Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash

Just now hitting the news wires -- the small plane that crashed into that building in NYC was piloted by Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle.

Very shocking news; my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.  I remember Thurman Munson, and now this!

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
Wow, saw earlier in the day that the plane was registered to Lidle, had no idea he was on board.  Tragic.

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
It really is tragic for everyone: baseball, his family, the people in the building ,and, on the ground.

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
This is the most bizarre turn of events. I didn't like Cory Lidle, but I certainly feel bad something like this would happen.

RIP Corey Lidle
Somehow this is all strangely symbolic of the Yankees postseason crash.

What?  Too soon?

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
Talk about fate: If he wasn't traded by the Phillies this summmer, if the Yankees are still playing in the playoffs, this probably would not have happened.

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
Word is that his home airfield was Teterboro Airport in NJ anyway, so the trade may not have mattered.

RIP Cory, and my best to his family and friends.

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
Jesus, I'm listening to a Yankees beat reporter on 1010WINS and he was saying that Lidle, while cleaning out his locker at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, was just talking to him and other beat reporters about flying his own plane and how safe it was and he was talking about flying home this week.  Cripes.  :(

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
It's a sad day for baseball.  Is there evidence of malfunction on the plane?  Or poor visibility?  I'm not a pilot, but it seems like it'd be pretty hard to hit a building.

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
A lot of the articles I've read say it's too early to determine if the plane malfunctioned or what was going on before the crash.

I read a witness told reporters the plane seemed unstable or was flying weird.  I also read that the sky was overcast in NYC.

Anyone else read anything different or in addition to this?

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
Visibility was fine; there are reports of a mayday before he crashed, so mechanical problems seem likely.

Insert "he couldn't hit the side of a barn, but he could hit the side of building" joke here.

sorry

Re: Cory Lidle Killed In Plane Crash
I read one site that said Lidle was a high school teamate of Jason Giambi. He is also a realtive of Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat.

A sad day
I have on occasion suggested putting out a contract kill on Steve Finley, or hoping that Omar Vizquel's wallabies eat Pedro Feliz alive. But I was never serious. And this puts things in perspective.

Jose Mesa is the only exception to the baseball players should not be killed even if they make you angry rule.

Hey, Guys, no jokes. This is serious.
How do we get Benitez a pilot's license?

You guys are awful and I am a horrible monster for having laughed. I pray for death.

Re: It won't be easy...
It's only awful in the specific context of this thread. It should be understood that Mayor and I were both simply making jokes at the expense of Armando Benitez for the sake of some levity in the midst of a somewhat grim mood, and it's unfortunate circumstance that it has to reflect in any way on the event in question if only by mere association.

I would like to say that I, and I presume though cannot be so bold as to assert that Mayor, both hold the utmost respect for the memory of the departed and in no ways wish to take away from that.

But in the midst of grief, even if it is not directly our own, it is necessary to laugh in order to maintain a bearable human perspective.

So I posit that we are far from awful. That we are, in fact, just fine.

I'm with Antinous. We are delplorable, and should pray for Death.

But not before we get our pitching problems solved.

Re: I really like the dugout more and more...
I'm waiting for the first jackass to blame this on A-Rod, somehow.  "If only A-Rod wasn't such a choker, Cory Lidle would still be alive today."  Some professional sports idiot is going to say that, and mean it too.  Just wait.

In other news, the building which Lidle's plane hit was, until today, where Manny Acta lived!  Freaky.

That was maybe one of the best dugouts ever. I am not ashamed to admit that it made me tear up a bit at the end (though I'm a girl, so I guess I'm entitled to.)

Re: I really like the dugout more and more...
I got really sad when I heard his wife and son were on a cross-country flight with no idea what had happened.  Apparently, a priest was waiting for them as they got off the plane to share the bad news.

His dad learned about it on the news.
