Hypothetical Trade

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/john_donovan/01/27/team.needs/index.html .

It says here that the Champs need a centerfielder. How about Finley and Schmidt for Contreras and Brandon McCarthy? I'm not sure that Sox would give up a starter and there best prospect for an arguably better starter and an old OF, but they might just be running all crazy on a Championship defense binge and be willing to do anything.

Re: Hypothetical Trade
I thought they were sliding Podsednidnkn over to center, or starting Brian Anderson in center?

I would certainly do that trade, but I'd gather Sabean would not. Finley is nice depth, but I trust McCarthy to become something and be cheap more than I do Schmidt to both rebound and stay with us at a cost effective price.

Re: Hypothetical Trade
that could be either a terrific or awful one for the Giants - not because of McCarthy's potential, but because of what Schmidt is capable of being, which is to say almost anything. If we did this we could be giving up one of the top pitchers in baseball or an injured and mediocre arm. Because this trade almost certainly won't happen, though, I'm hoping for the former.

Re: Hypothetical Trade
Interesting thing is that they were willing to give up McCarthy, Contreras and Anderson for Schmidt alone last year but Sabean didn't pull the trigger (at least according to Chicago newspapers). If true, that non-trade could be one of Sabeans worst moves.

Re: Hypothetical Trade
Everything I've heard the CF job is Brian Anderson's to lose and they're probably smart to give it to him at this point.

Re: Hypothetical Trade
I'd love Contreas and/or McCarthy, but not at the expense of Schmidt. McCarthy may strengthen the club for years to come, but for this year the Giants need Schmidt and every other starter not named Hennessey. If they're going to trade any starter they had better get a better one in return. With Schmidt's upside that's pretty hard to do.

Re: Hypothetical Trade
As tantalizing as Brandon McCarthy is, I think the last year of Bonds with the Giants is not the time to be trading the likes of Schmidt.  Not for any prospect.
