Re: Roberts has deal in place with Giants
Well, it's looking lie the only guys that we're going to be able to sign (Aurillia, Roberts) are guys that have played for Bochy.

Mr. Klesko...Mr. Ryan Klesko...please pick up the white courtesy phone.

By the way, Loretta makes the all-girlie team. Off the top of my head:

Mark Loretta
Bob Shirley
Brad Leslie
Pete Rose
Jeff Francis
Tommy Herr
Dale Murphy

Screw that, I'm holding out for Tony Gwynn.  The original one.  I guarantee you his OBP will be better than Pedro Feliz's.

Re: Roberts has deal in place with Giants
good one. The San Diego Union is reporting today that the Giants are one of two teams talking to Klesko.

That same site (along with the source they quote) had Craig Counsell going to the Padres yesterday.  Anyone have a more reliable source?

It's interesting....they quoted the San Diego Tribune, but you can't find it on the Tribune website anywhere....

Hmmm... I think we need to fix this somehow
How about this:

Next year's possible free agents include Andruw Jones, Vernon Wells, Torii Hunter, and Mike Cameron.  But we'll have two mediocre CFs signed already and that will probably stop us from going after any of these good CFs.

Re: thanks nick...
Bochy has started Roberts and Cameron in the same outfield before, don't be surprised if it happens again.

Re: Hmmm... I think we need to fix this somehow
I somewhat disagree with this.  The salaries (assuming Roberts is getting what is "reported") between Roberts and Winn will be sub-15M.  Unless the Giants are going cheap with their third outfielder for multiple years (i.e. another "cheapo" stopgap guy or Linden), I'd imagine that the Giants will have an open outfield spot, and some money to spend.

This would especially be true if they choose to resign Bonds for this year.  The amount they pay him this year will again be freed up at the end of next year, providing a sizeable chunk of what will be needed to sign any Andruw Jones-esq player.

Of course, theres still the argument that loading 1/5th of your payroll into one player is a bad idea.  Hopefully Linden can show (as the 4th OF) this season that he can play on an everyday basis and perhaps hit third, fifth or sixth in a lineup.  If not, we'll probably be in for more Dave Roberts-esq players next off season as well.

Re: Hmmm... I think we need to fix this somehow
Right... there are worse things than having three center fielders in your outfield, particularly when neither Roberts nor Winn is ever going to win a Gold Glove out there. Plus, assuming that at least one of them doesn't suck next year (which is not a lock, I'll admit), they would have tradeable contracts.

Still, I'm not terribly happy with this deal, particularly the third year.

Re: Hmmm... I think we need to fix this somehow
But then you have Roberts and Winn as your LF and RF or you have to get rid of them somehow.

In theory, this shouldn't stop the Giants from going after Jones or Wells, but I have a hunch that it will.  I don't think Roberts at this price is a bad deal in this market.  It's a hell of a lot better than Pierre or Matthews.  It just doesn't fit with the team's needs very well.

I definitely agree with your point down below that giving Winn the big extension was the really bad mistake.

Wow, so signing Dave Roberts is just COLOSSALLY stupid, not just a little silly.

Re: Hmmm... I think we need to fix this somehow
The really stupid move was giving Winn that extension after having a career second half.

Re: Roberts has deal in place with Giants
After the Pierre and Matthews contracts, that is actually a pretty good deal. I still disagree with signing a CF, but value-wise it's a relative bargain.

Re: Roberts has deal in place with Giants
I'm not happy with Giants' offseason as a whole, but I do think this is a good acquisition.  We got Roberts for less than the Dodgers paid Pierre, and Roberts is a much better player.  He hit close to .300 last year, with 13 triples, and 49 stolen bases.  I think he could do very well at Pac Bell Park, or whatever it's called now.

Re: Roberts has deal in place with Giants
It's not a bad deal, it's just not what the Giants need.  But as long as they can trade him later then it shouldn't too big a deal.

I'm a bit confused though..
Does this mean that we have Roberts signed meaning we lose a pick?  The compensation tables don't seem to be up..and when this signing is "official" I guess matters.
I blame F.P. Santangelo, while F.P. somehow blames Kuiper.

Re: I'm a bit confused though..
Roberts is a Type A, so the Padres would normally get the Giants' first round pick and a sandwich pick.  The Giants first round pick, however, is protected, so the Padres would get our second round pick.

Or, it may be that the team is waiting to announce the signing until after the arb deadline, thinking that SD will not chance offering arb.  I doubt that.  Either way, we don't lose our 1st rounder.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Nov 29, 2006 5:01 PM PST up reply actions

So..
If it's announced before the 1st then we lose our 2nd rounder.  Of course why wouldn't the Padres offer arbitration to him, he won't make as much as with the Giants if he accepts.  So either way we're going to lose a pick I'm guessing.

Re: I'm a bit confused though..
Actually, the Padres may just get the Giants' 4th round pick, but more probably, the 3rd.

Aurilia will almost certainly be offered arbitration and signed, and he would get a higher pick than Roberts.  Loretta I don't want to believe is true, but if he's also offered arbitration and signed, then he would rank ahead of both Aurilia and Roberts.

Re: Roberts has deal in place with Giants
If Bonds was signed, I wouldn't care one way or the other about Roberts. With only one MLB proven outfielder on the roster, hell yes, sign Roberts. There's a good chance he'll have a better 2007 than Pierre or Matthews, at literally half the price. The 37 year old 2010 Dave Matthews doesn't thrill me... and the dude cannot play start against LHP- period. But we'll all be wailing for Roberts if the Padres or BoSox swoop in with 3 yrs/19m and steal him away...

I feel the Bochy magnet working, for better or worse:
Roberts, Loretta, Blum, Nevin, Klesko, Piazza?

Humm Baby!

He's put up big numbers at AT&T.  Every time he's played there, it's sold out.

David Weathers is also saying he always wanted to play for Bochy. I wonder if Tony Gwynn Sr. can still hit??
