Heard this on the news on KNBR, like an hour ago, that the Padres have selected Bud Black as their next manager, as reported by the SD Union, their local newspaper.
This was as many here had speculated, that Black was just setting himself up to get the SD job by getting his name attached to the SF and Oakland job search in order to prime the pump so that SD would go to him as a potential interviewee when they need to make a list.
Clearly Bochy was gone within a year, once SD gave him permission to seek a better situation, cause they wouldn't want to hold him back from a better situation (that is, it wouldn'd crush them if he finds another job and save them having to pay his salary for nothing when they fire his ass during this off-season; how can a lame duck manager succeed when the team knows he went interviewing for the job of a rival team?).
Black played his cards perfectly, I guess he scored on his interview, and now he's got his dream job, since he still lives in the SD area and his middle-school daughter can stay at her school and not change - he previously said that he didn't want to manage until his children were out of high school, but I guess he figured that as SD maanger, that would be a good enough compromise.
