I'm an honorary Brewers fan--somehow I attract a high concentration of men from Milwaukee, and thus I've learned a lot about the Brew Crew--and I love Yovani Gallardo. I am looking forward to seeing him turned loose on the league.

Good. That'll save us $8 million of wasted money. I'm ecstatic to be able to waste it elsewhere.

On the other hand, for those of us keeping track, Texas signing Gagne for $8 million would mean it's now harder for them to make that serious bid at Zito (and since we didn't get dead arm, $8 million we still have for Zito). Good news for us? I'm still not sure, but with the Free Agent pool getting pretty dry I definitely wouldn't hate it.

Re: Non-Giants League News 12/11
Good riddance, don't want Gagme around here anyhow, he would not be a difference maker.  The only difference maker on the market right now, besides Bonds once the contract details are all worked out, is Barry Zito.

Not that I think he is particularly that good, but rather that he is good enough to make our rotation a really good rotation, rather than one with possible question marks and problems areas.  Plus he's still young and the way contracts are going, we could always trade him in the next season or two if we really wanted to get rid of the contract, particularly to the Yankees or Red Sox, or even the Rangers, they should have money next off-season.

Now let's cross our fingers...

Astros get Jason Jennings

The Astros have acquired Jason Jennings and Miguel Asencio from the Rockies for Jason Hirsh, Willy Taveras and Taylor Buchholz, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.

Blarg, no kidding. Tavares alone is a steal for the Rockies.

Re: Non-Giants League News 12/11
The real prize of the deal is Jason Hirsh, who is going to turn into a nice starter soon. He'll probably start 2007 in the Rockies rotation.

He better get in on that Coors Field action soon... before everyone figures out whats wrong with those baseballs.

Re: Non-Giants League News 12/11
I am starting to believe that Hirsh, while a good pitching prospect, is a bit overrated due to his good, not great peripherals.

Re: Non-Giants League News 12/11
But even if you think hes overrated, which I don't really think he is - his minor league numbers are soild, Jennings is a free agent in one year. Doesn't make a lot of sense to trade all those guys for a possible rental.

Re: Non-Giants League News 12/11
Yes, I believe that the rox got the better of deal.

Buuuut, it isn't so lopsided that there isn't some logic to the Astros.

1.) Hirsh is unproven, and may only be a potential 3 0r 4
2.) Taveras is OK, but starting to get expensive.
3.) Taylor Buchholtz has been hurt a lot, and not all that good when healty
4.) Jennings grounball tendencies should play well at the juice box.
5.) There is probably some hangover effect from pitching at Coors when you are on the road

The Dodgers are evil.

I like that deal for the rox, unless they intend to play Taveras a lot.

Also the Reds DFA's Brandon Claussen. I wouldn't mind signing him to a minor league contract to let him compete for a spot.

Pretty much, but Claussen in a lefty and might have some use as a LOOGY. He had good stuff at one point.
