Good thing
That we signed this dude for another year

by xanthan on Aug 19, 2005 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Signed!
You didn't have to bully me. Heck, I'll sign it twice.

Heres a good question for Giants fans, who would you get to replace Felipe thats currently available?

Crazy Crab?
I too tire of breakfast meal brains doing crazy things with the bullpen.

Even George W. Bush's managing of this country....
Has been better than Felipe Alou's managing of this ballclub.

managers
Bud Black comes to mind, or possibly Brenly.

by bigfly71 on Aug 19, 2005 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions

First choice
is Davey Johnson

Second choice, among the currently available, is Joe Maddon of the Angels, who I've read is super-organized, ultra-methodical, and otherwise perfectly qualified. I'd like to bring some of the Angels' study methods to this team.

how about Tracy if he bolts the dogs?
I'd be somewhat Ok w/ brenly, although he's never shown himself to be much of a tactician

i have supported alou
all year....until the krug incident

and after tonite, i cannot support even his on field antics

walk was hitting 89 on his fast ball....there is something wrong with his arm....hes gassed

yet alou went to matchups in the 8th....limiting what he could do in the 9th

everytime he has gone to matchups we lose

after the dinger, walk shouldve been lifted

its an ez call, bring in someone fresh with no one on

yup....alou doesnt have it anymore....hes more interested in getting talk show hosts fired

by bacci40 on Aug 19, 2005 8:56 PM PDT reply actions

This would seem to prove your point
Divisional troubles: Alou called the National League West a "Bermuda Triangle" and an aberration, with no definite answers why every team is currently below .500.

"It's a shame," he said. "There are so many good players ... unless there's a manager like me with Cream of Wheat for brains. It's been a strange year."

With the West clubs facing each other over the final month, Alou believes no team will really take charge.

by bigfly71 on Aug 19, 2005 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

But seriously,
going back to xanthan's question, who would you want to actually replace felipe?

by Larson2042 on Aug 19, 2005 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

I posted
Bud Black and Bob Brenly.

What's wrong
With just the bench coach?  Ron Wotus has managed games before when Alou was away.

Stick Kruk and Kuip in the dugout!

We just witnessed a microcosm of everything that is wrong with this team.

Slow, over-the-hill players.
Horrible, unbelievably horrible managing.
Bullpen blowing chunks.
Horrible managing of the bullpen.
The worst personnel decision of a year that has seen many stupifyingly terrible personnel decisions.

Method to his madness!
Felipe's quoted on ESPN: "We have some guys here that have been overworked. The closer's arm, you could see all of those pitches he threw and he didn't throw one quality pitch."

I read that and suddenly I understood! His strategy is to completely blow out Walker's arm, so he'll have to go on the DL, so they can call up some other kid whose arm isn't overworked...yet.

So...
He overworks someone for a season, they go on the DL, they suck next year, and we designate for assignment.  (See Herges, Brower)

Christiansen Quote
Heh. I don't think the bullpen are thrilled with Alou either. The section below comes from the Chron writeup about the game.

Oh, and I'm all for firing Alou...

-----

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/08/20/GIANTS.TMP

"We have some guys here who have been overworked," Alou said, "whose arms are tired."

Christiansen didn't take the comment lightly.

"Really?" he asked. "He's just now figuring it out?"

Alou has gone to the bullpen 389 times this year, tops in the majors. Scott Eyre appeared in his 65th game, also tops in the majors. Afterward, Alou said he's going to give Tyler Walker a few days off because the closer seemed drained.

He's not the only one.

"Of course our arms are weary," Christiansen said. "We're getting run through like a turnstile."

by OrangePalm on Aug 20, 2005 3:36 AM PDT reply actions

He's Destroying Arms
and has to go.  Hire Brenly.

by LeMaster on Aug 20, 2005 7:30 AM PDT reply actions

Count me in on the Brenley camp.
I put his name in a couple of posts last week and will stick with it here.  I'm a little surprised that he hasn't had a shot recently.  Phillip seems to display rather openly "how" he manages.  If we're going to have an aging roster (which, by the way, I completely disagree with) then we need a manager capable of flexibility, giving guys days off, using the whole roster regularly.  We don't need a guy who, well, manages, like he did in that Cubs game a few weeks back.  Why?  It's counterproductive and, frankly, it's boring to watch.

Pretty good road trip though...

