Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

From Jim Callis' Ask BA Column

"Foppert could be a real coup. He hasn't bounced all the way back from Tommy John surgery in September 2003, but before he got hurt he was the game's best pitching prospect. The track record for recovery from that operation is very good, and Foppert is still just 25. If he regains the mid-90s fastball, hard slider and splitter he once had, look out. I'm still trying to figure out how Seattle got Foppert and a potential starting catcher who at worst is a good backup (Torrealba) for a mediocre big leaguer like Winn."

The trade made no sense
And I'm glad to see others pointing this out.

Foppert had enough promise and experience to make him worth keeping around - not exactly like we've got a great rotation anyhow. And Winn brings us nothing useful in return. Just sad.

Seattle Gambled
Maybe it turns out better for them, maybe it doesn't, but it is going to take a while before you can measure who "won" this trade.  But, if Foppert, Williams, Liriano and Bonser become what could have been even half a rotation, or if one of them becomes a dominant starter, it is going to suck watching those guys succeed elsewhere.  Might cost Sabean a lot of reputation.

Wrong
We can say who "won" this trade--the Mariners did.  It doesn't matter if Yorvit and Jesse never do anything for the Mariners because Winn will never do anything for us.  He could hit .420 the rest of the season and it won't matter because we ain't going to the playoffs.

I wish and hope and pray that the Giants become serious sellers in August.  I have no faith that we actually will but so be it.

What about next year?
It's obvious they want to make one last run with Bonds next year.  Winn gives the Giants a better chance at that.  Yeah, the Winn trade doesn't address the team's most pressing need but Foppert and Torrealba weren't going to help next year anyway.

The problem is...
...Winn will make $5M that should be spent on a starting pitcher. I think he's an improvement over Ellison, but with little power, a mediocre walk rate, shaky reads, and a below-average arm, is he a $5M upgrade?

I'd be willing to bet
that Foppert's a more effective starter for Seattle next year than somebody who's in the Giants rotation.  Ridiculously, a week later comes word that the Giants are going with youth for the rest of the season.  Simply put, Kevin Correia is NOT as good a potential starter as Foppert or Williams, but he's what we're stuck with because of two extremely questionable deals (and, oh yeah, then there's Liriano who will almost surely be pitching in the AL wild card race before the season's over).

Don't worry...
...this week's plan won't last more than a week or two.  The other plans haven't.

So...
...that would be a relatively loose definition of the word "plan", huh?
