Question About Worrell Signing Bonus
Does Worrell's $500 K signing bonus count as money the Giants will spend in 2006 or in 2005? If it's '06, why the hell bother with a signing bonus at all? Just pay him a $2 M salary. Is there some weird tax consideration, either for the team or the player?

Re: Question About Worrell Signing Bonus
Could it be that he gets his signing bonus in Spring Training? I noticed that for other players, they sometimes get the signing bonus spread over a number of years. Again, lump sum soon is better than spread out later, but the money doesn't necessarily have to be paid out now.
$500K would make a nice pre-Christmas present for almost anyone - most highly paid players have gotten signing bonuses with their deals, if I recall correctly.
