Grant -- don't you dare peek at this diary!

I'm serious, Grant -- stop it.  Close it now.

Okay, the rest of you -- I'd like to chip and get Grant something for Kwanzmaskkah or Festivus or whatever. Anyone know what he might want and what an easy way to buy it collectively might be?

this is a test
This could be pricey -- but we are a big community -- but Grant would probably love an Oxford English Dictionary. The one that's like a set of encyclopedias or the big two-book set that comes with a magnifying glass. i have an OED and i just love it. it gives you all the etymology, the first known usage of the word. just all sorts of stuff. And, as a bonus, it's a very dignifying looking thing that any pair of newlyweds would love to have in their bookcase.

a really nice OED is proabably $700 or $800 but i'm willing to chip in and put my trust in the community if someone can figure out how too cooridnate this.

should lots of people submit gift ideas and then put it to a vote?

Re: this is a test
That's brilliant, and the cost wouldn't be bad considering there are a gajillion of us.

Re: this is a test
I think that's PERFECT. Let's see if any non-contraband ideas come up that are better, but this is the early front-runner. I'm sure there are 40 of us who would chip $20 in for this.

This does sound like a great idea..
But I'm not sure about some of you people, but already shopping for Christmas, having some winter break plans already set, driving a car with 12 mpg, and paying for college (albiet West Valley) while just losing your job has left me a little short.  As someone suggested above, 40 people at $20 wouldn't be bad but how many people can we get to support it?

Re: This does sound like a great idea..
I'm a broke-ass mofo for the next few months (yay tuition and books) but I can chip in a few dollars. I was gonna say if 80 people chipped in $10 each that'd get up to a nice chunk of change. $10 is do-able, yes? And I'm sure we'd be able to get 80 people to donate.

Re: this is a test
It appears that the 20 volume OED is now $895.  The CD-ROM version is $295, and the Compact Version is $399.95.

Or, there is the Compact OED in slipcase with reading glass from Amazon for $263.97.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Dec 14, 2006 2:52 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

the OED CD-ROM is on Amazon for $230
The OED is something like 28 volumes, so while it is a theoretically great gift, it also imposes a huge burden (literally!) on the recipient-- we'd be speaking for a big chunk of their damn home!  The CD-ROM has the whole thing in a more manageable format.  And at $230, everyone can throw in whatever they can afford, from a couple of dollars up to $20 or whatever, and we'll get there quickly.

If we're not going with hookers & blow, this might be the way to go.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends (where "breach" = another meaningless October.)

Re: the OED CD-ROM is on Amazon for $230
Hookers, blow, and the OED would be the best gift ever.

I agree about the full set, but personally I'd rather have the compact edition than the CD-ROM. It's a bit unwieldy, but you feel like Sherlock Holmes every time you pull out that magnifying glass.

Re: this is a test
OED on CD or a COED are both awesome ideas for a word nerd, but having been a student a couple times, I know that certain academic institutions actually grant (GEDDIT?) Internet access to the online version of the OED as part of being a student (probably faculty, too). So before we splurge on something so weighty, we maybe would want to kind of find out if Grant can already access the OED, and perhaps more relevantly, if he'd still want to after getting done with the hell of higher learning.

Re: A logistical aside
I'm pretty sure that's true only if people are paying by credit card.  If you receive payments by direct bank account payment, there's no charge for receiving money.  But maybe most people use credit cards when they use paypay, in which case you're right -- I also think there's a montly limit on how much you can receive by credit card if you're not a business user.

Re: Grant -- don't you dare peek at this diary!
I'll contribute $20 as well. But I'd like to defer $12 of those dollars through the year 2010. Basically $8 now, $2 for each of the next 3 years, and $6 in the final year.

