minor lines, 7/3/05
AAA: Fresno lost to Tucson 7-6
Fresno: 1B Mike Cervenak: 3 for 5, HR, 2B
Fresno: P Brad Hennessey: 2 for 2, 2B, SH
Cervenak started the year hitting primarily singles. Of his 99 hits, he now has 19 doubles, 1 triple and 10 homers. That's quite an improvement considering how few XBH he had during April. Fresno had no walks, and Hennessey was the only other hitter with an XBH.
Fresno: RHP Brad Hennessey: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
Fresno: David Lee: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 0 HR
A decent game for Hennessey. His Fresno ERA is now 5.19. David Lee made his debut with the Giants' organization with a blown save after pitching previously this year with the Norfolk Tides (the Mets' AAA team).
AA: Norwich defeated Portland 7-6 (11 innings)
Norwich: SS Tim Hutting: 2 for 4, 3 BB, SB
Norwich: RF Dan Ortmeier: 1 for 6, HR, BB, SB, K
Norwich: CF Carlos Valderrama: 3 for 6, SB, 2 K
Norwich: 1B Tyler von Schell: 3 for 5, 2B, BB, K, CS
Norwich: LF Fred Lewis: 0 for 2, 4 BB, SB, E
Hutting has not been a regular in the lineup recently, but he was the leadoff hitter today, and a really good OBP game. Ortmeier with his 15th HR and 20th SB as his AVG drops to .260. Lewis now has 18 steals but 9 errors. Von Schell is still hitting just .228, well behind Valderrama's team-leading .315.
Norwich: RHP James Garcia: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 HR
Norwich: LHP Erick Threets: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 0 HR
Norwich: RHP Bily Sadler: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 0 HR
Garcia has a 5.24 ERA. Does anyone still think he is a prospect? He now has 90 H, 22 BB and 60 K in 68.2 IP, along with 15 HR. The K/IP is good, but the H/IP and HR/IP rates are just way too high. Threets obviously had control issues. He now has 34 H, 26 BB and 32 K in 37.0 IP this year. I think this is Sadler's longest pro appearance ever, even longer than any of his starts last year.
A+: San Jose lost to Modesto 4-1
San Jose: 2B Derin McMains: 2 for 4, E
San Jose: SS Kevin Frandsen: 0 for 2, BB, GiDP
San Jose C Brian Munhall: 1 for 3, 2B
McMains was the only Little Giant to reach base safely twice. He is hitting .343. What does he have to do to be promoted to the upper minors again? Frandsen did not have a hit, but he did have the team's only walk. Munhall had the team's only XBH.
San Jose: RHP Jesse Floyd: 7.0+ IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 0 HR
San Jose: LHP Jon Coutlangus: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0 HR
San Jose: RHP Joe Bateman: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 0 HR
A truly all-star performance from Jesse Floyd. Another dominant relief appearance from Coutlangus. Can he string together a few more of these? Are Cal League hitters figuring Bateman out?
A-: Augusta's home game versus Kannapolis was postponed by rain
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Eugene 11-4
Salem-Keizer: 2B Mark Minicozzi: 3 for 6
Salem-Keizer: 3B Pablo Sandoval: 2 for 2, 2B, BB, 2 HBP
Salem-Keizer: 1B Will Thompson: 3 for 5, 2B, K
Salem-Keizer: C Henry Gutierrez: 2 for 5, 2 2B
Minicozzi raises his AVG to just .220. Along with Mike Mooney, Sandoval and Thompson entered the night among the NWL's top 6 hitters for average. Gutierrez is batting just .209 so far but did double his XBH total.
Salem-Keizer: RHP Matt Raguse: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 0 HR
Salem-Keizer: RHP Joey Martinez: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 0 HR
Raguse's ERA is now 4.50. Martinez has a very strong relief apperance, lowering his ERA to 1.59. He now has 8 H, 3 BB and 12 K in 11.1 IP.
R: Giants defeated Mariners 3-2
Scottsdale: RF Ariel Nunez: 1 for 2, 2B, BB, SB, SH, K
Scottsdale: C Greg McCarthy: 2 for 3, HR
Once again, Nunez's name stands out in the box score. McCarthy with his first pro HR, and he is now hitting .308.
Scottsdale: Chris Nieto: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 0 HR
Scottsdale: Waldrip Joaquin: 3.0 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 0 HR
Nieto with a very impressive line, maintaining his 0.00 ERA. Joaquin has yet to find himself as his ERA remains high at 7.36.

Giants sign Copeland?
Not only on the roster
Frandsen vs McMains
Ritzo raved about Frandsen and predicted that he will be in the big leagues a lot sooner than we all think.
Pablo Sandoval
BA had him rated quite highly. He's a stocky swich hitter who played catcher last year in AZL. I wonder why he was switched to 3B? A strong SH catcher is a great commodity to have. Maybe they thought there was less chance of injury and more opportunity to develop his hitting at 3B. Great hitters at 3B aren't all that easy to find either. Still, he seemed to have great potential as a catching prospect.
