Around SBN: NHL Trade Rumors: Do You Make A Move For Rick Nash?

Bride of Title

The Mariners traded for Jose Vidro's husk, ostensibly to DH. With Sexson not guaranteed to go anywhere, what would the going rate be for Ben Broussard? Keep in mind that Bill Bavasi could easily outidiot Brian Sabean in a blither-off. Easily. And that's impressive.

Broussard is a lefty Lance Niekro-type, but one that has actually reached his limited potential. A platoon of Aurilia and Broussard wouldn't do wonders for the ol' OBP woes, but there would be a chance for 25 homers. Broussard is rumored to field like a dizzy Mike Wallace, but the idea's somewhat intriguing.

The post-Winter Meetings crash might be the hardest of them all....

Grant, you sniped me! I was just about to post a "What about Broussard?" diary.

If we signed him, we could have a rock band on our hands. Broussard plays guitar and sings and Omar can play drums.

Do you think Broussard and Omar (Bromar? Omaroussard?) would rock hard enough to hurt themselves?

Re: Bride of Title
This is Bavasi we're talking about.  We could probably dump Benitez's whole contract and get a real prospect in return.

Have you guys checked out USS Mariner and USS Mariner?  We need to put these guys on suicide watch.

Is there any truth to the rumor that USS Mariner is about to be renamed USS Titanic?  (Yeah, I stole that line from someone else)

This is actually too bad.  I like the Mariners.  I like Seattle.  They don't deserve this.  But this gives them "DH" Jose Vidro, Sexson, and Broussard.  I'm thinking we can get Sexson and get them to 1) take Benitez, and 2) still eat some of Sexson's contract.  Anything is possible with Bavasi.

Re: Bride of Title
Bavasi makes godawful trades, but they all involve acquiring overpriced veterans, not trading them away. So I don't think he's going anywhere.

Re: Bride of Title
There is some funny stuff over there, here's my favorite:

What if?
What if Bavasi was named Joseph, was a carpenter and lived in the Middle East about 2000 years ago?

I think he would have traded Mary and baby Jesus for a 15 year old Donkey, with a history of lameness.

Bavasi/Joeseph quote from the Jerusalem Times "But hey, that Donkey is a veteran. And look...he worked for the conquering Romans. He is a proven winner!"

The donkey has veteran savvy.  As a Giants fan, how can you argue with that?

The interesting thing, to me, is that it seems Lookout Landing gets a lot more "traffic" than True Blue LA.

Re: Bride of Title
Broussard: meh. Poor fielding, a K/W ratio that just keeps getting worse, a park that's not kind to lefty line-drive hitters, and a salary of at least $3 million . . . I don't see much of an upgrade on Sweeney there.

Can't we please just have Carlos Delgado?

Jose Vidro?

Re: Bride of Title
Sadly, Vidro will probably be worse.  At least we traded for Alfonzo when he had just been good.

Benny
While at school in Ohio I saw him play with the Indians a few times. One game I was at last season he hit a couple jacks and the tribe beat the Red Socks like 16-2. I should do the link thing but I'm lazy. Anyways, upon first thinking about getting him, I was all for it, but after looking at his numbers, it seems he really isn't much of an improvement over Sweeney as a not good enough to be your everyday first baseman. In Cleveland, though, he was a fan favorite, as the crowd would sometimes chant 'BEN-NY, BEN-NY' when he came up to bat. I guess we could have that to look forward to?

Re: Bride of Title
I've been chirping about Broussard - here, but mainly on another board - ever since there seemed to be a chance that he would be non-tendered. The slg% over .500 against rhp in '06 seemed too good to pass up, and a clear upgrade over Sweeney.
I still don't want Sweeney starting against rhps on an every day basis at 1B, but their numbers ARE very similar if you look at the splits for the past 3 yrs. In fact, Sweeney has a better ops vs. rhp.
So... is it worth going after Broussard? Maybe only if it happens in a Benitez contract shed. Bavasi just might be stupid enough to do this. What about for Hennessey straight up? I think I would still do this, since I can't stand seeing them keep pretending that Hennessey is a legitimate starter. Given that the M's wouldn't take Rodrigo Lopez from the O's for Broussard, could be that they would want more from us (though Hennessey is clearly a money saver).

Guess I couldn't have been chirping here, since my only other post was about Chris Duncan. My bad.

Re: Bride of Title
Broussard? Better than what the Giants have got, but not a difference-maker. Invest the money into pitching help. Hold out for Sexson. Dump Benitez. If you must give up a prospect, make it Lance Niekro.

I wouldn't mind having him around. He'd be nice insurance if Aurilia and/or Feliz don't work out. On the other hand, he'd better come cheap, as we've already got Sweeney around.
