Scratch another one off the list...

$100 million, according to ESPN. The Astros are gambling big that Lee can continue to be a capable (underrated defense at this point, but he's going to age) outfielder for the duration of that contract. I wonder what absurd offer from the Giants got mercifully outbid this time!

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
not that I really wanted Lee, but it seems now that the only hitters worth getting right now for the Giants is Bonds and Drew.  This scares me.  With the Phillies getting neither of the big bats they were hoping for, I would seriously doubt that they would be thinking about trading Burrell right now, and just Benitez wouldn't be enough

What on earth are the G-Men supposed to do???

Felix Rodriguez will never be forgiven.

Not contend, like a fair number of us expected them not to do from the start.

Good, no Lee.  This makes me happy, the Giants will be fine, have faith all.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
I initally guessed 6 years $95 million after the Soriano contract, but then thought, no that's too much. Yeah, right.

I'm really happy about the Giants not getting him.  If a three year Roberts contract is the worst we do, I could live with that.

I'm hoping we don't sign a Suppan-Lilly type to a $40 million contract.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
If we sign Dave Roberts to a reasonable contract it'll be worth it just to have signed a player better than Juan Pierre to a fraction of the contract the Dodgers are paying him.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
Although he's a somewhat better player, Roberts is similar to Pierre in a lot of ways.

Speed is his #1 asset.  No power. Is not a good Cfer.  Doesn't take a ton of walks.  And he's old!  But he should be signed for $15 million less, which is the most salient point.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
one main difference that i see is:

juan pierre OBP = .330
Dave Roberts OBP = .360

and dave will sign a shorter and cheaper contract while still putting up the speed numbers

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
Yeah, the ability to get on base is where he has the clear edge, though he's also a high-percentage base-stealer. The short-term contract is what makes him the much better option though.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
As I said, Roberts is the better player, but one problem is his age.  He'll likely sign a contract that will last until he is at least 37.  When he loses his speed, he'll be pretty much useless, as of course Pierre will be (if he isn't already).

But goodness, I forgot Pierre signed for $45 million.  I was thinking of the Giants offer of $33 million. I think Roberts will sign for 3 years between $15-$20 million, which is comical considering he made $2 million last season at the age of 34, and didn't do anything that he hadn't done before.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
Maybe we should make another run at Gathright. I mean, I know he sucks, but he's about 96% the player Juan Pierre is, and he works virtually for free. Wouldn't it be sweet if he got lucky and had a better year than the $45 million man?.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
What about Emil Brown? He is not the CF/speedster Sabean is hard up for, but he had a nice year last year and I doubt it would take much to get him.  Would be a solid 4th outfielder at worst.

He's a serviceable hitter but an absolute butcher with the glove by all accounts.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
Not by all accounts. This guy says he's the best left fielder in the American League: http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/dialed_in/discussion/2006_gold_glove_winners_as_i_see_it/  Dunno what to make of that.

Interesting to compare Brown to Gary Matthews Jr. Neither became a regular till the age of 30, whereupon they both began playing quite well; in fact, their lines for combined 2005-06 are pretty much indistinguishable. One of them now has a $55 million contract, while the other is struggling to hang onto his job with the Kansas City Royals.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
Wow. While I do like defensive statistics, generally if one disagrees strongly with the rest I tend to be a bit doubtful. Maybe he's better than I thought though, and if he's cheap I'm all for getting the guy. I'm just not sure if the Royals have any interest in trading him.

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
Here is a little blurb about Brown from Rotoworld:

Emil Brown-OF- Royals     Nov. 17 - 1:14 pm et

The Royals haven't received any appealing offers for Emil Brown or Reggie Sanders to date.
Given that he's healthy and cheaper, Brown seems likely to have the majority of the value of the two. He seems like the perfect Twins outfielder, and the Orioles, Giants and Reds are some other teams that might view him as a fit. If the Royals fail to deal either, it would pretty much guarantee that Alex Gordon begins next season in Triple-A. The Royals could move one and still put Gordon in the minors, leaving Joey Gathright and Shane Costa to share time.

These are the types of moves Sabean needs to look into.  Also, call Tampa Bay about Wigginton or Cantu, they have a crowded infield with Iwamura coming on board.

Who is next on the list?
So Carlos Lee signs for too much money and too many years. Who is the next FA to have treasures bestowed upon them ?
  •  Drew
  •  Lugo
  •  Huff
  •  Zito
  •  Schmidt
  •  Meche
  •  Lilly
  •  Padilla

Re: Scratch another one off the list...
According to the San Jose Mercury News, the Giants' final offer to Carlos Lee was for $112 million over six years.
They certainly don't feel that way now, but in a few years, the Giants will likely consider themselves fortunate that Lee, Juan Pierre and Gary Matthews Jr. all turned down bloated contracts from the team. Giving Lee almost $19 million per year could have really hurt the franchise going forward.

That's really frigging stupid

Absolutely.  Here is Dan Szymborski's Carlos Lee projection, in Minute Maid park, through 2012.  It isn't pretty.  In fact, it's basically Randy Winn.
