Mesa defeated Grand Canyon 8-4
2. 2B Kevin Frandsen: 3 for 4, HR, HBP, SB
Other Mesa lines:
1. CF Chris Denorfia: 3 for 5
RHP Adam Miller: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
Notable Grand Canyon lines:
4. 1B Garrett Jones: 2 for 4, 3B, 2B, BB
RHP Wes Littleton: 2.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 HR
Frandsen raised his AVG from .200 to .234 yesterday. He raised his SLG from .267 to .344. It would be nice to see him draw a walk again. He has 1 BB and 3 HBP among his 64 AB. Here is a summary of Frandsen's BB/AB ratio this year:
San Jose: 26/291
Fresno: 2/ 94
SJ play: 4/ 30 (with 1 IBB)
Mesa(AFL): 1/ 64
I don't want to get too hung up on walks, but a player needs to hit for a lot of average and/or power when he walks so little to be valuable. This may depend a bit too on whether you think being HBP is a projectable skill. During the regular season, Frandsen had 32 BB and 23 HBP along with his .335 AVG, and he fell just short of a .400 OBP.
Denorfia raised his AVG to .329. Adam Miller's ERA is now 7.08. The Twins' Jones had a poor year in triple-A Rochester. The Rangers' Littleton had a hot start in the AFL, but has recently cooled off as his ERA is now 3.45.
Elsewhere in the AFL:
Braves: C Jarod Saltamacchia: 3 for 4, 2B
Dodgers: RF Matt Kemp: 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB, K, CS
In the Mexican Pacific League:
Rangers: 1B Adrian Gonzalez: 1 for 3, HR, BB, K
(None): 1B Calvin Pickering: 2 for 3, HR, K
In the Venezuelan Winter League:
Indians: CF Franklin Gutierrez: 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB, K
Saltamacchia and Kemp have had several big games recently. Are the Giants interested in Gonzalez and/or Pickering? Another good game for Gutierrez, no longer in the NL West since he was traded for Milton Bradley.
