Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link
Looks like Schmidt is either gonna stay at "home" in SF or go back home to Washington state. At least the Dodgers won't be getting him. Whew.
"Mariners: Right-handed pitcher Jason Schmidt -- one of the top free-agent arms on the market this winter -- has narrowed his choices to returning to San Francisco or joining the Mariners next season, according to the Houston Chronicle. Schmidt is from Longview, Wash., and is believed to be interested in pitching in his home state. That could help the Mariners' chances of landing him. Schmidt faced the same decision following the 2001 season. His agent made a verbal commitment to sign with the Mariners, but Schmidt changed his mind several hours later, and re-signed with the Giants."

I wonder how much the decision to drop Felipe and pick up Bochy affected his decision? Probably was a factor in the decision, since Schmidt probably wouldn't forget about Felipe outting him after the 2003 playoffs, basically blaming him for not starting that fourth game.

I'm guessing Schmidt's agent isn't crazy about word getting out that he's only interested in two teams as now there can't be phantom teams driving his price up.
As also said above, Bochy's hiring (and Felipe's departure)probably bodes well for our chances of getting him. I'd think Rags returning bodes really well.

But if the contract fits, I would really like to have him back. Especially more than Jeff Suppan or Ted "I'm a free agent" Lily. A move like this might help to make my offseason. But still, only under the right contractual conditions.
What those conditions are... now that's the tricky part, and I haven't quite decided what I think would be good for the team based on his value.... Time will tell. This could be a moot point very soon anyway.

``Schmidt seems to have narrowed his choices to San Francisco and Seattle before the bidding has begun.''
This looks like pure speculation to me. It's not even informed speculation. Schmidt's former agents, the Hendrick Bros., are from Houston, but he's represented by Michael Moye now.
There's no way the guy narrows his list to two teams before the padlock comes off the supermarket door.
