Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link

Looks like Schmidt is either gonna stay at "home" in SF or go back home to Washington state.  At least the Dodgers won't be getting him.  Whew.

"Mariners: Right-handed pitcher Jason Schmidt -- one of the top free-agent arms on the market this winter -- has narrowed his choices to returning to San Francisco or joining the Mariners next season, according to the Houston Chronicle. Schmidt is from Longview, Wash., and is believed to be interested in pitching in his home state. That could help the Mariners' chances of landing him. Schmidt faced the same decision following the 2001 season. His agent made a verbal commitment to sign with the Mariners, but Schmidt changed his mind several hours later, and re-signed with the Giants."

Re: Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link
I figured as much.  He seems to be very much a homebody, he was very close to his mom before she passed.

I wonder how much the decision to drop Felipe and pick up Bochy affected his decision?  Probably was a factor in the decision, since Schmidt probably wouldn't forget about Felipe outting him after the 2003 playoffs, basically blaming him for not starting that fourth game.

Re: Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link
So if he's narrowed it down to these two teams, what does that do to change the bidding war? Could this signal a possible discount?

Re: Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link
I don't know Jason Schmidt, but as said above, he seems like the kind of guy to whom the biggest dollar figure would not be the deciding factor.  I would also bet he feels like the Giants have treated him fairly over the years when it comes to contracts or he wouldn't have re-upped last time.  I hope we don't get into a bidding war, but if it's just with one team that we're competing, it might be reasonable.

I'm guessing Schmidt's agent isn't crazy about word getting out that he's only interested in two teams as now there can't be phantom teams driving his price up.

As also said above, Bochy's hiring (and Felipe's departure)probably bodes well for our chances of getting him.  I'd think Rags returning bodes really well.

Re: Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link
I was bigtime on the "let Schmidt walk" bandwagon during the season because I didn't think there was any chance he'd have a reasonable contract after the free agency melee...

But if the contract fits, I would really like to have him back. Especially more than Jeff Suppan or Ted "I'm a free agent" Lily. A move like this might help to make my offseason. But still, only under the right contractual conditions.

What those conditions are... now that's the tricky part, and I haven't quite decided what I think would be good for the team based on his value.... Time will tell. This could be a moot point very soon anyway.

Disaster?
Does this mean he's willing to accept a short term deal, or are we about to sign one of the worst contracts in the history of the franchise?

Maybe I won't have to retire my Schmidt jersey after all. Perhaps I'm getting nostalgic, but all this talk of possibly having Schmidt back maybe with Barry and Richie... Sigh... JT would theoreticallly be a better 1st base choice than hindenberg right?
Cerrano wants some extra power for tonight. He's looking to sacrifice a live chicken.

Re: Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link
I'd say let Seattle have Schmitty and his unfortunately diminishing skills...Look what they paid for Sexton and Beltre..you know that they know Schmitty only wants to play for two teams, they're gonna bid up the wazoo for him, we have bigger needs...

Re: Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link
Schmidt would be fine with me, though I suspect he'll still be too expensive. One advantage is that signing Schmidt could allow the Giants to turn some of their young pitching into young hitting. With Schmidt on board, for example, it would be tempting to make Jon Sanchez a key component of a trade for one of the Tampa outfielders, Mark Teahen or B.J. Upton.

Re: Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link
I think Seattle dropping out of the Matsuke bidding means they are focused in on Jason Schmidt and the agent knows exactly how much they're offering, even if that is supposed to be a no-no at this point of the free agent season. Otherwise he would be shouting from the top of a mountain that this report of Schmidt only being interested in just two teams is not true.

Re: Schmidt's New Home, SF or Seattle: Link
I don't think he needs to shout. Here is the line from the Houston Chronicle. It's a throw-in from a column on Pettitte and Clemens by Richard Justice:

``Schmidt seems to have narrowed his choices to San Francisco and Seattle before the bidding has begun.''

This looks like pure speculation to me. It's not even informed speculation. Schmidt's former agents, the Hendrick Bros., are from Houston, but he's represented by Michael Moye now.

There's no way the guy narrows his list to two teams before the padlock comes off the supermarket door.
