Dave Roberts, maybe.

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=535007

"Reports Friday out of San Francisco indicated that Roberts was prepared to sign a three-year contract with the Giants. He supposedly had narrowed his choices to Milwaukee and San Francisco.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said he had not heard from Roberts' agent, John Boggs, as of Friday afternoon. But Melvin was not surprised to hear that Roberts reportedly had picked the Giants."

As long as it's 18M or less, hurray. I guess.

Kind of hard to get excited about your team signing a platoon leadoff man when you have no 3/4/5 hitters. Roberts is prone to nagging injuries, and Bochy has shown willingness to platoon him, so Linden should still get a decent number of AB's. Especially if Bonds returns.

Wouldn't mind a 3/16m if third year is a team option.

Roberts/Winn in CF/RF = ohmygod.

Re: Dave Roberts, maybe.
Aside from the oft-mentioned problem of moving Winn to CF, Roberts is a terrible CF. Speed can't always make up for bad reads and bad routes and that's the reason Roberts has spent so much time playing LF in his career. He'll make Kenny Lofton look like Willie Mays.

Re: Dave Roberts, maybe.
I don't like the idea of an OF with both Winn and Roberts in it either, but Chris Dial has Roberts as the best LFer in baseball.  There is no way he would suddenly move to CF and suck.

In fact, although Winn is a good fielder, Roberts is better.  Unfortunately, Winn in RF becomes a vortex of offensive suck.

Maybe Sabean is going to trade Winn.  I don't think, though, that he would trade for Burrell and put him in RF.  After the Alou in RF experiment, I am afraid that Sabean has decided to move far in the other direction.

Re: Dave Roberts, maybe.
I should mention, however, that this beats signing Jon Peter or Sarge Jr. any day of the week.

Sob. I want no part of Roberts, and someone needs to hit Sabean over the head and tell him not to give up a draft pick for no good reason. That being said, 3/15 or 3/18 is better than nothing.

Re: Dave Roberts, maybe.
The way this offseason is going, and with the new CBA moving up the acceptance deadline, just about everyone will be offered arbitration. It's not like the Giants weren't going to sign anyone, they would have lost that 2nd round pick anyway.
