Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.

From today's Chronicle:

The Giants appear to be furthest along with third baseman Pedro Feliz, who has not filed for free agency.

Feliz's agent, Mike Arias, said Monday he and the Giants have discussed dollars and years and he hopes they can reach a deal during the 15-day window after the World Series in which the Giants hold exclusive negotiating rights.

"I'm working on it as we speak," Arias said. "My hope is we can close the gap in the next couple of weeks. I'm an eternal optimist, but this game is driven by economics and statistics, and it's not something one side controls."

An attractive but potentially expensive alternative became available Monday when Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez opted out of his contract and filed for free agency.

Figures that Feliz would be first on Sabe's list. Man I hope they're thinking of him in a super utility role, but I have a bad feeling that they aren't. If we sign him to start it better be at less than 4 million per year. Even at that price I would vomit a little bit. At least the article mentiones the Ramirez possibility. We'll see...

I'm sorry, did you say something about Feliz? Has he found another team already? Good for him. Terrific fellow, I'm sure somebody could use him.

Now, back to the Giants: ARAMIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
Re-signing Pedro Feliz Navidad would not make for a joyous holiday season for Giants fans.

Unless it is for the aforementioned super-sub role. But at $3M-$4M per year? For s sub? Wouldn't you rather have Kline or another solid bullpen arm for a year? And even if he's a sub, Feliz will still get his 400 AB's (hacks).

So please, don't vote for Pedro.

I'm with you, I really don't want us to sign the dude at all, but I'm trying to be realistic given the market. I can imagine Feliz getting a 3-4 year contract worth 6 million per year, and that is truly, truly frightening.

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
If Pedro hasn't even filed for FA, it sounds like he really is willing to give the Giants a home-town discount.  I guess signing him woud give Sabean a lot of flexibility since he can play a number of positions.  If Ramirez doesn't declare FA, there really aren't many options at 3B.

Hopefully it would be as a super-sub, but with so many holes, he's probably going to end up starting somewhere...at least for a season.

Would everyone be happy if Feliz is signed to play 1st base and Aramis Ramirez is signed to play 3rd base?  Not going to happen but we could dream.

Not particularly, because then we'd be stuck with a first baseman who's had an OPS+ under 100 every year of his career except for one (which was 102).

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
But in this situation, you move Feliz away from his strongest position. Pedro was one of the best 3rd basemen in the NL last year. Baseball Think Factory has him as the best in the league, in fact. Not that it should carry weight, but statistically, he was incredible.

The best option is to let Pedro walk.

Looks like I picked the wrong year to stop sniffing glue.

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
Problem: Your team got virtually no offensive production out of third base last year (28th in the majors). Solution: A. Find a third baseman who can actually hit B. Re-sign the guy who is mostly responsible for the awful third base offense What would you do? Seriously, if this is going to be the first splash of the offseason, re-signing a basically replacement level third baseman to a longterm and probably lucrative deal... well, I guess I'll wait until it happens before I do anything drastic. But I can tell you that I won't be happy.

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.

I hereby set the over/under on Feliz' contract
to 4 years/$25 million.   And it's only that low because he absolutely tanked the last 2 months.

And if it's true that they are talking before the deadline - there is no earthly way he's not coming back, and no earthly way he's not the starter.  And he's not going to play SS either.

If they were going to try to get him cheap, they would play hardball, no?  Stonewall him, talk about arbitratrion... court the 3B equivalent of Luis Gonzales (who's that... Vinnie Castilla?)

I am beginning to think we should pray for 105 losses as the only way to get Sabean FIRED.

There are two Pedro Feliz'.
  1. The pull every pitch, swing at anything "can't walk off the island" Caribbean hackster
  2. The wait for my pitch, drive it the other way RBI machine
We have seen too much of Pedro #1 and would prefer a lot more of Pedro #2. Here is hoping a manager/coaching change will trumpet in a "new and improved" Pedro Feliz. I can live with a 3yr 15m contract with Pedro #2.

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
I was just looking at his hit charts at sfgiants.com. Pedro had 76 hits at home last year, one of which went to straight away right field. Three or four went to right-center. Of his 30 extra base hits, 27 of them were to left or left center. He slugged .532 when hitting the first pitch, compared to .354 after working the count to 2-0. If every there was a player who "is what he is", it's our boy Pete.

