My problem with this offseason

This offseason has been playing out much different than anyone expected.  There is an active trade market and unexpected names are being moved to unexpected teams.  Yet our mullethead General Manager is operating as if nothing has changed.  He's still pursuing low risk-low reward strategies and not taking any chances.

  1.  Apparently, all it took to get Sean Casey at 5 mill next year is a mediocre arm.  Sabes wants nothing to do with it.
  2.  Apparently, all it took to get Mark Redman is another mediocre arm.  Sabes wants nothing to do with it.
  3.  Apparently, middle relievers are worth 4-5 million per year now.  Of course, Sabes has a reliever signed to a one year, 5 mill contract and he trades him for a lefty specialist that no one wants.
Get off the bench Brian!  You can't score from the dugout!

Re: My problem with this offseason
I agree with your low-risk, low-reward assessment, but I disagree with your touting of Sean Casey and Mark Redman as players the Giants should try to get. Signing Mark Sweeney to less than $1 M a year is infinitely better than Sean Casey for 5x that. (Actually, Casey's earning $8.5 M in '06.)

Re: My problem with this offseason
Exactly, Casey is expensive and doesn't fit the mold the Giants seem to be searching for at "Power at 1B". As for Mark Redman, you couldn't give him to me for free. His post All Star break was pretty ugly even though he only pitched 60 some innings.

Money's included
The Reds are sending 3 million to the Pirates.

And I would rather have Casey than Sweeney.  Casey has been very good in the past while Sweeney has always been a tweener.  Casey seems like exactly the type of guy that can come here and succeed.  And again, I don't care about the money.  I know I should, but this diary was really meant as a way for me to bitch about what the Giants aren't doing.  One of the things that they aren't doing is spending money to win while we still have a shot.

As for Redman, how is he any better or worse than Morris or Loaiza or Byrd?  I would rather have Redman for one year and then see how next season's FA market shakes out than overpay for a declining Morris.

I blame Tomko.

Re: Money's included
I agree.
Casey would have been a better bet.

Re: My problem with this offseason
Every year it is wishful thinking. This year, I wished for Lyle Overbay.  That trade has been discussed for over a year.

Re: My problem with this offseason
Come on, guys -- Sweeney is virtually the same player as Casey or Overbay. They're all lefties with no speed, good on-base averages, and not as much power as you'd like from a first baseman. In this case, Sabean has done exactly what a GM on a limited budget is supposed to do: identify players who will give you virtually the same production as a star but at a deep discount.

Re: My problem with this offseason
In theory sure: but sweeney is older, and has yet to have a full season with the # of at-bats as the other guys.
I agree that he is a good bargain.  In fact, I like that Sabes picked up a "professional" hitter (hate that term though), but I hope he is not done.
The lineup as it stands needs some work.  Ideally, Sween is limited to 200-300 ABs this year as a back-up outfielder, pinch hitter, and lefty 1b.

Re: My problem with this offseason
Amen amoose.  Sweeney is like Casey and Overbay only he plays less than half the ABs of those guys.

He's got to be a horrible hack of a fielder to not ever gotten a chance to start with his hitting, not that it's that great, but it's good, certainly on par with Tucker and Tucker has played many more ABs than Sweeney in about as long a career.
