Someone shoot me in the god-damn head.
Perfect way to rebuild the team Sabes...Add a few Padre retreads to last year's roster, bring back an older Aurelia and Pedro, and we're set.

On the plus side, I suppose that sections 123-128 are now prime "boo your own player" territory.  I plan on making plenty of visits down there to heckle and bemoan not only Slappy Pete, but also El Mondo as he's warming up in the 'pen.

Welcome Home Pedro
While McCoven might not be your favorite place Pedro, I would like to welcome you back. Glad to hear you are working on your hitting technique and expect to see a much improved Feliz playing in SF in 2007.

Please have better pitch recognition, pitch selection and drive the ball up the middle and to RF. The Giants can use your versatility, defense and run producing. Bienvenidos Feliz!!!

Looks like I don't have much of an option but hope that you're right about this, Wil, even if I don't believe it for a second.

But if I may offer you a bit of advice... if Feliz does have a great year, be as big of a jerk about it as possible. Tell us we're not worthy to cheer his home runs, link to all of your old posts, and call everyone who doubted you out by name.

Cuz if he doesn't, you're probably going to get a pretty big ration of shit around here. :)

Oh, and Sabean signed him to a reasonable contract. I thought all the moneyballers would be pleased.

Time to Put Up
I like to say I always pull for Happy Pete. It was easy to like him in the old days, when he was poor, quiet, played behind El Fatso, and sat at the end of the bench.

But Pedro's made about $12 million in four years, counting this contract. He's no longer an underdog.

It's time to stay within yourself and lay off the outside pitch, Pete.

Re: We Have Fleas :(
Well guys and gals, with the impending Molina Signing we will have spent $27M of our $45M.  The just leaves enough dollars $18M to sign Bonds(under $10M), a third tier SP (under $8M/yr), and a second tier bullpen arm (under $3M/yr).

Re: We Have Fleas :(
Rotoword has the number at $5.1M, which is about all we could hope for once the "between $5-6M" rumors started flying.

"Giants re-signed third baseman Pedro Feliz to a one-year, $5.1 million contract.

Maybe it's possible we don't give MLB GMs enough credit sometimes. It looked like Feliz would cash in this winter after driving in 98 runs and playing excellent defense. However, there just wasn't any interest outside of San Franicsco. Taking him back for one year isn't a bad idea for the Giants. He is one of the game's most underrated defenders, and his pathetic OBP isn't such a problem if he bats sixth or seventh. $5.1 million is a fair salary in this market."

Contradicting themselves!  "Maybe it's possible we don't give MLB GMs enough credit sometimes".  Yes, because DFeliz would be an idiotic signing.  Then, "He is one of the game's most underrated defenders, and his pathetic OBP isn't such a problem if he bats sixth or seventh. $5.1 million is a fair salary in this market"

It's not a good and bad signing, it's just a bad signing.  It's saving grace isn't the $5.1 million, but the one year.  At least they didn't sign Molina to anything like a 3 year contract, right?

The thing about these "he does less harm batting seventh" theories is that they rely on the assumption that there are good hitters batting higher up in the lineup which there, well, aren't. Our best hitter is Ray Durham.

Right, that way:
  • when he hits into inning-ending DPs, the pitcher will get to lead off the next inning.
  • with his low OBP, pitchers will rarely be called upon to bunt him over.

In an attempt to continue the hitting development of young catcher Eliezar Alfonzo, the San Francisco Giants have resigned the only person he even thinks about listening to.

Re: We Have Fleas :(
Although the general public probably underrates OBP and overrates RBIs, I think stat guys often do the opposite. Certain guys will drive in over 100 runs no matter where they hit in the line-up, and certain guys won't drive in 100 runs even if they hit right behind Bonds. I can look at Jeff Francouer's numbers and say, wow, he hit 30 HRs and had 100 RBIs, he's pretty good.

With that said, and my non-stat-geek credentials firmly in place... Pedro Feliz is a really, really bad hitter. The difference? Unlike Francouer, I've seen it. I've seen him flail at horrible pitches in hitter's counts and kill rallies by grounding into double plays. What bothers me more, though, is that it seems like so many of his HRs and RBIs come in blow-out games. I don't have the stats, and I don't care what they say in this case about how "clutch" he is, because I've just seen him choke so many times over the years.

I liked him as a supersub with some pop. I cringe at watching him as a starter.

"Certain guys will drive in over 100 runs no matter where they hit in the line-up"

Yes, power hitters who have people getting on base in front of them (something they have no control over).

Jeff Franceour ranked 17th in the NL in RBI chances. He also hit .320 with RISP, and had 29 homers. The first two haven't been shown to be repeatably abilities, while the third has. Of course, even if I disagree with your argument you have drawn the correct conclusion regarding Pedro Feliz, so...

The point was that when I see what a lot of HRs and RBIs along with a very low OBP in person, as opposed to on paper, my opinion on those numbers changes quite a bit. On the other hand, the extreme of OBP over RBIs was JT Snow hitting third...

Feliz is a batter with the good fortune of garnering 644 PA (from a lovestruck manager) with Barry Bonds, Moises Alou and Ray Durham batting in front of him.  Nothing more but a lot less.

Re: We Have Fleas :(
Well, a bit of silver lining (and I am stretching here) is that the young pitchers will have a team behind them who can field the ball.

With the exception of Bonds' range (if he signs). And his's arm. And Roberts' noodle arm. And Winn's. And Molina's, who can't throw out more than 20% of base stealers. And Molina's limited blocking / lateral movement ability. And the fact that Roberts is better in LF than CF. And that Ray occasionally suffers from bouts of manos de piedras. And that Richie has very limited experience at first base.

Other than that, the Giants are a pretty slick fielding team. Hopefully the Giants manage win a lot of 3-2, 2-1 games, and the pitchers spend a lot of time holding runners on first. Is there really a more exciting element of the grand game, than four consectuvie throws to first base?

Wow, I actually feel better getting all that snarkiness out of my system. Thanks for allowing the emotional enema, McCoven. It's been a rough day for all of us.
