Non-Giants League News Diary 12/05-12/6
Ok, this is late enough to be near pointless. But IT Dept at work. is, well, not great.
JD Drew 5/70 to Bos
San Diego 1/10 for Maddux [if all incentives reached]

I would have been thrilled with Maddux at 2/18, but I think I'm in the minority.

I wouldn't have minded that instead of Duurham + Aurilia. But I wouldn't love it.

Take that for what you will.
A's get Embree, very close on Piazza
I'm also an A's fan and distressed that for the second year in a row they're getting ex-Dodgers that I loathe.

Lilly narrows his choices down to Cubs or Yankees.
Mariners are shopping for a "frontline" starting pitcher. Apparently Sexson is the bargaining chip?
I hope the Lilly stuff is completely accurate, as that means he won't be "YOUR Ted Lilly". Count that as not just one, but 4 (or >40M) bullets dodged.
As for Seaatle: could they really hope to get some sort of "frontline" starter out of dealing Sexson? Perhaps that three-team deal between the Braves/Giants/Mariners isn't that far fetched afterall.

A's Sign Piazza, Embry
Embry, two year $5.5 million.
Piazza's a good fit, but Barry would have been a better deal for $13 million.
Wasn't Embry washed up, when the Giants had him? Ah, to be a lefty relief pitcher.

Let's hope that if he is does return to top Gagne form, he does it for someone outside the NL West.

Gonzo is gone
MLB.com is reporting that the Dodgers and Luis Gonzalez have agreed to terms on a one-year, $7 million contract.

Re: Gonzo is gone
Gonzalez hits .271/.352/.444 in the BEST hitter's park in baseball (post-Coors humidifier era). That translates to somewhere around .255/.330/.430 at Dodger Stadium. At least his contract is somewhat reasonable, but the Dodgers have probably three minor-leaguers that could outhit that next season. Apparently Colletti brought his Veteran Savvy altar with him to LA.
