Incredibly secret Grant can't look but even if he does we don't care diary

I have been trying to keep up this list, and I think it is complete.  Just in case, check to see if you should be there but aren't.

Also:  we need someone to take the donations and make this stuff happen.  Hopefully, someone well-known and trustworthy will step up and volunteer (someone in/near SF?).  I believe the favorite gift idea is now 1/2 to the Junior Giants, 1/2 to a gift certificate to the Giants dugout store, so the poll is an up/down vote on it.

Here is the list:

I think the All Star Game Ticket is a great idea, IMO. We could just buy 40 McCoveyChronicles T-shirts and distribute them to kids across the land... ;)

Re: Incredibly secret Grant can't look but ....
Just my thought: A amazon.com gift certificate might be more useful than a dugout store, as it has a wider range of stuff. But I do like the idea of it going towards tickets.

$350 is a fair number of games, depending on the seats you get. Grant is working and going to school in the South Bay? Might be difficult.

I really wouldn't care either way though.

According to StubHub, we can't even get one view reserved ticket for undeer $799. So, I doubt it's particularly good use of the funds.

Logistics
Seems that Paypal will be the best way to make this happen, yes?  Here's the thing: unless one of us has a "Premier/Business" account with PayPal, then it will be difficult for one PayPal account to receive all of this money if a lot of people use their credit/debit cards on PayPal rather than direct payment from their bank accounts.  I or anyone else with a PayPal account could receive all of this money without any fees if everyone is using direct payment.  The language on the site says that it's free with a normal account to:

"Receive payments funded by PayPal Balance, PayPal Instant Transfer or PayPal eChec"

and the following conditions apply to Credit Card payments:

4.9% + $0.30 USD (limit of 5 transactions per 12 month period)**

If, on the other hand, someone has a Pro account, then it's no problem to receive CC payments, but there are some fees -- 30 cents plus 2-3% per transaction.  All told that would knock only about $40-50 out of the pot with about 50 people putting in $800, so that doesn't sound too bad to me.

So to boil that all down, I think people on the pledge list should respond to this IF they MUST USE CREDIT CARD on PayPal.  If more than 5 people say that, then we need to find a Pro account or split this up over multiple accounts, which would be messy, but possible.

I don't have much PayPal experience..
What is a way to not use credit cards on PayPal?

Re: I don't have much PayPal experience..
You link your checking account to it and become "verified".  Then you can choose to make payments directly from that account.  It's what I do, but for all I know 99% use credit cards just as you do.

Re: Logistics
I think it's a lot to ask of someone to receive a bunch of $10 and $20 checks in the mail and deal with depositing them.  Maybe someone else feels up to that, but I don't think I would.  It's so easy to set up PayPal that I think you should do it for this purpose even if you don't use it after that. Does anyone else on the pledge list have a problem using PayPal?

by sularz on Dec 19, 2006 6:21 AM PST up reply actions

Re: Logistics
I have serious concerns about giving Paypal (or any other unregulated business) access to my checking account information. I'd do Paypal via credit card, but not via direct transfer.

by Gordo on Dec 19, 2006 7:23 AM PST up reply actions

Re: Logistics
That's fine -- it sounds like a lot of people probably do the same, so we'll need to figure out a way to get a bunch of PayPal credit card payments together.

by sularz on Dec 19, 2006 9:44 AM PST up reply actions

Re: Logistics
Is there some way to string paypal payments together?

Example:
A,B,C,D, and E pay F. F pays SUM A:F -(paypal fees) to G, who is also paid by H,I,J,K. G pays SUM (amount from F + SUM H:K). And so forth.

Does the transaction free preclude this? Is it getting too many people involved?

Missed this whole conversation till now because my son (2029 opening day starter for the Giants) was born on the 8th.

I'm good for $10.

I think a gift certificate is LAME.  A cop-out.  This is a good chunk of money, and I think Grant deserves something more tangible.  I just don't know what.

A few things...
...I've fallen behind a bit on the "secret" threads, so I missed the part where Grant specifically requested us not to get him anything. I tend to respect this, so I would be more comfortable giving to charity in his name.

The Junior Giants' online donation form has an "I would like to make this donation as a gift...." checkbox, and a place where you could put a name in. We could check with the Junior Giants to make sure that they track these donations by "gift recipient," and shoot for the $500 "All-Star" level, which equips a full team of 20 kids for an entire season.

Or, Grant could nix this idea too and a Little League team could play barefoot for a season, hitting a ball of duct tape with a broom handle. It's his call.

If we feel the need to put something in his decidedly ungreedy little mitts other than charity donations, I searched his name for an Amazon wish list, and, um... found one. Amidst all the CDs by indy rock bands that no one has ever heard of that Grant doesn't care about but only put up there so he would look cool if anyone stumbled upon his list... is the complete Calvin & Hobbes anthology at $90. I'm just saying.

Re: A few things...
I respect your respect for Grant's discomfort, but I think we've moved past that collectively.  It's just a way of saying 'thanks', and I don't personally think we need to feel conflicted about it.

2nd the Calvin and Hobbes..
Just sayin...who wouldn't want it?  Or perhaps the complete Peanuts collection?  The parts of it that have come out at least.

*Note: Sarcasm has been used in this post.  I think giving him some tickets are a great idea along with the Junior Giants.

Here's to a good 2007. Or 2008. Or 2009. Or 2010. Or...

by WalrusMan on Dec 19, 2006 12:27 PM PST up reply actions

that's where the dugout comes in
I think we decided a gift certificate to the giants dugout store would be perfect because then he could use the money to by tickets if he so chose.  then he could choose the game, the seats, the # of tix, etc.

the real problem now is how to compile the caaash.

Re: A few things...
I tend to feel the way Pants Man does. Since Grant has specifically asked us to not get him something (and intimated that this may become a pay site), I feel much more comfortable donating in his name.

I'll think about how strenuously I feel about this and come to a decision soon.
