Re: Molina In The House
It's a good excuse for champagne.  Well, any excuse is a good excuse to break out champagne.

Want my champagne in October
Welcome Bengie. Report to Arizona early and lets get the pitching staff pitching better than expectations. When with Angels he got many a clutch hits.

Hope Mike Matheny is doing well.

Re: Molina In The House
We do get all three Catching Molina Brothers for the price of one, don't we?  I'm pretty sure they come as a package deal.

I'll be here all week.

No need for backtracking - "with the best of them" clearly excludes Mr. McPenisButter.

Re: Molina In The House
From Rotoworld...

Giants signed catcher Bengie Molina, who had been with the Blue Jays, to a three-year, $16 million contract.
Well, Molina did out-OPS Eliezer Alfonso 785 to 767 last season. Surely that's worth $16 million. No, Alfonzo probably isn't that good, but neither is Molina, a career .275/.310/.407 hitter. At age 32, he entering the territory at which catchers tend to collapse offensively, and his decline on defense has been rapid and could continue. Throw in that there was no indication that Molina had even a substantial one-year offer from any other team and this is another one of the worst signings of the offseason. Dec. 6 - 6:03 pm et

Definitely not too thrilled with this one.

Anyone know roughly how much money is left that we have for next years payroll?

Re: Molina In The House
They appear to be running short of options to replace Bonds' offensive production in left field, but have other ways of exerting influence on Bonds' negotiating team. One way is their negotiations to sign pitcher Barry Zito, who would exhaust the majority of the $20 million they have to spend on a payroll expected to be about $85 million on opening day.

Re: Molina In The House
Ugh.  $16 million.  He is not worth $5 million/yr more than a back-up.  No way.  Bad investment.

Compliments about Bengie
But Sabean wanted the shrewdest possible mind to take over for Mike Matheny, who isn't expected to play again because of post-concussion syndrome. Molina earns rave reviews in that area.

"He's one of the brightest and most intelligent players I've ever been around," said Mike Scioscia, who managed Molina for six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels.

Scioscia, a former catcher, said Molina's game-calling skills should trump other negatives.

"His ability to stay with a game plan and understand pitching is what's going to win ballgames for you, and he's as good as there is," Scioscia said. "You can look at a lot of those peripheral things, but when you get to the bottom line, he knows how to win back there."

Re: Compliments about Bengie
Oooh, hooray, his greatest asset is an ability that it has been proven catchers do not actually possess.  Does he "make the hitters around him better" and "just win ballgames" too. * UBERROLLEYES *

Re: Compliments about Bengie
SF Chron had a similar piece.  Contrasting Molina's ability to call a good game is something I've been hearing whispered in multiple places; Notgardo was an a-hole who the pitchers hated having catch for him.  Apparently, he thought he knew more than the pitchers.  (I'm also guessing the the passed balls didn't help.)

Regarding Moilna, he sounds ok with one exception: blaming the pitchers for not delivering the ball quickly smacks of "I did my job."  He could have said that in a much better way. Something like, "Catching base-stealers is a team effort, so singling out that stat as a sign that my defense is slipping isn't entirely fair." would have made the same point.  Oh well, he's a baseball player, not a PR guy.

Re: Compliments about Bengie
I wonder, if Sosa thinks he's so great, why didn't the Angels keep him?
