Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Open Gameday Thread, 9/22

I'd love it if the Giants were to win the division, but I'm strangely content for them to just keep winning, regardless of how the Padres do. It's just something we haven't had in large doses this year.

Great story on Taschner + Bonds
I'm sure other people comb through the article links on the ESPN sidebar, but if not:

Making his mark: Taschner getting comfortable with major leagues

Nice piece on Agent Jack Taschner.
Thanks. After reading it I feel I know a little bit about him. That's rare in most short sports articles. Divorce is especially tough with a young child involved. Must be hard to keep his mind on craft all the time.

I'm happy that they're winning too.
And I have (actually a week or so ago) stopped listening to people who point out that we have to go x-x with the Dads going x-x to catch up.  I just want us to be within 4 when we head to SD.  At that point it's in the Giants' hands, win the rest and they ensure a tiebreaker game.

Here's a question though:  Will you be disappointed if Barry passes the Babe on the road if it means we have a better chance at the playoffs?  I'd like to say team wins are more important, but I'd sure love to see him hit 714 and 715.  Maybe during the snake series to put us in the playoffs?  Oh what a dream that would be.

Passing the Babe is nothing....
Doesn't give him anything record wise so I don't think it's really a big thing.  Just like 660 and 700, it's just another "milestone" that doesn't matter until he gets to 756.
Man: What they need is a front office. Jerry: But you gotta like their chances. .....Not so much this year.....

I disagree greatly
This is Babe Ruth, the greatest HR hitter in baseball history (Aaron has the most but was not the greatest;  not Ruth's fault his teams wasn't smart enough to start playing him regularly at a position, else he would be so far ahead, even ahead of Sadaharu Oh), the best LHH in baseball history (though Ted Williams is probably a close second out of retired players, he would have had approximately 714 had he not been drafted into the wars), probably still the best known icon in baseball, bar none.

Bonds is the greatest hitter of his era, certainly the best LHH of his era, one of the best known icon of his era.  That both generate a lot of buzz, particularly since Bonds would then be the LHH who has hit the most MLB homers.

What might make it nothing is the Balco steroid scandal that hangs over his head.  The general public might be turned off by the spectacle of a "known" cheater passing up a legitimate record.

But the passing of an icon like Babe Ruth is big stuff, look at the news and outrage generated when Bonds was misquoted about what he said about "wiping" out the Babe out of the record book.  I think there was not as much made of the passing of Willie Mays because Barry did not want to show up his Godfather and show some respect for him.  And 700 is just a number, rare yes, but it was just a turn of the odometer, not passing by a record number with historical meaning beyond the fact that he was only the third one to reach it.

In a weird way
the Giants seem to be playing right now like there's no pressure on them to win the division and that catching the Pads is a 'nice to have' on their to-do list. Almost as if they had figured their season was over a month ago, around the time Grip and Woody and Tucker were released and the 'kids' started playing more. And now that Bonds has come back with such force, they've kind of stumbled back into the race. But I don't sense that any of them are playing tight, with the possible exception of Benitez. Maybe that's why they've played so well recently.

Speaking of Bonds, Skip Bayless trashes him yet again on ESPN.com this morning, which proves nothing more than that Skip Bayless is a huge turd and a worthless hack.

Alou
is an incredible, incredible man

by Brother Bummer on Sep 22, 2005 3:40 PM PDT reply actions

Stop that.
Be like Kitspool -- switch to Gameday at www.sfgiants.com today!

You won't see the plays, but you will read about them the same day they happen.

Do what I did!
It's the biggest no-brainer in the history of mankind.

Homerun Jesus...
...won't pinch-hit for another two innings at least, I'm afraid.

by Skaldheim on Sep 22, 2005 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Stating the Obvious:
The Giants are a different team with Bonds in the lineup.

Kind of, well, flat and less interesting.

by Running on Sep 22, 2005 3:51 PM PDT reply actions

Or:
"I can't believe I just gave up a double to Martin Short."

by Kitspool on Sep 22, 2005 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

UNFUCKING REAL
WHAT DID I JUST SAY???

god i hate alou

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 3:57 PM PDT reply actions

It's not really his fault though
when the offense is COMPLETELY FUCKING FEEBLE!!!!

by Lipssan1 on Sep 22, 2005 3:58 PM PDT reply actions

All it takes is one run
in this ballpark, and without Bonds...

by Running on Sep 22, 2005 3:59 PM PDT reply actions

Warming up in the bullpen:
Scott Eyre, using the prosthetic arm he'll be wearing in 2006.

by Kitspool on Sep 22, 2005 3:59 PM PDT reply actions

Goofus is not hating Tomko right now
1 run through 6 1/3 isn't bad at all.  How about some damn run support?  Alfonso?

by Goofus on Sep 22, 2005 3:59 PM PDT reply actions

every scoreless inning
that we get from tomko is just gravy. it's bound to bite us in the ass sometime!