I'm not sure Pedro #2 exists... Pedro #1 knocked in most of those 98 runs last year.

This was highly predictable
Quiet and shy Pedro has known only the Giants in his life -- he alone among the Giants' free agents would be reluctant to test the unknowns of the marketplace.

From another perspective, the minefield that is the free agent class of 2007 looks exceptionally dangerous to Sabean, who has been burned from better classes in 2005 and 2006.

It was a foregone conclusion that the Giants would make a strong play to keep the the adequate though flawed "Feliz Piece" and take their chances elsewhere on the chessboard.

by Moggeee on Oct 31, 2006 9:48 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
Yikes. Sabean only needs to spend 5 minutes looking at stats to see how bad Feliz is. He is an excellent defensive player. Even with him tanking down the stretch, he ended up as the best defensive third baseman in the league according to Chris Dial's Adjusted Zone Rating. Unfortunately, he is absolutely brutal at the plate, and the defense doesn't make up for it. BPro has him at -8.2 VORP in 644 PA, which is worse than any other regular, and as far as I can tell, slightly better than just putting a rocking chair out there. The closest guy with more than 400 PA was Hank Blalock, who had 646 PA and a 0.0 VORP. The next closest was Melvin Mora, who had 705 PA and an 8.9 VORP. I think I could conservatively say that there are probably 50 better options at 3B in the major and minor leagues than Feliz. Even Rich Aurilia would be a LOT better.

My 80/20
From what I understand, Feliz really, really wants to return to the Giants, because he doesn't want to move his family - and if you've ever moved, you will understand that feeling.  So everything will be driven by this want/need/desire of his:  the no free agency filing, the agent "we can do it if we try" PR message, all predicated on letting the Giants know that he's on their team, please play ball with me.  Because Feliz can file for free agency any day up to the first day of being able to talk to free agent, and it won't make a heck of a difference to his free agency bid for a big contract.

Agents speak another language when they publicly speak.   You need to read between the lines to understand what they are actually saying and thinking, because there's a motivation behind everything they say (assuming he is a good agent), it is all part of the negotiation game.  Here's how I dissect the agent-speak.

"My hope is we can close the gap in the next couple of weeks." - the good news here is that there is an actual GAP.  Not "we have a few minor details to hammer out" or "we are close enough that I'm staying here in SF to get it done," but "hope we can close the gap".  Any negotiation where the player wants to stay, you always have to give that hope publicly.

"I'm an eternal optimist, but this game is driven by economics and statistics, and it's not something one side controls." - Well, I disagree, one side does have some control, the hitter holding the bat and swinging and compiling good stats to get a good contract.  As everyone noted, Feliz did not do so good with the stats, and contrary to sentiment here, Sabean is no idiot, he knows how badly Feliz has done.

The good news here is that he's "an eternal optimist."  That means that the two sides are far apart, no matter how badly Feliz wants to stay here.  You don't say you are an eternal optimist if the two sides are very close, you only do that when the two sides are far apart even though his side wants it done.  What need is there to be an optimist about, and particularly an eternal one, if things are close.  This is great news that they are far apart.

I like the "this game is driven by economics and statistics."  No, the game's economics is driven by the players thinking that if they made $X million last year, they deserve $X million + 10%, 20%, 30% the next year, just because.  I see Feliz's agent touting his 98 RBI's ("almost 100!") and his great defense and his 3 consecutive seasons of 20 HRs, when I see him talking about economics and statistics, and that means he has an inflated sense of economic worth.

My 80% likely scenario is that the agent feels the Giants are low-balling his client - hence the crack about economics and statistics - when he has nice stats like the 20+ HRs and 98 RBI, so he puts on the happy face for the public while noting that things are not a slam dunk at the moment.  The disconnect there is that he thinks the Giants fans WANT Feliz back at any price.

The way I see it, the Giants want a cheaper solution for the 1B/3B conundrum, they want to have some starting positions settled before earnestly pursuing free agents.  Hillenbrand is the better hitter and thus expects more money, so they are trying to work out a cheaper deal with Feliz first.  From the sound of the agent, the two sides are apart at the moment and not close enough to assuredly say that a signing should happen before the free agency date.

