. Surely that's worth $16 million. No, Alfonzo probably isn't that good, but neither is Molina, a career .275/.310/.407 hitter. At age 32, he entering the territory at which catchers tend to collapse offensively, and his decline on defense has been rapid and could continue. Throw in that there was no indication that Molina had even a substantial one-year offer from any other team and this is another one of the worst signings of the offseason. Dec. 6 - 6:03 pm et
Definitely not too thrilled with this one.
Anyone know roughly how much money is left that we have for next years payroll?

Compliments about Bengie
"He's one of the brightest and most intelligent players I've ever been around," said Mike Scioscia, who managed Molina for six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels.
Scioscia, a former catcher, said Molina's game-calling skills should trump other negatives.
"His ability to stay with a game plan and understand pitching is what's going to win ballgames for you, and he's as good as there is," Scioscia said. "You can look at a lot of those peripheral things, but when you get to the bottom line, he knows how to win back there."

Regarding Moilna, he sounds ok with one exception: blaming the pitchers for not delivering the ball quickly smacks of "I did my job." He could have said that in a much better way. Something like, "Catching base-stealers is a team effort, so singling out that stat as a sign that my defense is slipping isn't entirely fair." would have made the same point. Oh well, he's a baseball player, not a PR guy.