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 3:59 PM PDT reply actions

I came in late:
I take it Barry didn't start, right?  We can still put him in, right?

by Lorrimer on Sep 22, 2005 4:00 PM PDT reply actions

SITUATION TOMKO
Dispatch Special Agent Taschner immediately.

by Skaldheim on Sep 22, 2005 4:00 PM PDT reply actions

unreal
deivi cruz coming to bite us in the ass, that's just fucking precious

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:01 PM PDT reply actions

Now Alou takes him out
after the damage is done.

Why not pinch hit for him back at the top of the inning (Bruins post)

by Running on Sep 22, 2005 4:02 PM PDT reply actions

THANK YOU
god any freaking yahoo or monkey can manage this team better than this senile bastard.

please fire him and hire bob brenley!!!

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

it's almost like
we don't want to win, giving away games like this.

the rockies did their part man.

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:06 PM PDT reply actions

Tomko came back strong these last few outtings
but was it rest and pride? Luck and good D got him out of jams in this game. It was over after his 7th inning / pitch count 90-100, Tough call for mgmt. in the off season

by Running on Sep 22, 2005 4:08 PM PDT reply actions

no way i want this guy back next year
it should be an absolute no brainer that we do not resign him. he's proven to be a headcase and a guy that cannot pitch out of a jam. we don't need this kind of aggravation, no matter how cheap he may be.

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd be a headcase, too
with the lack of run support Tomko's received most of the season.

On the other hand, having a hot wife like Mrs. Tomko would help me clear my head. So to speak.

by Kitspool on Sep 22, 2005 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

come on guys
we still believe!!!!! (i think?)

LET'S GO GIANTS!!!

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:17 PM PDT reply actions

HOW THE FUCK
DO YOU SWING AT THE FIRST PITCH? ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

YOU ARE DOWN 2 RUNS! TAKE A PITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:22 PM PDT reply actions

I hate these pseudo morning radio
crap from NBC. Makes me NOT want to watch these shows. These ads imply that some people actually ENJOY morning talk shows with some chick addicted to giggling.

Does Felipe
know his roster expanded to 40 men on September 1st? Pinch hitters? Anyone? Bueller?

by Kitspool on Sep 22, 2005 4:23 PM PDT reply actions

alou should be fired
for constructing that lineup he has there today. how the hell is niekro, who has been in two month slump, hitting THIRD?!?!

too bad sabean has a hard on for alou, so firing him is not gonna happen. hopefully peter magowan has the balls to make the call.

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:24 PM PDT reply actions

I don't like the lineup
But in all honesty, look at the players. Shuffling the order is rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic. A new manager would be lipstick on a pig - at least as far as the offense goes.

by Salemicus on Sep 22, 2005 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, good
Fonzie's at bat. We're, um, saved.

by Kitspool on Sep 22, 2005 4:33 PM PDT reply actions

Unbelievable.
Four hits.  Four walks.  No runs.

by Skaldheim on Sep 22, 2005 4:33 PM PDT reply actions

Felipe's Inner Monologue
"Gosh, this really IS a pitcher's park. Not that my lineup sucked. Or that my in-game managing was lame."

by Kitspool on Sep 22, 2005 4:35 PM PDT reply actions

I think Felipe's INMO is
a series of clicks and buzzes

by paleepalou on Sep 22, 2005 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

HAHAHAH
i just laughed out loud at that one....hahaha

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah
we sure couldn't have used that win. nope.

people are dancing in the san diego dugout right now.

"we really are just giving the division to the giants...but they just don't want it i guess"

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:35 PM PDT reply actions

1-2-3 hitters
Collectively 0-12, 0 BB, 6 Ks. That's supandingly bad.

by Salemicus on Sep 22, 2005 4:36 PM PDT reply actions

barry bonds should be MVP
without him, this team looks like dogshit.
with him, this team looks like world beaters.

he is the true definition of the award, "most valuable player"

there is not one living player that is more valuable to his team than barry

by Bruins17 on Sep 22, 2005 4:42 PM PDT reply actions

Fonzie's Line was:
AB 3
R 0
H 0
RBI 0
BB 0
K 0
LOB 4
Which is kind of hard to do when you think about it...

by Running on Sep 22, 2005 4:46 PM PDT reply actions

Oops plus,
1 runner left in scoring position
1 GIDP

by Running on Sep 22, 2005 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Not 2?
I thought he left runners on 1st and 2nd twice.

by Goofus on Sep 23, 2005 8:35 AM PDT up reply actions