My 20% fear scenario is that the Giants already made an offer that Feliz is happy with but his agent is doing this to try to get more out of the Giants in negotiations.

But unless the agent's an idiot - which you never know - to intimate publicly that the two sides are far apart, that there is still a gap, when the Giants might have made a fair offer, would be to publicly insult Sabean and most people who do that to Sabean tend to end up outside his Circle of Giants:  Beck, Baker, Aurilia.

I take this news as good news that Feliz (or rather his agent) has probably priced himself out of the Giants immediate plans and that Sabean will move on after his due diligence in trying to get a deal done with Feliz.

Also, interesting implication from the lack of news of Giants negotiating with their free agents during this exclusive period of negotiations is that the Giants appear ready to go with other options other than their free agents for 2007 and beyond.   Durham's agent and Hillenbrand's agent have noted that they had at most, an initial discussion, but it appears that the Giants are prepared to let the market decide how high the salaries will go with the players, and then go from there.

I think part of that was due to wanting to wait for the Giants to pick their new manager - so that he can make suggestions/recommendations into who to retain - but it has been 4 days since Bochy was named manager, so the lack of news about contact on Monday (these articles published on Tuesday, today) could mean that Bochy has given his input and the Giants will let the free agent market determine each players' salary and at that point, the Giants will decide whether to fish or cut bait, or even possibly the Giants won't even pursue the player.

Re: My 80/20
Well done.  I would add a couple things.

One, I translate the agent's "economics and statistics/one side doesn't control them" line as indicating that he has heard the statistics about Feliz over and over and over and over again from Sabean.  I take that as good news.

The second thing is that I don't think it's a situation of Feliz being happy w/whatever the current offer is and the agent trying for a little more.  Agents get 5% of the player's salary, so the fee he gets at $4M/year ($200K) is a nice enough chunk of change that it isn't worth it to risk your client's wishes and best interests dicking around for a $6M/year contract (for a fee of an additional $100K).  I just don't think the agent will risk his sure $200,000 to gamble for an additional $100,000.  So I take it that Feliz really isn't feliz with the current offer.  OR his agent is a brain-dead Caribbean agent swinging at slop knightly.

Re: My 80/20
As everyone noted, Feliz did not do so good with the stats, and contrary to sentiment here, Sabean is no idiot, he knows how badly Feliz has done.

Martin, are you sure?  I'm not saying that Sabean is an idiot, but I am not exactly sure that he "knows how badly Feliz has done."

He likely knows that Feliz makes a lot of outs.  He may also 1) overvalue Feliz's defense, 2) overvalue RBI and HR, and 3) overvalue his positional flexibility, which matters little when he starts at 3B.

I know we are talking about gradations here.  But Sabean, unless he is bluffing, has expressed his anti-advanced-stats sentiments.  Sabean surely doesn't look at Feliz and think that he is the quality of Cabrera or Rolen or Ramirez.  I would say, though, that any desire to bring back Feliz as a starter is a result of overvaluation.

I am not sure that I trust Sabean to make an accurate assessment of Feliz's or any other player's value.  This isn't a problem when you are targeting good players.  You don't really need fine measures of value when you are talking about past years of Barry Bonds, Jason Schmidt, Jeff Kent, or Ellis Burks, for example.  Neither are fine measures needed to see that guys like Calvin Murray or Todd Benzinger or Rick Wilkins weren't the answers.

It's the low middle that hurts you in assessing the future value of players.  Sabean has done a fine job, I think, of collecting cheap players and throwing the hot hand guy out there.  In his first year as GM, he had Wilkins, Marcus Jensen, Damon Berryhill, and Brian Johnson at C.  When you have a ton of cheap guys, you can see who is having a good season and jettison the others without hurting the club.

He has done that with many other players since, and I would rather have him do that than to throw money at guys like Edgardo, Feliz, Matheny, Vizcaino, etc.  Lately, he seems more likely to want veteran stability, and he pays a lot for near-replacement level performance.  That absolutely kills a club, especially when you aren't getting 600+ PA of Bonds quality every year to mask the deficiencies on your club.