Re: Grant -- don't you dare peek at this diary!
Key question: Do those deferred dollars count against next year's gift budget or are they paid out of a separate fund?

other ideas
I like the idea of something baseball related.  There's some great sites out there that sell replica baseball jerseys and hats from years past, which could be cool.  Perhaps a book such as the Giants encyclopedia (yes, he probably already has that).  I know any serious giants fan would like more gear - maybe a really nice jacket - ooh the letter jackets are sweet (you know, wool with the leather sleeves).  Maybe a sweet authentic jersey with Brisbie on the back?  Tickets to a game in a luxury box?

I like the OED idea but I feel like something giants related would be fitting.

2002? I'm over it.

Count me in for $20 too. A very small token of appreciation for two amazing years here (and WFB before that).

You'll just have to guide me on how to get the money to you from abroad.

And I think the OED idea is terrific. The full version, not the CD or condensed. Grant would appreciate the inconsiderateness of bestowing 28 volumes upon him almost as much as he'd love the dictionary itself, don't you think?

It is pretty sweet. My parents owned one when I was growing up, but I didn't really appreciate it. Whenever I see one in someone's place now, I always give a compliment.

When I was living in New York I worked at the Strand bookstore for a bit. Nothing got those people excited like seeing a cool old edition of the OED brought in to the rare books department.

So for the next thread on what to get him, what about a series of gift cards? Is that lame or impractical? Something like:

--$100 to a bookstore (Borders, Amazon, B and N)
--$100 to a camping store (REI?)
--$100 for the Giants Dugout or something similar
--$100 to a liquor store or someone could just buy him some good Scotch or Gin or beer, whatever it is he drinks.
--$100 in cash

That would cover the $500 it looks like we can raise. Does anyone know Grant personally? I don't, but it's my impression he likes martinis; he's been camping a few times (right?); he likes to read; he likes the Giants.

Double-check for me, but I get a total of $621 (plus beer!) - depending on redhornet, exchange rates, Social Security... you get the picture.

Of course, more people could come out of the woodwork.

Also: everyone please check the list to see if you should be on it but aren't.

Did Grant even read TK's post predicting his predictable reaction, or can he not tame his inner predictability?  Jamie Foxx said it, Grant, and Mrs. Grant might just concur: Keep it Unpredictable! Make love in a hammock! Shut up and let us express our appreciation! Give whatever we get you to Steve S if you feel too terrible! After all, he has to do actual research before he posts...

Just a thought:  if Grant really is terribly uncomfortable with this, and we actually decide to respect that, we could also take the money and make a donation to the charity of his choice.

Re: Grant -- don't you dare peek at this diary!
OK ok, I'll kick in $20 and have the following proposal:
  • Give half the $ to Junior Giants
  • Give the other half to Grant in a dugout store gift certificate since I think he could use it toward actual tickets if he wants.
Here's my thinking: Having seen Grant's beloved beat up old POS cap, I'm not sure that he'd go for the fancy jackets and jerseys.  Also, if Grant puts the kibash (sp?) on this whole thing, he'd be denying the kids, and the guilt would kill him.

I know "Junkcar" Vida Blue would approve...heh, heh, heh.

Is the motion seconded?

Re: Grant -- don't you dare peek at this diary!
Didn't Grant write somewhere that there is an ad available for purchase where he gets the income and not sportsblog? I think we could have fun with that, rotating messages from each of us (one a week?) throughout 2007 and Grant can use the money to buy hookers and smack, in case coke ain't his bag.

Also, if we go with the ad idea we have a dollar amount to shoot for and this becomes more of a telethon, which is a fun way to pass the day.

I'd also like to see how creative we could all get with our week on the main site, as I assume we'll try to one up each other as the season progresses.

Let's start working toward consensus on gift
I could definitely support donating part to Junior Giants in Grant's name and part on a Dugout gift certificate. I haven't abandoned the tangible idea of gifts, either.  The ad thing seems like a very cool thing if we could make it work, but kind of a lot of trouble (not that the trouble matters to me; my involvement will be limited to embezzling 20 clams and sending it where you guys tell me).
Once more unto the breach, dear friends (where "breach" = another meaningless October.)
