Brower released, Foppert up

Move made after Sunday's game, according to the AP story. Quite an overdue move performance wise, though with Brower's past versatility and usefulness, it's understandable why the move took so long. Real curious to see how Foppert does and in what role.

More to come
I'd wager than Linden will be up before Tuesday as well.

For Sure
I figure that Alfonzo is hitting the disabled list.  I think that Grissom was going to get DFAed up until the instant of Alfonzo's injury.

Other possibilities
Are Devore, Shabala, and Torcato. If what they have been saying about Linden needing to play every day, I bet it is one of those guys. Shabala is my guess.

AL Swing
The DH gives Linden a chance to play every day this week, which is a start. Plus Fonzie's injury moves Feliz to 3B, so Linden and Niekro could conceivably play every game.

I would call up Linden
But I wouldn't be suprised if the giants didn't, was more my point.

Amen to that
Maybe Fonzie springing a leak will be a fortuitous turn.

One of my favorite baseball quotes of all time
(and one Sabean has thoroughly ignored for years) ...

"if you're gonna stand in the corner, you better lean on the pole" from the wit and wisdom of Reggie Jackson

how sad
I know Brower's sucked this year, but it's still a shame given how critical he was in the second half last year.

More importantly, while I know the Giants probably aren't done making changes, they now have four lefties in the bullpen (Taschner, Fassero, Christiansen, Eyre) and only three righties by my count (Hawkins, Munter, Walker). What kind of bullpen is that?

lefty/righty matchups...
concern me far less than effeciveness does.

but why not release Christiansen instead?
Sure, C's ERA is more than 2 runs lower, but he hasn't exactly been lights out, either. Plus he's older and less versatile than Brower, and there was a higher chance (I opine) that Brower could rediscover his effectiveness given his track record over the past two years.

I'm not real high on R/L matchups, either -- Felipe 's use of the relief corps exhausts me -- but a 4-lefty bullpen seemed particularly/conspicuously, excessive. Contract status have something to do with it?

by non sequitur on Jun 13, 2005 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Contracts
They are both paid just over $1 million this year.  I believe Brower has one more year of arbitration eligibility.  Christiansen has a $1.5M club option with a 50K-150K buyout.

The contracts are similar enough that I don't think the deciscion was based on that.  It's probably just that Brower is struggling this year.

I believe this makes Torrealba our only arbitration eligible player.

Who's Next?
Sabean spoke of "more changes" coming. This could either mean:

"We're finally going to put Marquis Grissom out of every fan's misery."

or

"We're going to play our home games at the 'Stick the rest of the summer to try and shake things up."

or

"Your prayers are answered -- Crazy Crab is coming back!"

or...
we went back in time and signed Vlad Guerrero
