My predictions
Some slow sumbitch gets a triple.

Some hack sees Huey Lewis singing the National Anthem, and breaks a foot trying to get to his computer and write a joke revolving around "I Want a New Drug".

Give me six innings for Lowe, with 11 hits allowed.

Mike Matheny will go 4-4, and I'll complain about the  way he wears his socks.

by Grant Brisbee on Apr 5, 2005 9:47 AM PDT up reply actions

According to...
Lewis (as quoted by VH1) he wrote "I want a new drug" in 5 minutes.

...he also gets a royalties cut from Ray Parker, Jr's "Ghostbusters" due to it's striking similarity to Drug

Wow!
Not bad!  Not bad at all.  Especially on Schmidt and Matheny.

Reality:

Schmidt's line 7 IP 9K's 2 walks 4 hits allowed 2 ER

Final score: Giants 4 dodgers 2

Mike Matheny 0-4 1k

Day Off
I couldn't get the whole day off, because this "coal ain't gonna mine it's self", but I have alreay informed my boss that I will be leaving early due to my "sore" "throat".  I screamed into a shop rag to get a nice gravelly tone going.  (Not really).  And I think my "health" is gonna hit the wall at about 1: pm, then I will go home and get some "sleep", and srink some "orange juice".

3-2 Giants
Schmitty gets 6 2/3 giving up 2 runs, one of which Eyre inherited and allowed to score. Giants only get one off Lowe in 6, but get a two run double from Grissom off whichever douche the Dodgers throw out there in the 7th.

by hammystyle on Apr 5, 2005 11:20 AM PDT reply actions

14-1
Schmidt goes 7, Brower the 8th, and Benitez gives up one in the ninth. The run comes after he drills J.D. Drew in the wrist, causing him to miss 2 months. Kent then triples in the alley, but the next hitter is struck out to end the game.

Hero of the Day: Afonzo with 4 hits and 6 RBI's. All singles.

I can hope right?

I'm at the park
This is so cool, so why do I feel like such a dork?

The Dodgers were ripping the ball all over the park during batting practice.  I have a bad feeling about this.

(whisper whisper)

What do you mean they're supposed to hit the ball hard during batting practice?

He's well on his way to Cooperstown.  Most homers of any second baseman, MVP award, RBIs by the billion.  I think he's borderline if he retired now, and a good bet if he keeps this up another 2-3 years.

by kenshin1 on Apr 5, 2005 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions

95+
Schmidt is pretty capable of getting over 95 on the gun.  But it's early in the season, and he's the kind of pitcher who works up to those top speeds.

by Skaldheim on Apr 5, 2005 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

95-97
...is where he normally is by the end of a game. But he usually has to warm up to that, starting at 91-93. But today he stayed under 95, then dipped back down before they took him out.

I agree
I too am worried about him. But DIPS does not have all the answers. Look at Atlanta - they just acquired a closer who can't strike guys out, and no-one thinks Leo Mazzone doesn't know what he's doing. If Rueter gets shellacked, it won't be because his dERA caught up to him or something like that.

Umm Larson
Damnit man, where are your priorities ? History 101 can be taught better by examining the Giants- you can talk to players who were alive in Louis the XIV's reigh!

Nice
If not for a misspelling.

by tomzilla on Apr 5, 2005 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

On that note...
Our defense has performed pretty damn well, given its advanced age. Especially when compared to our counterparts.

A
nice appearance for Eyre

Okay, I did. But still.

Wasn't
Grant supposed to provide us with insider info from the ballpark ? :>)

by kenshin1 on Apr 5, 2005 3:44 PM PDT reply actions

Well..
I bet he's very afraid to bust out the laptop during the game. Would be seen as sacrilege. Let's buy him a Palm or Blackberry or something.

by tomzilla on Apr 5, 2005 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

MORE DODGER DEFENSE!!!
This is turning into a classic, classic Giants-Dodgers matchup.

By the way, if this is the newer thinner Alfonzo, I'll take two.

by Skaldheim on Apr 5, 2005 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

The laptop at the ballpark idea...
...was dumped fairly quick. If I'm in Club level seats, that's one thing, but the bleachers are just too packed.  I worried about the computer the whole time, seeing as it is about the nicest thing I've ever owned. Will Clark Starting Lineup figurine excepted, of course.

Kent at first?! Nice call, Tracy. Score one for the good guys.

Should Grissom bunt?
Against a tough righty, it might not be the wrong play.

Bleh.
Wasted at-bat.

But then again, A.J. would've found a way to double Grip up.

by tomzilla on Apr 5, 2005 3:50 PM PDT reply actions

Can Anyone Explain To Me...
Why the hell Matheny wasn't bunting there?

possibilities
  1. He refused to read Alou's signs
  2. Alou fell asleep
  3. He doesn't know how
  4. He cannot be relied upon to actually bring the bat into contact with the ball and produce predictable results

You know it. But Joe Nathan and Liriano would look really good right now- as would Torrealba.

HEY!
Shhh...if Sabean hears you, he'll trade for Ponson again.

And if Grant hears you, he'll snap that you didn't mention the Boof.

Ellison?
Isn't it time for our righty defensive replacement outfielder?

by antinous on Apr 5, 2005 3:53 PM PDT reply actions

How does Lowe sink?
Anyone know how Lowe gets his sink? Is it some kind of 2-seamer, or curveball? I caught his last inning as I came in, and am now unsure whether "sink" even means down-swerve.

Oh, hi all, I'm a lurker from Boof days, fairly  new poster though.

Someone mentioned Mazzone a while back - Smoltz apparently gave up 7 in less than 2 innings...

by scarface on Apr 5, 2005 3:53 PM PDT reply actions

I do not really...
know the physics of pitching; however, I believe he throws a two seamer

by kenshin1 on Apr 5, 2005 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Smoltz...
I got to see that. Gave up a 2-out grand slam in the first. A walk, an infield hit that Furcal couldn't handle, and then a base hit and a home run.

by squirrel on Apr 5, 2005 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Welcome, we're all new
Lowe's sink is pretty hard. Not terribly biting today, from what I could catch on the nearby TV.

It looks like the Marlins destroyed Smoltzie...I'm way more worried about Florida than Atlanta anyways.

Benitez Time
I, for one, welcome our new non-sucky closer overlord.

by Skaldheim on Apr 5, 2005 3:56 PM PDT reply actions

Lowe & Ellison
Lowe's sinker is a two-seamer.

I probably would've hit Ellison for Tucker, but it's a tough call.

GIANTS WIN
What the hell is this?  Great relief pitching?  Great defense?  A third baseman who can hit really well?

Who are the hell are these guys, and what did they do with the 2004 Giants?

This will work out...
As long as Schmidt pitches every game. And considering the advances in modern medicince...

I am really scared of Tomko and Rueter. I can only hope they wont be anywhere near as bad as I expect. The next few days should be interesting.

by squirrel on Apr 5, 2005 4:11 PM PDT reply actions

Pitching & Defense
Just as advertised.

Schmidt 1-0, Benitez a save, Eyre a nice hold. And a 9th inning is brought to you by Rawling's Gold Glove.
