Around SBN: Terry Collins, David Wright, And The Mets/Brewers Kerfuffle

Gamesday Open Thread, 6/5

And so it shall be
on the fifth year of the second millenium
Peasants of a coastal village of fog
shall bang their heads on a coffee table until their temples bleed.

This will go on, like, every day or something.
Especially from April to October.

But on the sixth month of this year,
the peasants shall make their heads bleed,
and do it twice in one day.

It shall hurt.

From "Nostradamn He's Good!: The Lost Prophecies of Nostradamus"

Is there a possibility of two Jason Christiansen sightings today? Rapture!

OK, point yours.  I try not to spend too much time thinking about who has been worst.  All those other guys are pitchers, though, and Tucker doesn't really play all that much so I don't notice him that much.  Also Tucker has a lot of residual good feelings in the back of my mind for those two late-inning slams against the Rocks.

For those who care
John Sickels has been running a mock draft for his readers to participate in at minorleagueball.com. As you probably know, the Giants don't pick until the back end of the 4th and 5th rounds, so it's probably just noise from our point of view. But for what it's worth, this is what the Giants guys there picked:

4th: Anthony Vavaro RHP St. Johns
Utterly dominant strikeout pitcher in college but 6 foot nothing. Very "Moneyball" selection.

5th: Travis Wood LHP Bryant HS,
Wood is highly regarded but would be tough to sign (he has committed to Arkansas). Explosive fastball, change, curve, high ceiling.

Not just because it's cool, but because you don't have to break stride.

by Salemicus on Jun 5, 2005 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Common Retort...
Then why don't sprinters dive as they cross the finish line? If it was faster, wouldn't a track be set up to allow for diving? It slows you down because you're dragging on the ground instead of going full speed all the way through the base. Good baserunners don't need to break stride to hit the base at a dead sprint.

by David A. Arnott on Jun 5, 2005 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it's been established...
that Vizquel does it not because he thinks it's faster but because he thinks it fools the umpire.

by non sequitur on Jun 5, 2005 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

But sprinters are just trying to cross a line
That goes from the ground upwards to the sky. Baserunners need to touch a specific spot.

Did you see the way Snow ran to first? He would have touched the base quicker if he'd slid, because his stride didn't quite match with the base. And if the runner is concentrating on matching his stride, it can slow him down.

Ideally, yes, you'd be able to hit it at a dead sprint. But if you're not confident in that, slide.

No.
My point is that if a player can't correct the hole, then it's better to slide than to get thrown out. Correct the hole if you can.

by Salemicus on Jun 5, 2005 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

At first base...
You can think of it as running through a specific point. Your foot just has to hit the a big square in your lane. Guys slide into other bases because it's the quickest way to slow down in a short period of time. The impetus is to STAY on the bag, whereas at first base you're allowed to run through it. There, there's no impetus to slow down at all. So why should you, unless trying to avoid a tag?
As for the "he's always done it that way" argument, I remember reading the Houston Astros have an anti-headfirst slide policy in their minor leagues. You do it for them, you're out of the game. Injury is the worst thing that can happen to a player or team, unless the guy doesn't belong in the majors anyway. It wouldn't be hard to force guys not to do it. Fines. Money talks, even at the big league level.

Grant...
I can't believe I'm the first person to mention this, but aren't we currently in the third millenium Anno Domini? So maybe the Nostrodamus prophecy is a repeating one? Or are we in the second millenium after the invention of cricket? I NEED CLARIFICATION!!!!!!!

Anybody notice...
How Miller was trying to point out that Snow's pickoff was a bit questionable, and how Morgan wouldn't admit it?

he said nothing
b/c someone didnt obviously point it out to him

by rod beck on Jun 5, 2005 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly, Morgan said nothing
Jon Miller pointed out that Mientkiewicz' glove was under his leg at one point, and it was questionable as to whether the tag was applied. He said it a couple of different ways, and each time Morgan went back to Snow's error in not getting back.

I understand Snow's gaffe is what led to the opportunity of him getting picked off, but if it's not an out, it's not an out.

Ah, doesn't matter.

I wish the MLB had the Slaughter Rule
Barring that, the Giants are much better off forfeiting this game, taking cab over to LaGuardia, and getting the fuck out of New York right now. I don't need to see Al Levine and Scott Munter pitching mop-up for three innings.

Changing the subject
What's worse: the fact that I've ever watched the show, Charmed, or the fact that I can't enjoy it now that I know Alyssa Milano's a Dodger fan?

by Scott @ McCovey Chronicles on Jun 5, 2005 7:16 PM PDT reply actions

That'd be the former...
Alyssa Milano has been filmed naked and kissing another girl, thus anything less than that (like watching her fully clothes and NOT kissing girls in Charmed) should be summarily dismissed as inadequate.
