Klesko

Schulman says Klesko signed for 1 year, terms not yet available.

Another 4th/5th infielder
Another 4th-5th outfielder...and a really bad one.

It appears Bochy is being fed all the rope he wants-the hanging awaits him. "All managers get fired no matter what anybody says", said a former MLB manager who is also in the HOF.

Henry S. says Klesko will be able to spell Bonds in LF. Klesko will be a uniform in LF but he'll not replace Bonds - who is old & slow and aches, but he's still a player. Klesko is a washed-up, foot-dragging, overweight misfit in anybody's outfield.

Re: Klesko
The San Francisco Giants and free agent first baseman Ryan Klesko agreed to terms on a $1.75 million, one-year contract Tuesday, giving the club another option at first along with recently acquired Rich Aurilia.

Little more more than I thought.  He should fit in clubhouse comfortably with the other 35 yr olds.

Re: Klesko
Klesko could earn an additional $2 million in performance bonuses based on plate appearances, getting the full amount if he has 550

$1.75M
For some reason the number that originally jumped into my head was $4M. I'll take $1.75M.

Re: $1.75M
Me too. I was honestly thinking $4-$5M was possible.  I kind of like the signing at that price. Very little risk with some good upside.

Re: $1.75M
Surprisingly low.  I give Sabean credit for this.  How does Klesko sign for a couple of million and Molina and Roberts sign for $16-$18  million?

Re: Klesko
I don't think he will attain 550 plate appearances, so at least the Giants won't have to pay the full $2 million in bonuses! If he does reach it, oh,  2007  was a truly horrible season. I have not been a fan of Klesko's play since he was a Brave many seasons ago. I remember him whining about Petco, while I was thinking, "He is lucky to even be in the majors with the way he had been playing, let alone thinking he had the right to complain".

Re: Klesko
I don't think it's an either/to thing.  Incentives top out at $2 million.  Probably something like, $500,000 for 400, $500,000 for 450, $500,000 for 500, $500,000 for 550.

Re: Klesko
Klesko should be happy to know the bonuses are not an either/or proposition. What made me laugh was they actually included a provision for him attaining 550 at-bats. Might as well throw in a MVP bonus as well, as they are just about as unlikely to occur for Klesko. I know, it is a standard contract item, but, the 550 at bats made me laugh.

Re: Klesko
I was thinking:

200 PA    250,000
250 PA    250,000
300 PA    250,000
350 PA    250,000    1M
400 PA    250,000
450 PA    250,000
500 PA    250,000
550 PA    250,000    2M

Re: Klesko
There's an obvious problem with paying a guy with the reputation of being a whiner for the amount of plate appearances that he has. He's going to bitch and moan if he's not able to reach his incentives. The Giants must have given him a pretty good idea that he's going to play close to everyday or else he wouldn't have signed that contract in the first place. I would think he's almost definitely going to be in the lineup everyday against righthanded pitching.

Re: Klesko
With Bochy's current options, I'd be disappointed if he wasn't in the lineup nearly every day against righties.

Re: Klesko
Feliz sucks just as bad against lefties as righties.  If Klesko is anywhere near 100% by the end of March, move him in full-time and send Aurelia over to 3b and park fleas on the bench until/unless Klesko plays himself out of the lineup.

Maybe thats not a great idea, but anything that keeps fleas from starting helps. A lot. Even if it only means the burning desire to polk my eyes out everytime he comes to the plate is extinguished.

As little as I think of Frandsen, at least he tries to use his head and make adjustments. I would rather see him at the plate than fleas.

Re: Klesko
I agree, and I like the fact we have a new manager that probably isn't in love with Feliz like Felipe Alou was. I wanted to polka my eyes out as well when I read that Felipe called him, "Little Pujols." Maybe he meant Luis and not Albert, but I guess Felipe was really that delusional.  If I were the manager he would be my late inning defensive specialist, although I think I would start him against lefties instead of Klesko to begin the season.

Re: Klesko
Pretty cheap to give him a chance.  He can hit if he's healthy.  And, it is only a year.  I happen to like the title of this post 'cause we may very well see lots of "Klesko and GIDP" together.

Re: Klesko
Not really. Klesko's more of a fly ball hitter. He's got that big, looping, uppercutting swing.

If things go uproariously well with Klesko, we'll see lots of drives to triples alley, a goodly number of HRs with maybe even a splash hit or two (Klesko already has one in his career) thrown in for good measure. Klesko--it sort of rhymes with Crespo!

If things go moderately well, maybe we'll see a slight uptick in his normal Mays Park numbers (.757 OPS), and we'll see a lot less Pedro Feliz.

If things go south, we'll see lots of pop-ups, fly balls to the warning track, lots more pop-ups, and more than a few instances of smashed bats, flung bats, and pounded-into-the-ground bats. And more pop-ups.  Lots and lots of them.  And we'll pine for the halcyon days of Steve Finley.

OK, they can't possibly go that far south.

No... he's Type B. It does give the Padres another supplemental pick, though.

Re: Klesko
He's a type B free agent and the Padres offered Arb. We lost a 2nd round pick for Aurelia and a third round pick for Roberts.

So I think this means we've lost a 4th round pick for the Klesko signing.

Re: Klesko
I wonder what he would have received in arb.  I would have guessed more than the $1.75 he's guaranteed from us.  Must be the Bochy factor.

Re: Klesko
The Padres cheated the system by getting most of their players to agree not to accept arbitration... that's why they offered it to more players than anyone else.