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
I'm one of the few who advocated the signing of Feliz and Hillenbrand. I do so because of the rotten crop of free agents, and I'd like to see the Giants spend their cash on top line talent at pitcher (Zito or Matsuzaka) and 2nd (Sorianno.) If Rameriz is truly available, then it would be much, much better to sign Feliz as a backup, for a discounted price, and then go after Rameriz. There are just too many holes to plug this offseason, and any stability at the starting positions (please trade Lance Niekro) is a plus.

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
I would do 2 yrs/$8M for Hilly and 3 yrs/$11M for Feliz, if it was written in their contract that they will never, ever start for the Giants and be happy serving as bench contributors.

Since this will never happen, and each were amongst the worst in MLB at their respective positions, I say cut ties completely.

Trade Benitez & Morris for Burrell.

Sign A. Ramirez.

Sign a catcher: Zaun or B. Molina.

Sign Lilly.

Sign Kline and/or Stanton to one year deals.

Re-sign Bonds, Durham.

If any money left over, sign Schmidt or take a gamble on one of the Japanese imports.

That would be a heck of an off-season, and fit in the Giants pay-roll.

Inseatd, we are talking about Feliz & Hillendbrand, who were a big part of the problem last year. Certainly not part of any solution. Unless they are bench players.

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
I agree with most of that.  To be nitpicky, I would say that Bengie Molina used to be a very good defensive C, but he now sucks.  I would really like to see Benitez and Morris moved to the Phillies for Burrell.  Really, really like it.  But that is unlikely.

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
I have to be slightly nitpicky on Lilly as well.  I know he's a popular choice here, but there's been a lot of issues with shoulder tightness, arm tightness etc the last couple of years.  Quick recap: started ST '05 missing starts with shoulder tendinitis, started '05 on DL, went back on DL in July-Sept. with bicep tendinitus, complained of soreness in back of shoulder when he resumed pitching, complained of shoulder discomfort in March/April of '06, left and missed a couple starts last summer with shoulder tightness/stiff neck. He's never had 200 IP and he's turning 31. Nothing catastrophic but enough warning signs to be wary.

I like the bottom scenario too...
...but why would you want to sign Feliz and Hilly for millions to be bench guys? Or were you more interested in paying them to sign a document that they will never start for the Giants again.

Time to get real
In the new Major League Calculus, the money offered above is bench-level money. No way Feliz or Hillenbrand -- they view themselves as everyday players -- takes that sort of insult.

With free agency as a backdrop, add 50% to those proposed figures and you start to approach reality if you want to sign what are by definition "proven" players in a lean free agent market.

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
Hi North Side,

Molina is certainly no gold glove candidate, but is a step up defensively from Alphonszo. And a .284 .319 .467 line last year with 19 homers to boot would look pretty good out of the 7 or 8 hole in the line up. All for around $4.5M. I should also note the hitting averages are below career levels.

Morris & Benitez for Burrell might sound crazy, but its approx. $15M in salary for $15M in salary, Burrell is on the block, and the Phillies are desperate for pitcing... (who isn't)

Humm Baby!

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
I want no part whatsoever of Feliz. None. He's not a good player, who's going into his decline phase, from what wasn't a peak to begin with. He's shown no ability to learn - at all. Your average 4A 3b is likely to outhit Feliz next year - 98 RBI be damned.

RUN AWAY!
Sabean should not even be entertaining the thought of making Pedro an offer of anything.  Not even a low ball offer is allowed, he might take you up on it.  Pedro should be shown the door and a can of pepper spray if he attempts to enter any Giants facility.  Defense be damned, this piece of monkey crap has to go.  We deserve better than 600 ABs from Pedro.
Please do not resign Fleas!

Re: Ugh. Feliz. Ewwww.
The more that comes out of the executive offices at Payphone Park, the more convinced I am that Magowan is running this thing, and Sabaen is being reduced to manservant status.  No GM in their right mind with Barry Bonds about to take a walk, pimps for the likes of Luis Gonzalez, Shea Hindenburg, Gary Matthews Jr. and Pedro Feliz as a priority.
