Good Gravy....

The Giants offered at least $45M to Juan Pierre and $55M to Gary Matthews, Jr., if the rumors are to be believed. That's unbelievable.

Now the San Jose Mercury News is reporting the Giants offered Carlos Lee $112M over six years.

I can't even begin to express how lucky the Giants have been this offseason.

Re: Good Gravy....
The Astros, in addition to signing Lee, also signed Woody Effin Williams to a ....Drum roll, Bells toll, holy moll, down the hole, TWO YEAR 12.5 MILLION EFFIN DINEROS.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning.  This is turning into a better offseason than I thought.  These GMs must have been poisoned by the same nuclear material as the former Russian spy who is also now dead.  RIP Astros.  MUAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA

Re: Good Gravy....
And that is a much, much better deal than the Carlos Lee deal.  Man are they going to take a bath on that one.

Hideous.  In a year or two Lee is going to look like Randy Winn.

Reggie Sanders has a better career OPS+ than Carlos Lee, and he isn't getting fatter by the minute.  Poor Reggie.  He was born too late.

Ellis Burks had a better career OPS+ than Lee had in his best season.

Overrated.  Very overrated.

"In a year or two Lee is going to look like Randy Winn."

At his current rate (of weight gain), in a year or two Lee is going to look like William "The Refrigerator" Perry.

Mighty Casey would have taken Armando Benitez deep.

Re: Good Gravy....
In a year or two, Lee is going to eat El Mando.  As an appetizer. As part of his weight reduction plan.  Which he bought from Livan Hernandez. Who got it from Roseanne Barr. While she was singing Rap Music at a Padre Game. When Rick Sutcliffe fell over drunk out of the broadcast booth.  From drinking Carlos Lee Gravy Whisky.

Re: Good Gravy....
LUCKY is the word for this offseason so far, It's sad because it feels natural to applaude Sabean for not making any bad deals, but he HAS BEEN TRYING TO!  It's only a matter of time until he ruins this team more.  What would it take to land Carl Crawford?  What would everyone be willing to give up if it was possible to do it(i.e. not toe fungus or Benitez, but stuff Tampa Bay might actually be tempted by?)

What I meant to say was
I burned my finger on the brownie pan earlier and it makes my typing weird and apparently makes me post blank comments...

Anyway! I think the McCoven owes Sabean an apology because it has been proven that he has gone for it with these overpriced FAs. We lost out on them but ended up better for it.

Re: Good Gravy....
Hey, Maddux is still out there.  I'm sure a 6 year, $90 million-dollar deal would land him, and he's over 40, so Sabean must be drooling...

Re: Good Gravy....
A one-year, $8m deal would be fine for Maddux.  Plus, if the team is out of it, you can deal him before the deadline.

Re: Good Gravy....
So far the baseball gods have been smiling on us and none of the overpriced overhyped free agents have landed in our arms.  Thank goodness.  Let us hope this streak continues.

Odd
What a weird offseason. Sabean is trying to ruin our longterm future but is foiled at every turn.

Sabean was trying to make a big splash...
...this offseason. He hasn't been able to do it. It is clear, however, that he is under pressure to sign a big name so that the casual fans can feel some optimism that those of us who follow this stuff everyday don't. A commercial with Carlos Lee will sell some more tickets, whereas any marketing agent who's big pitch includes the word "rebuilding" will get canned.
We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

Re: Sabean was trying to make a big splash...
Simple Enough. Sign Maddux like posted above, and Barry.

Here's the pitch
All Star Game, Watch Barry Launch the New Career Home Run Record, First HOF Giant pitcher since Juan Marichal.

It may ring hallow to McCoven, but casual fans of laundry will like it.  Mix in some success by the Young Guns and voila... boku excitement. It could happen just like that. Really.

Re: Sabean was trying to make a big splash...
I didn't mention Carlton because he was only here for 30 innings or so in 1986, and his connection to the Giants is somewhere beneath trivial.  But you are correct technically speaking.

Re: Sabean was trying to make a big splash...
I could be mistaken, but even the casual fan will know that Maddux is over the hill. You can't say the same about the other big name free agents that Sabean has gone after, the signing of who would have otherwise given the fans some optimism heading into this season.
We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

We dodged some bullets, but not because of Sabean
Can we dig a little deeper into GM Psychology And Strategy here and come to a consensus on Sabean?

I say Sabean is a flippin' dork for four reasons:

  1. For setting up a 2006 team which would lose 11 players into the free agent market (is that a record, or close to it?)
  2. For creating a NEED for the Giants to buy heavily in the current free agent class, even though this class offers only Jack Sprat and Wife So Fat.
  3. For flailing and failing to get the top talent from this class, though he tried desperately to overspend.
  4. For going along with Magowan in dissing Barry Bonds, then coming back to Bonds in December (just watch) hat in hand, with a fat contract.
Off with Sabean's head.
