I would have been thrilled with Maddux at 2/18, but I think I'm in the minority.

He's not AS effective..
When he's not pitching agains the 2006 Giants who swing at every pitch.
I blame F.P. Santangelo, while F.P. somehow blames Kuiper.

Lugo 4/36.

I wouldn't have minded that instead of Duurham + Aurilia. But I wouldn't love it.

Manny seems to be staying put, which kind of surprises me. If the Red Sox really could have had LaRoche and Kemp for him, or LaRoche and Broxton, I don't see how they turned it down.

Mets and Royals swap arms.

According to SI.com, the Mets and Royals have agreed to swap Ambiorix Burgos and Brian Bannister.

Bonds arrives at hotel, source says a deal could be close

Take that for what you will.

A's get Embree, very close on Piazza

I'm also an A's fan and distressed that for the second year in a row they're getting ex-Dodgers that I loathe.

Not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but:

Lilly narrows his choices down to Cubs or Yankees.

Mariners are shopping for a "frontline" starting pitcher.  Apparently Sexson is the bargaining chip?

Link

I hope the Lilly stuff is completely accurate, as that means he won't be "YOUR Ted Lilly".  Count that as not just one, but 4 (or >40M) bullets dodged.

As for Seaatle: could they really hope to get some sort of "frontline" starter out of dealing Sexson?  Perhaps that three-team deal between the Braves/Giants/Mariners isn't that far fetched afterall.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/05-12/6
this is a very strange and lopsided sounding trade, but reports are going around that the M's have sent Soriano to the Braves for Ramirez.

There goes the 3way between Giants/Mariners/Braves
The Pirates have agreed to surrender Mike Gonzalez for Adam LaRoche, but a trade is on hold because the Braves aren't sure Gonzalez is healthy.

This was posted above, but if it is true, the three-team deal rumor is officially shattered.

Re: Non-Giants League News Diary 12/05-12/6
I still think we're going to end up with Sexson, though maybe not till midseason. The Mariners still have too many 1B/DHs and not enough starting pitchers, especially now that they've lost out on Schmidt.

Possible, although replacing the "Benitez for Sexson" dream with the "Lowry for Sexson" dream is a big downgrade.

Yeah, Lowry for Sexson is more like a nightmare. A more pleasant scenario has M's landing Zito or Manny and then needing to dump Sexson to meet their budget.

Of all the big year/big dollar contracts signed, the Drew deal looks like the one least likely to be regretted by the signing team.

A's Sign Piazza, Embry
Piazza, one year $8.5 million.

Embry, two year $5.5 million.

Piazza's a good fit, but Barry would have been a better deal for $13 million.

Wasn't Embry washed up, when the Giants had him?  Ah, to be a lefty relief pitcher.

Eric Gagne rejected an offer from the Dodgers that would have guaranteed him about $4 million with a chance to make about $6 million more in incentives.   WOW!!!!

Re: Sweet Mother of Jesus
That is just crazy.  The guy has barely pitched in two years, and he gets a contract offer way, way better than Frank Thomas got last year.

Let's hope that if he is does return to top Gagne form, he does it for someone outside the NL West.

Gonzo is gone

MLB.com is reporting that the Dodgers and Luis Gonzalez have agreed to terms on a one-year, $7 million contract.

by wilriv21 on Dec 6, 2006 10:50 PM PST reply actions

Re: Gonzo is gone
Good luck replacing JD Drew with that.

Gonzalez hits .271/.352/.444 in the BEST hitter's park in baseball (post-Coors humidifier era).  That translates to somewhere around .255/.330/.430 at Dodger Stadium.  At least his contract is somewhat reasonable, but the Dodgers have probably three minor-leaguers that could outhit that next season.  Apparently Colletti brought his Veteran Savvy altar with him to LA.
