Mulder

I believe the idea of signing Mulder has been mentioned in comments by a few people, but I had not seen anything in print until today.

This article says that the Giants are considering signing him:

Agent Gregg Clifton told reporters last week that eight clubs have already expressed interest in signing Mulder as a free agent. The Mets, Orioles, Dodgers, Giants, Diamondbacks, Padres and Devil Rays are among the teams at the forefront of early speculation, and St. Louis would like to keep him around if the price is right.

Of course this is coming from his agent so should be taken with a grain of salt. I like the idea, but only if the deal is short and cheap, which isn't likely. Thoughts?

Re: Mulder
short, cheap, and laden with incentives tied to IP...

His arm looks shot to death - he has lost 4-5 mph and his motion has changed a lot. The cleanup of his shoulder may help, but it may also take a really long time to come back from.

An Agent says teams are interested? Try a pound of Salt.

Pedro Feliz reminds me of a corvair. The Dodgers are evil.

Re: Mulder
And Bonds agent said that all 30 teams are interested in Bonds.  How he could say that with a straight face, I have no idea.

Pass on Mulder, his stats have been just horrible lately, as well as his health.  Does not fit the healthier portion of the "younger and healthier" promise, even compared to Schmidt.

Re: Mulder
I'd offer Mulder $500K with incentives, plus a second-year club option for $5 million that gets bumped up the more he pitches in '07. That way, you basically pay him $500K to rehab next year, and if he's healthy enough to contribute, he gets a little extra cheese in the present and in the future.

Re: Mulder
Do you really want to go cheap on Mulder in the off chance of catching lightning in a jar or pay a more for, say, Vicente Padilla, but am pretty sure what you are going to get?

This works only if Lincecum really is ready by mid-season and can take over for Mulder at that point.  That's about the only way I can see doing that type of deal with Mulder, he's been bad and injured too long for my tastes.  Just because he was good before does not mean he's going to recover.

Re: Mulder
I don't think it's an either/or. If Mulder wants to go rock-bottom ($500K) + incentives, it would give the Giants lots of payroll flexibility. There's not much downside. He'll be on the 60-day DL so not taking up a roster spot; if he's healthy enough to puitch, he pitches. If not, he stays on the DL.

Re: Mulder
I read this morning that Padilla is asking for 4 years 36 million dollars. I like Padilla, and he is probably my number one choice out there that the Giants can afford, but I would pass at these numbers.

Re: Mulder
"How he could say that with a straight face, I have no idea."

Borris was exagerating. There are actually only 6 teams, besides the Giants that are interested in Barry's services. My sources tell me this is the jist of their offers.

Team 1:  So Barry, can you park cars?
Team 2.  We have an opening for a ball dude
Team 3.  Interested in opening a pizza concession in the bleachers?
Team 4.  Do you know shorthand?
Team 5.  We're looking for somebody to drive the team bus.
Team 6.  Our Media Relations department is hiring, why don't you check in with them

St Louie Wants Mulder
and is willing to try something different according to St Louis Dispatch from ESPN MLB Rumors

http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are interested in Mulder returning to the team for a third season. GM Walt Jocketty said the Cardinals may be interested in offering the free-agent left-hander something different than the one-year, incentive-laden deal he's bound to receive from other teams.

Re: Mulder
Mulder! because she's only named Scully because Chris Carter is a big D'gers fan. Where you do you think the name Agent Doggit came from when Duchovny left, too?
