A trade idea for Vernon Wells...
I know the "strength" of the Giants going forward is supposed to be the young pitching, but I think the Giants should spend some of there ~40-45 million dollars in free agent money (assumptions about payroll staying the same apply) on Barry Zito. I know, starting pitching seems to be the only thing the Giants actually have, but signing Zito does one very important thing.
Zito would effectively take Schmidt's spot in the rotation and then Noah Lowry and/or Jonathan Sanchez could be dealt. If the person coming back happens to be Vernon Wells, I think the Giants have to do it. I don't know how many people would be happy trading both Lowry and Sanchez and I don't even know if it would take that - maybe Sanchez/Lowry and Hennessey and/or EME. I know it's a lot for a player with only 1 year left on his current contract, but it would give the Giants a player to build around.
I don't see the Giants going strong after Aramis Ramirez (in fact, I'm resigned to seeing Feliz out there for the next 3 years at too much money), Alfonso Soriano, or Carlos Lee. Also, the Blue Jays will never compete in the AL East if they can't build a pitching staff. I think it's going to take something radical like this for the Giants to approach competitiveness (on the level I want and I'm sure most of you want) in under 4 years. This all assumes a contract extension can be worked out with Wells of course.
I guess the question is: Would you trade (more importantly, would Sabean trade) Lowry and Sanchez for Wells, one of them (only straight up), one of them in a package with Hennessey/Correia, or not?
Either way, I still think signing Zito would be a good idea, despite the 13-15 million it would cost. Zito, Cain, Lowry, Morris, Sanchez sounds fairly impressive.
