Orioles: No Interest in Bonds

Well, that's one down.

"Several national reports have linked the Orioles to free agent Barry Bonds. However, the Orioles, wary of the baggage that comes with Bonds, have no interest at this point in the San Francisco Giants slugger, according to several team officials."

Re: Orioles: No Interest in Bonds
It's like I've been saying, Bonds has no place to go but SF and, frankly, he doesn't want to go anyplace else but SF, but has to do whatever he can (and whatever his agent can think of) to get the Giants to fork over the moolah, it's the American capitalist way.

Unfortunately for him, he has no leverage this time, unlike last time.  His Balco/steroid connection is probably why he couldn't go to Boras again (like last time) to try to strongarm the Giants into giving him more dough, even Boras knows that aligning himself with Bonds would be a losing proposition this time.

I still think that he will get under $10M, but now might temper that with the Giants also throwing in a big donation to a Bonds approved charity (like his charity), that would bring the total figure over $10M, that could be one way of assuaging his ego without shelling out more cash, as charity donations is part of another part of their corporate budget.  Like pay Bonds $8M but agree to donate $1M each year for the next 5-10 years to his family's charity (which some of his relatives work for, so some of the money will end up in the Bonds family pockets somehow).  I recall the Cards doing something like that for McGwire's last contract, money went to an abused children charity that McGwire started up.

That way, it looks like Bonds's getting more money but having his charity get it instead, directly, the Giants don't have to actually pay more out, though that means another charity doesn't get that money, and Bonds end up back with the Giants with some shred of his ego and dignity intact, helping his inner id survive this possible affront to his respect.

Barry's last contract with the Giants actually had this provision.

10-year personal services contract begins after playing career ends, paying $1M annually to the Bonds Family Foundation

This however had nothing to do with the $90M for 5 years of play portion of his contract of which he is still owed $25M.

$5M/year of 2002-06 salaries deferred at 3.5% interest, paid 07-11

Do you really think the Giants or Barry are really interested in adding any more dollars or years to his personal services for charity contibution contract?

Re: Orioles: No Interest in Bonds
Actually, that's different, because that's an actual separate contract for "personal services", whatever that means, probably taking over for Junk Car Vida (while Kuip subs) for the cars for Giants Kids.

I'm talking money donated with no other labor put in other than playing in 2007.

I know, his head looks so much bigger than Bochy's!

I just don't see Bonds going to Texas, with the heat there and everything and the way he complains about his old aching body.  I would call his bluff, I hope the Giants hold their ground and not give in.

How deep are the outfield fences in Arlington?  I think the hot weather would be good for his legs/knees.  And DHing as well??  Not out of the question.

The summer in Texas is brutal. Went to a Saturday NIGHT game that started at 7:00pm and game time temp was 92!! A buddy and I who are diehard baseball fans and stay to final out could not handle the heat. We left after 6 innings.

Re: Orioles: No Interest in Bonds
It is that scorching Texas summer heat that wilts any good man. The players on the field were on one knee during a pitching change. A clubhouse kid came out with a water jug just like they do during football timeouts. We left and went home and jumped in the pool.

Re: Orioles: No Interest in Bonds
Texas summers ain't anything compared to what Sacramento goes through.  I went to a Rivercats game this last season and it was ONLY 104 at a 7:00 first pitch.  Now that's some heat !
Hats for bats, keep bats warm !

Word. I live in Davis, and summers here are miserable. My fraternity house ran up a $1900 electricity bill for the month of July... bless central air conditioning.