I would rather
hire a new manager (preferably one who has succeeded in the minor league ranks) than a retread
Insert sarcastic "witticism" here

by kenshin1 on Aug 20, 2005 7:54 AM PDT up reply actions

no brenley
why does anyone want brenley?

had he not had schill and the unit, he never would have gone to the ws

hes never proven anything at the big league level, and his on field moves could be compared to both alou's and the doofus one

theres a reason hes back in the booth and not managing now....he doesnt have the desire, and no one in their right mind wants him

it would be a disaster if brenley took over this team

fact is, there are plenty of coaches in the org who can take over for alou

but if brenley becomes the manageer....dont say i didnt warn ya

by bacci40 on Aug 20, 2005 7:56 AM PDT reply actions

Absolutely...
People, remember that in 2001, the D-Backs DOMINATED in the WS. The Yanks hit something like .190, and Brenley still did everything he could to give the Series away. There's a reason why he hasn't been hired since leaving Arizona, despite his age and supposed success.

by David A. Arnott on Aug 20, 2005 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay...
...alright, I think that my anti-Caribbean bias is taking hold of me.  I can't help but be pulled toward the lunatic fringe.  I'm for someone new, someone old, someone fat, someone skinny.  I'm just for someone who knows what he's doing and is somewhat flexible.  Maybe Brenly isn't the right choice, but the fact that he made decisions a certain way in 2001 doesn't mean that he'd do the same thing now.  That's not really a reason not to have him as a manager in the future.  Hell, there are a lot of bad managers out there right now.

On another note, how about Joe Torre once he's fired from the Yankees?  On another note (part 2), who's Maddon and what do the readers here know about him?

Give Wotus a shot
Before he went to the big club as a coach he was a very successful manager in our minor league system.  Why not give him a shot - he has certainly had plenty of years studying big league players and he can't do any worse that old man Alou.

Heard he wants to make a comeback for a few years.  Plus he has horrible experience with Bonds, which I guess is better than no experience.

wait
He did pitch for us remember.  Doesn't that get him of the hook for being a dodger?

by bigfly71 on Aug 20, 2005 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I love you too
C'mon, think about it.  Does anyone on the Giants, aside from Moises, look like they enjoy playing for Alou?  You know the pitchers can't stand him.  The hitters can't get in a rhythm because Alou uses 162 different batting orders a season.

With Dusty, the Giants loved playing for him.  This is going to sound very old school, but things like that matter.  Dusty likes people to be comfortable, which helps them worry only about playing well.

Dusty's having a rougher time in Chicago because Dusty is not a Chicago kind of guy.  Cubs fans are insane, and the press is worse.  If I were him, I'd welcome a chance to go back to San Francisco.  Krueger's gone, and the press here are kittens compared to the ones in Chicago.

It's gotten to the point where Dusty Baker is now an underrated manager.  Yes, I mean underrated by all of you.

Thus I throw down my gauntlet.

by Skaldheim on Aug 22, 2005 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm sorry...
but have you noticed that he's slowly going insane? He'd insist on bringing Neifi(!) back with him and batting him leadoff.

by David A. Arnott on Aug 20, 2005 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions

How would you feel...
Having to watch Texas' pitching staff everyday?  I think you would go insane yourself.  How about Joe Girardi?  Isn't he a bench coach for the Yanks, if I have my old Yankee catchers correctly.  I hear he is supposed to be a "great" manager, just a few years away, according to the experts.  Gives us just enough time to get rid of Felipe, Sabes and everyone else associated with this horrid club.  Too bad Bonds would be gone by then though...

by rod beck on Aug 20, 2005 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Good idea
While I think I would make a fine manager myself, my vote is for finding a way to get Atherton, CA native Bob Melvin.  Maybe the Mariners would take Alfonzo in exchange for Melvin.

Coming back to reality, I would promote a minor league coach or Ron Wotus.

by irwin on Aug 20, 2005 9:53 PM PDT reply actions

Pretty sure
the Mariners canned Melvin after 2 bad seasons.  Now he is managing the DimeBags to Hidden Ball Tricks.  No Thanks.

Fire the old man
Do we know how long his contract is for?

by Brother Bummer on Aug 21, 2005 6:20 PM PDT reply actions

One way that might convince him to leave
would be to ship his son off to someone else.  Perhaps for starting pitching?

by Larson2042 on Aug 21, 2005 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions

True
And I would also like to see Bonds and Alou, make some teams pay for all those rubber chickens for once.

Fire Felipe
Ron Wotus can fill his roll.

Matheny to Bench Coach. Hey, he's already on contract, right?
